The family chart below is an attempt to synthesize the existing information (including recent discoveries) on the origins and early generations of the Todd family of Somerset Co., New Jersey.  This revision changes some basic conclusions of earlier essays.    Half of what wrote in 2006 to 2010 is incorrect.  This is my attempt to correct my numerous mistakes.

Identifying the Todds of New Jersey

There were several families of Todds associated with colonial New Jersey and Pennsylvania sharing a common ancestor with the Mary Todd Lincoln group of Todds – some recent and some fairly distant.

(1)    The Mary Todd Lincoln group of Todds:  , consisting of the half-brothers Robert Todd 1697-1775 and Andrew Todd d 1791, and a likely brother (or cousin) William Todd b abt 1700 d 1760/1770 Bedford Co VA.  William appears in the Abingdon Presbyterian Church and 1st Presbyterian church records in Philadelphia County between 1723 and 1738; then appears in the New Jersey supreme court records in Hunterdon Co NJ in the 1740s, then shows up in Augusta Co Virginia in 1750 (along with his son Low Todd who was baptized in Abingdon church in 1723)..   Robert also appears in the Supreme Court records in Hunterdon Co NJ  in the 1740s, then migrates to West Chester Co by 1755 and to Philadelphia County by 1760;  Andrew appears in Chester Co by 1760.    There is also a John Todd who appears in the same Philadelphia County church records as William in the same period, and in the NJ Supreme Court records in Hunterdon Co in the 1740s and later,  but his fate and identity are not certain.   This John could be the John who arrived in 1767 in Mecklenburg Co NC and died there in 1799.

(2)   The Hunterdon Co NJ Todds:  This group includes David Todd 1731-1809 who remained in Hunterdon County and John Todd 1729-1802 who migrated to Somerset County. John Todd 1755-1820, who married Jane Todd daughter of David Todd b 1731, has the same STR DNA pattern, but his Big Y DNA test revealed him to not be a close relative.     There is a James Todd in a tax list and juror list in 1778

(3)   The Somerset County NJ Todds;  Five brothers William, Robert, Andrew, James and John appears in the Janeway Store records in 1735/1736.    I believe, without documentary support, that Willliam Todd is the William d 1760 Peapack, Somerset Co, that Andrew is the Andrew d 1781 Bedminster Twp, Somerset Co and that James is the James d 1781 Bernards Twp, Somerset Co.   If John Todd b 1739 who married Sarah Ismay is the son of William, then William would have been old enough to one of the Janeway Store entrants.  If Andrew Todd were 30 when his first child was born, then he would have been old enough to be the Janeway Store Andrew.   James Todd d 1781 has children who appear to be born in the 1750s based on births of their children; so James d 1781 may be born ca 1720s-1730 and hence too young to be the shopper at the Janeway store.   So he could be the son of James Todd of Baskingridge in the Janeway Store records though he might be the James of the Janeway store.

(4)   The Mecklenburg Co NC Todds:  John Todd d 1799 arrived in Mecklenburg Co NC by 1766.   If John was 96 when he died, then he would have been old enough to be the John Todd who married in 1724 at Abingdon Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia County.  And he could have been the John Todd who appeared in the NJ Supreme Court records in Hunterdon County in the 1740s and 1750s.  However, it is also possible that this is a later immigrant from Ireland.   The DNA pattern of the Mecklenburg Co Todds is 2 mutations different from that of the Mary Todd Lincoln Todds; so a common ancestor could be 100-200 years prior to coming to America.  And the DNA pattern matches two families from Co Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

Relationships

The Somerset County NJ Todds have a DNA pattern different from all the others and this pattern matches a family that came to County Down Northern Ireland in the early 1600s.

The Mary Todd Lincoln group of Todds and the Mecklenburg Co NC Todds share a common ancestor from 50 to 200 years prior to the 1670s.   So they are not close kin, contrary to my previous speculations.  The Mary Todd Lincoln group of Todds DNA pattern matches that of families from the south-central County Antrim townlands of Coggry and Rashee, Ballynure, Donegore. See the Irish Todd section of this website for further details.

