Gregg Tegarden Ruble Family Summaries

Gregg Family Summary

There were three Greggs in the 1760s in the Frederick/Hampshire Co Area:

  • Robert
  • David
  • John

They seem to be related because:

1.      David Gregg was a witness on Robert’s 1765 purchase on Patterson Creek in Hampshire County and David and Robert were together involved with a suit in Frederick County in 1764-67 period.

2.      John Gregg’s land purchase in 1765 was witnessed by Robert Gregg; and Robert Gregg was involved in a suit with John Gregg in the 1767-1772 period and in the 1772-1781 period.  The latter suit was simply a “discontinuance”; so this provides no clues as to where John lived at the time.

            David Gregg

Of David Gregg, we know nothing more.

            Robert Gregg

Robert Gregg bought appears as a witness in the Patterson Creek area in Hampshire County as early as 1758 and bought land there in 1765.  In 1766, he obtained a land grant in Frederick County just south of Winchester.  He mortgaged the Winchester land in 1766 and it was foreclosed upon by 1774.  By 1776, he had relocated to Washington Co, MD. In February 1783, he bought a lot in Winchester and sold it in 1788.

Robert’s daughter Mary was reportedly born 1756; his sons Nathan and Thomas were of age in 1788 and so were born prior to 1767.  Chancery court cases in Maryland might give us a more complete picture of the family.

Robert’s family:

  • Mary Gregg, born 27 Feb 1756; died Aft. 17 Mar 1823, married 1st Isaac Parsons in 1772, married 2nd Virgil McCracken between 1797 and 1806.  She stayed in Hampshire Co.  She had two children: Isaac and David Parsons.  She is mentioned in her brother, Robert's will.
  • Robert Gregg, died Bet. 14 Mar 1806 - 16 Apr 1808.  His will is recorded in Ross Co., Ohio, signed 14 Mar 1806, recorded 16 Apr 1808.  He did not mention a wife or children in his will.
  • Nathan Gregg, married Hannah Davis 25 Jun 1811 in Ross Co., Ohio. Nathan was not mentioned in his brother Robert's will.
  • Eleanor Gregg, married ___ Smith.  He died before 1807.  She has a son named Nathan Thompson Smith who was mentioned in her brother, Robert Gregg's will.  In 1807 she is living in Ross Co., Ohio.
  • Margaret Gregg, married James Walling and in 1807 was living in Ross Co., Ohio.  They had four children named in her brother, Robert Gregg's will.
    Elizabeth Gregg, married (___) Parsons.
  • Thomas Gregg, died Bef. 14 Mar 1806, leaving three children who were named in his brother, Robert Gregg's will.

            John Gregg

John Gregg appeared only briefly in Frederick County, buying land in 1765 and selling it for a profit in 1766.  He appears on court cases in suits with Robert Gregg in the 1767-1772 and 1772-1781 period.  By 1771, he was in Bedford County PA.

According to his 1791 Jefferson Co, KY will, John had a wife Ann and four children:  David, Margaret, Lidia, and Mary.  David was born in 1767 and Mary in 1772.  He was married by 1766 to Ann LNU when he sold his Frederick County land.

John Gregg’s daughter Mary married Basil Noel and went to Ohio passing through Ross Co, Ohio about the same time that Robert Gregg’s children settled there in the early 1800s.  Possibly coincidence; possibly not.

The most important research to do is the check the records of Washington and Allegany County MD and the state chancery cases for Nathan Todd, son of Robert.

There is a George Gregg in Frederick Co VA census in 1810 that we have no investigated.

Tegarden Family Summary

Abraham Tegarden went in the 1760s from Maryland with his brothers and father to SW Pennsylvania where Abraham and his father Abraham both died about the same time about 1783.

Abraham Tegarden bought land in Hampshire County in the 1760s. He was involved in a suit with Robert Gregg in Frederick County, VA in the 1762-67 period.

The Tegarden’s settled in the part of Washington Co, PA that became Greene county.  Their land was south of Ten Mile Creek.  Just north of Ten Mile Creek was the land of David Ruble in Washington County.  David had come from Frederick Co., VA where he had been raised.

The Tegarden’s and the Ruble’s were associated with each other in PA and when they came to Shelby Co Kentucky by the 1790s, they intermarried with each other and with the Todds.

