Connecting the “Lost Branches”

of the Anne Arundel County Maryland Todd Family

Richard McMurtry

May 2006; revised July 2006; August 2006; Sept 2006

There are three families with Maryland origins in Kentucky and Ohio who have the same genetic signature as the family of Thomas Todd of Anne Arundel County, Maryland who have finally (Aug 2006) been connected to the parent family tree (with varying degrees of circumstantial evidence).  Below is a chart of the family as we know it today plus a detailed discussion of the data for the John Todd Mary Jarman connection.

Origins of the Anne Arundel County Todds

Thomas Todd, a shipwright, came from the London area (Wapping, Middlesex County) to Virginia around 1637 and then came to Anne Arundel County (near present day Annapolis) by 1651, where he died about 1671.  He named one of his land tracts “Cold Kirby” which has caused some historians to think he may have had his family origins near the hamlet of the same name in Yorkshire, in northern England.

His descendants spread out over Anne Arundel Co such that by the mid 1750s,  the family of Lancelot Todd and Elizabeth Rockhold was in northern Anne Arundel Co along the western and southern edges of the Patapsco River;  the family of Lancelot and Anne Burle Todd was in the Broad Neck Hundred in north eastern Anne Arundel County; the family of Lancelot (md Eleanor Ford), John, Henry, Richard and Samuel Todd were in the Magothy River area.

The three lost branches listed below came from the Lancelot and Elizabeth Rockhold Todd family; it is assumed that some branches of the Lancelot and Anna Burle family remained in that area but other branches (Stephen Todd b 1739) may have gone to Virginia; Some branches of the Magothy River Todds remained there, but Henry may also have gone to Virginia.

The “Three” Families

The three families listed below all have DNA which indicates a common ancestor with the Anne Arundel County family.  The DNA evidence is conclusive and proves that all these families below were Anne Arundel descended and NOT descended from Michael Todd of Dorchester Co or Thomas Todd of Northpoint, Baltimore Co.  Our research has built upon this fact and we have been trying to determine the parentage of these families and their connection to the Anne Arundel family:

  1. Benjamin Todd b 1749 md 1781 Baltimore to Eleanor Ford died 1823 Logan Co Kentucky.  Benjamin is assumed to be son of Nathan Todd b 1717-1721 wife Lucy), and grandson of Lancelot Todd d 1735.   He witnessed a will for John Mariott in AA co in 1776, served in a company of Baltimore militia in 1781, md in 1781, leased a lot in Baltimore 1783-1786; bought land in Anne Arundel Co,  the 1780s and 1790s, then sold out around 1804/6 and came to Bourbon Co KY, then Logan Co., KY where he died in 1823.
  2. John Todd d 1809 Bourbon Co, KY and his brother Edward Todd d 1795 Bourbon Co, KY came from Maryland to Fayette Co. in SW Pennsylvania before 1785, then moved to Bourbon County, KY about 1792.  They were in Delaware Hundred western Baltimore Co in 1768 and possibly 1773.  They are assumed to be brothers of Benjamin and sons of Nathan b 1717-1721, and grandsons of Lancelot Todd d 1735.
  3. John Todd married Mary Jarman at a Baptist church in Baltimore in 1791, then moved to Fairfield Co, OH in the early 1800s and died in nearby Franklin County  in 1823.  He  was a wheelwright.   There is some evidence that this John had a brother Samuel and a father Thomas who had land transactions with each other in the Sophias Garden area in NE Baltimore County between 1802 and 1805.   DNA shows that this John was not descended from either the Baltimore or the Dorchester County Todd families.  Evidence suggests he was son of Thomas Todd 1743-1808, and grandson of Lancelot Todd d 1735 and Rachel Warfield.

FINAL NOTES:

As I compiled this, I noticed that there are also loose ends in the family of Richard Todd d 1718 of the Anne Arundel family.  These include: Stephen Todd b 1739, Henry Todd b 1762, Thomas Todd b 1727, and Rezin Todd b 1731.  I also note there is an internet report of a Stephen Todd b 1735 in Kent Co, VA who went to Archdale Co, NC and one of his daughters went back north to Prince George Co, VA and another daughter went to Sussex Co, DE.  Also, there is a Henry Todd in Dinwiddie County.  I believe there is a Henry Todd in Dinwiddie Co, VA in 1787 or thereabouts.

At some point, the central Virginia Counties of Dinwiddie, Amelia, Prince George, New Kent, Henrico should be studied for possible Todd connections.