The Mecklenburg Co Todds match a pattern of Todds in Co Londonderry.

The Hunterdon Co NJ Todds are just one STR mutation from both the Mary Todd Lincoln group of Todds and the Mecklenburg Todds, but the Big Y DNA shows that the Hunterdon Co Todds and the Mary Todd Lincoln group of Todds are very closely related but they are more distant in their relationship with the Mecklenburg Todds. Similary the Big Y DNA test revealed that the Hunterdon Co Todds and Mary Todd Lincoln group of Todds are very closely related to the Andrew Todd d 1801 Tazewell County VA and to two families that still live in County Antrim today.    The William Todd branch of the Mary Todd Lincoln group of Todds also was revealed to be very closely related to a family that lived in Quebec in the early 1800s.

.

Parentage of John Todd 1755-1820 (married Jane Todd dau of David Todd b 1731 of Hunterdon) and John Todd 1739-1823 (married Sarah Ismay)

Kenn Stryker-Rodda, a prominent New Jersey genealogist and a Todd descendant, believed that John Todd 1755-1820 was the son of William Todd d 1760 of Bedminster Township.  William’s son John is mentioned in the Andrew Johnston journals of 1760.  Stryker-Rodda’s assertion is not supported by the DNA which indicates that one of the descendants of William Todd d 1760 does not match the DNA of the descendant of John Todd 1755-1820, but rather matches the DNA of a descendant of John Todd 1739-1823 who married Sarah Ismay.Todds.  Though John Todd 1755-1820 matches the Hunterdon County Todds using STR DNA analysis; the Big Y analysis reveals that John is not close kin to the Hunterdon Co Todds.

Comments on Other NJ Todd Family Traditions

The family tradition reported by Isaac Todd, grandson of David Todd 1730-1809 of Hunterdon Co NJ that John and David Todd of Hunterdon County NJ came from Co Longford about 1749 can not be refuted or confirmed.  However, the specific statement that David b 1730 was 18 years old when he came with his brother John suggests that the date may be valid.    This would fit with this family being Irish immigrants of 1749 rather than an offshoot of the Mary Todd Lincoln family after they came to America in 1737.     Also failure of Isaac to state the relationship of John Todd 1755-1820 suggests that the relationship was unknown, despite having married Jane Todd daughter of David Todd 1730-1809. He reports that John b 1755 was from Ireland. This suggests that John was an Irish immigrant in the 1770s migration boom. The Big Y DNA revealed that John b 1755 was not close kin to John b 1728 and David b 1731.    We can not identify the James Todd who appears in a 1778 Hunterdon County tax list.     This James may be the James who bought land in Sussex Co in 1779 and sold it in 1787. However, we simply do not have enough information about this James to identify his relationship, if any, to the Hunterdon Co Todds.

Though John 1755-1820 shares the same STR DNA pattern as the Hunterdon Co Todds,

b he does not have the same Big Y DNA pattern

Hence, he is not closely related to the Hunterdon Co Todds contrary to my previous theories. He is likely an Irish immigrant

·     John 1755-1820

m Jane Todd. Though Jane was reported to be John's cousin,

      1768-1842

Big Y DNA reveals that John was not close kin to the Hunterdon Co Todds.

I am not sure where the following fit into the tree. Though as mentioned Jane may be the daughter of William d 1760. Todds

·     Elizabeth md 1768 David Wiley

·   James b 1750s, in Bethlehem tax lists 1778, Sussex Co  1779, wife Elizabeth

·   Jane md 1777 Robert Caskey

Andrew Todd b 1750s d 1801 Tazewell Co VA has the same STR DNA as the Hunterdon Co Todds.   and to John Todd 1755. But Andrew's Big Y most downstream DNA marker is that of the Hunterdon Co Todds, the Robert Todd 1697-1775 branch of the Mary Todd Lincoln Todds, but not the John Todd b 1755. Hence Andrew d 1801 could be a nephew to the Hunterdon Co Todds, but is not a brother of John Todd b 1755 as previously I theorized. I believe Andrew d 1801 is also an Irish immigrant of the 1770s though another family historian believes he was born in America.   Based on Patrick Todd appearing with Andrew in PA tax lists, we place him as a brother of Andrew.  However, it is also possible that Andrew and Patrick were Irish immigrants just prior to the Revolutionary War.