Abraham Jr’s wife Elizabeth had been married to a Parker.  Elizabeth’s daughter Mary Parker married Jacob Ruble (son of David Ruble) who after Mary Parker’s death married in 1809 to Mary Todd, daughter of John Todd and Mary (Ruble) Todd.  Elizabeths’ daughter Hannah Tegarden married in 1797 to Jonathan Ruble in Shelby County, KY.  Elizabeth’s son Basil Tegarden married in 1797 to Ann Todd, daughter of John Todd and Mary Ruble in  Shelby Co.

Elizabeth married Charles Black who died in Shelby County in 1806.

Ruble Family Summary

Ulrich Ruble came to America from Holland and settled in Bucks Co PA by 1731. By 1744, he had moved to the area north of Winchester on a branch of the Opequon Creek in Frederick Co, VA.  He acquired other land and died in the county in 1761.

Ulrich’s son John surveyed land on the next valley (Back Creek) to the west in 1751, but transferred rights to the land to Isaac Thomas.  Ulrich’s son George moved over the ridge and bought land in Back Creek in what became Gainsboro in 1763.  Ulrich’s son David secured a grant further downstream on Back Creek in the 1770s.  Ulrich’s son Peter was a witness on a deed in Back Creek Valley in 1768.   Ulrich’s son Samuel was a witness on a deed in the Opequon Creek valley in 1769.

Ulrich’s family consisted of:

George 1730-1813 Fairfield Co, OH

Peter 1730-1790 Newberry Co, SC

John 1732 – 1762 (dates guestimated)

Owen 1733-1824 Pittsylvania Co, VA

Samuel 1735-1799 Jefferson Co, OH

David 1736-1808 d Washington Co, PA

Susanna 1738-   md Isaac Malin, d Washington Co, PA

Elizabeth 1740 md Morris Evans Frederick Co, VA

All these birth years are approximations.

It is conceivable that Ulrich had other daughters for which we have no record; his will did not mention his children other than George.

The third generation appears mostly to have been born in the 1760s, with the exception of George Ruble who had a daughter who married in 1768 and therefore was born around 1750.

Susanna RUBLE, born 1738; died at Washington Co.,PA md Isaac Malin

Elizabeth RUBLE, born in 1740.md Morris Evans; in Frederick Co 1793

Based on these dates including some obviously inferred dates; it appears that the only locations for unidentified female Ruble family members is: (1) daughter of Ulrich, (2) daughter of George, (3) widow and possible daughter of John.

Ruble Issues and Rubles in the Frederick County Tax Records

  1. Tax Records:  Rubles in Frederick County

In the tax records below, we find George and John Ruble almost continuously between 1782 and 1810, and then only John Ruble after 1811.  Jane Ruble, presumably Ulrich’s widow appears through 1787 and disappears between 1787 and 1790.    Jesse and John are presumably George’s sons.

The Ruble Family history published by Jack Ruble says that John Ruble served in the Revolution in Rockingham Co, VA and after 1810 moved to Ohio where he received a pension in 1833 and died in Highland County in 1839.

  1. Ruble Issues

Wilmer Kerns history of the settlement of Back Creek Valley mentions a John Ruble who died in Frederick County in 1836.

“What is the relationship between the Rubles of colonial Back Creek with the Rubles of this generation?  It is not clear, but believed to have descended from George Ruble of Ulrick.  The Gainesboro Rubles (of the current generation) descend from “Back Creek” John Ruble, whose will was probated on May 2, 1836 in Frederick Co.”

This John seems to have been born about 1760.  The structure according to Mr Kerns and supplemented by dating by census records is as follows (though I suspect that Nancy Ruble who died in 1836 was a widow of one of the sons of John, not the daughter Nancy mentioned in the will of John d 1836 :

John Ruble of Back Creek:

            Will Book 19, p 180 and 221

Nancy and that the mother of these children is a widow of one of the sons

of John d 1836.  The Abigail md 1820 doesn’t seem to be the same

generation as the younger children who married in the 1840s.

The deed records of Frederick Co post 1785 need to be checked to determine where this John had his land and when he acquired it.

The tax records (1820-1832) could also be checked to see when John Ruble, son of George, left the county and when this John d 1836 arrived in the county.

We seem to have an extra John Ruble here.   Could he have been an orphaned child of John Ruble died 1762 or is he a newcomer that arrived after 1819 or has someone confused which was the son of George:  the John Ruble d 1839 Highland Co Ohio or the  John d 1836 Frederick Co?
