Based on a history by Rose Phillips in 1970, we know that Joseph Todd was born in 1798 in Co Londonderry, Ireland. Joseph Todd was in 1831 Derry census in Hoggs Folly just to the west of city center of the town of Londonderry.

The census is a bit puzzling as to when the family arrived in America. It appears that Joseph left sometime after the 1831 census of Londonderry, was in PA around 1839 where Richard P (Peter R) was born, and then in Illinois by 1844 when Joseph was born.

The family history does not mention Catherine and the census does not mention Mary J/Bridget.

The Todds of Cumber Lower Parish, County Londonderry, Ireland

Around the year 1905, the young adult children of Samuel Todd 1846-1890 came with their mother Isabella born 1851 to Toronto, Ontario, Canada from Gortnaran in the Parish of Cumber Lower, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The family has grown and prospered but the origins in Ireland and the relationship to the Todds who remained in Ireland have become obscured.

First Generation

The earliest records we have of the Todds in Cumber Lower are the appearance in a tax record called the Tithe Applotments conducted in the 1827 and the 1831 census when we find

It looks to me like the Todds of Cumber Lower and the Todds of Banagher are closely related.

In the 1831 census, we have Adam and Thomas in Toneduff Lower Cumber and Thomas and Henry in Auglish of Banagher.

By the 1860s, we seem to have only John and Thomas in Tonduff.

Second Generation

Based on post-1858 wills, it appears that the Todds of Tonduff Co . Cumber Lower Parish, County Londonderry and the Todds of Castlemellan/Carrickitain, County Tyrone share a common ancestor. A William Alexander Mount Castle in Co Tyrone made bequests to both families in his 1880 will.

The family in Tonduff appears to consist of 4 siblings. They seem to be kin of some sort to the James Todd who married 1840 to Eleanor Ballantyne who lived in Castlemellon, Co Tyrone. This James would have been the right age to have been a cousin to the four siblings below.

To John McKinney of Killaoo my niece Isabella’s husband 200 p and he residue to be divided among my nephew and niceces. I appoint James Irwin of Ballyarton and George Kennedy of Kilaloo to be executors.

The Will of Thomas Todd late of Tonduff County Londonderry Farmer who died 23 March 1886 at same place was proved at Londonderry by James Irwin and Hugh M'Cullagh both of Ballyarton in said County Merchant the Executors.

I Thomas Todd Tonduff. To my sisters Sarah Jane and Isabella to the survivor of that money bequeathed me by William Alexander of Mount Castle..and all any other money to my sister Isabella Todd all my farm and chattels I appoint James Irwin and HughMcCullagh Executors.

The Will of John Todd late of Tonduff Killaloo County Londonderry Gentleman who died 23 January 1894 at same place was proved at Londonderry by Robert Todd of 106 Fountain-hill Londonderry Factory Employeer and Margaret Nimmo of Tonduff Spinster the Executors.

I John Todd of Tonduff, Killaloo, Londonderry..140 p being the balance of the amount found due to me on ___ by Wm R. H. Todd __ Londonderry.. bequeath the said sum.. equally between my son Robert Todd, my daughter Mary Jane Curry otherwise Tod and my housekeeper Margaret Nimmo. And I appoint my said Son Robert and Margaret executor of my will.

Third Generation

James Todd married Jane Craig and had the following children:

Fourth Generation

Samuel Todd 1846-1890 married Isabella Collingwood in 1874. Their daughter Sarah was born in Gortnaran, in the parish of Cumber Lower in southern Londonderry and that is where the family still lived in 1901 in Gortnaran of Bondsglen – 11 years after Samuel had died at the age 43. In 1901, though the children aged 11 to 22 (born 1879-1889) were all living together with their aunt Sarah Jane b 1866, Joseph b 1882 and their mother Isabella were not there.

Samuel’s sister Isabella b 1848 was living in Brackfield, Bondsglen. She had married John McKinney in 1873. Living with the McKinneys and their children were two boys listed as grandsons John Todd b 1896 and James Todd b 1894 though unless these were born to a daughter of Isabella, it is not clear how they could be grandsons.

Fifth Generation

Once the family got to Canada, there were a series of marriages that produced the children who are the Todds who live in Ontario today.