Somerset County NJ Todds;  I assume that Andrew d 1781, Wm d 1760 and James d 1781 are the same as the Andrew, William and James mentioned in the Janeway Store records of 1735/6.  However, it is possible they are children of that generation.  I assunme that Robert and John of the Janeway Store records moved away at an early date, The Robert Todd md 1770 in Dutchess County appears to be a son of William Todd d 1760. The Robert Todd of Dutchess Co has a 1770 marriage record that mentions Raritan as a place of origin – Raritan being a river flowing through Somerset Co. NJ. The Robert Todd of Dutchess Co has a unique STR marker characteristic of the William Todd d 1760 family. The Robert Toddof Louden Co VA appears to be closely related to the Somerset Co Todds based on Big Y and may be an offshoot of the Robert or John Todd that left Somerset County.

Recent research reveals that this family may have a Co Monaghan origin and possibly close cousins to the Somerset County Todds, .

Unidentified:

1. Elizabeth Todd md David Willey, Sussex Co, 1769: Elizabeth born late 1740s or early 1750s.

2. Jane Todd b 1755 d 1826 md 1777 Robert Caskey, (1747-1800), reportedly married in Hacketstown in 1777 which was Sussex Co before becoming Warren Co, buried Sussex Co.   (Though I have seen a report that Jane was buried in Lamington in Somerset Co)

3.  John Todd in Sussex Co, 1764 and 1748

4.  James Todd bought land in Hardwick Twp, Sussex Co in 1779 and sold it in 1787.  He may be father of James Todd b abt 1783, orphan of James Todd.  The elder James would have been born in 1750s.

5.  Robert Todd d 1793 Loudon Co, VA arrived there by 1770s, had a son Samuel born 1760; hence Robert born 1730s.  His DNA matches the Somerset Co  NJ Todds; so he may be a descendant of the Robert or John mentioned in the Janeway Store records.

  6.  Charles Todd b 1795 ; in Lambertville by 1840: son John C. Todd b 1816

David and John above are assumed to be David 1731-1809 and his brother John 1729-1802, living in Tewksbury Twp which adjoined Somerset Co., but James lived further west in Bethlehem Twp.  Bethlehem Twp was where John, Robert and William Todd lived in the 1740s or early 1750s (in the case of John and Robert).    This James would have to have been born prior to 1759 to have appeared in the 1780 tax list.

C  John Todd 1764:   Sussex or Hunterdon?.

Pioneer Families of NW New Jersey, p 66

8 March 1764..between Obadiah Ayers of the Town of Hardwick Sussex Co and John Todd, Robert Bearden, Ezekiel Ayers, Daniel Landon, Isaac Bell, Thomas Likens, Samuel Landon, John Likens..Committee chosen by..Presbyterian Congragation at Musconentcong near Thomas Helms Hills – provided a lot for a Presbyterian meeting house:

Landon, Bell and Ayers are all associated with Hardwick Twp in the center of the original Sussex Co,

It is not clear if this John is from Sussex Co (where Obadiah Ayrers lived) or Hunterdon (where Musconentcong church was located.)

The meeting house they are referring to was established at Hacketstown on the Sussex side of the Musconetcong River which separated Sussex from Morris and Hunterdon Co.

Notes on the above families:

The Sussex County Court Records of the May Term in "the 29th Year of His Majesty" (1756) show that Daniel Landon and Isaac Bell had been elected as Commissioners of Roads for the Township of Hardwick. In May 1757 and May 1758 D aniel's election as a Freeholder for Hardwick was noted. At the May Term, 1762, it was stated that he had been elected a Constable. On March 8, 1764, Obadiah Ayers deeded to eight Trustees, including Daniel and Samuel Landon, the tract on which the Presbyterian Church at Musconetcong (Hackettstown) had already been built. (Snell's History of Sussex and Warren Counties, p. 584).

On May 22, 1773 Daniel Landon of Hardwick and his wife Ruhamah sold to Edward Dunlop, of the same place, merchant, for £700. the 200 acre tract that he had purchased in 1770, and on the same day he purchased from Dunlop for £300. a lot at Hackettstown, in Hardwick Township, containing a little more than one acre, on the southwest side of the main road ; also 36 acres in Roxbury Township called the Vineyard, which was formerly owned by Thomas Helms, adjoining the Musconetcong River, near Mark Thompson's Mill, formerly Helms' mill.

3.         Confusion of the

Bedford County Todds

with the Somerset County, NJ Todds

In 1970, Mr. Dean Morreau Jackman completed his History of the Descendants of Andrew and John Todd.  This booklet was about the descendants of Andrew Todd of Somerset Co. NJ and focused on the descendant's of Andrew's son John Todd (1756-1829) who married Jane Caldwell, moved to Washington Co., NY about 1784, and moved to western PA about 1821.

Mr. Jackman erroneously concluded that his Andrew and Andrew's sons John and Samuel Todd were the same Andrew, John and Samuel Todd that appeared in Bedford County, PA records between 1779 and 1783.  His logic was:

"The association of the names of Andrew Todd, Samuel and John Todd and that of Captain James Anderson, all in the same community and at about the same time, leaves no room for reasonable doubt that these Todds were indeed our own family.  For the Rupp genealogy above shows that Andrew Todd had two sons:  Samuel, born 1750 and John born 1756.  While there may have been other John Todds and Samuel Todds in the Revolutionary Army, there could hardly have been a company with a Samuel Todd as its First Lieutenant and a John Todd as it Second Lieutenant, unless they were the sons of our own Andrew Todd."

Mr. Jackman came to his conclusion based simply on the similarity names and ages.  After completing his history, he was sent a letter written in 1854 that suggested that John Todd was still in Somerset Co NJ in 1782 and that descendants of Samuel Todd still lived there.  He was puzzled by this, but did not have enough data to revise his initial conclusion.

He did not have information about the Todd family of Philadelphia and Chester Co PA and he did not have the will and deed data from Somerset County, NJ.

Some members of The Todd family of Philadelphia and Chester Co came to Bedford Co. In the 1770s, there were five Todds in Bedford County: two Williams, one John, two Andrews, one Samuel - all related to each other.  Samuel Todd and one of the William Todds were brothers and sons of Robert Todd (1697-1775) of Philadelphia County; John Todd and the other William Todd were brothers and sons of Andrew Todd d 1791, brother of Robert Todd (1697-1775).  Andrew Todd had moved from Chester Co to Bedford Co . after the 1773 death of his wife to live with his son William.  The other Andrew was Andrew Todd Jr. (1758-1816), another brother of John and William.

In Mr. Jackman's 1970 Appendix to his history, he writes: "The letter was written about 1854 by Dr. Archibald Stevenson Todd of Wheeling West Virginia to his brother. Dr. James Caldwell Todd who had then been living in Carroll County Indiana for about seventeen years…It shows that for a time, including 1782 when Martin Luther Todd was born, he (John Todd) lived near Somerville., N.J…Mentioned in the letter are a James Todd, a wealthy farmer living near Somerville. NJ…a son of Samuel Todd."

The Somerset County New Jersey records show that Andrew Todd died in 1781 with sons John and Samuel.   The records also show that Samuel Todd remained in Somerset County and died there in 1816.  He had a son James.  Deeds showed that Samuel retained his half of his father's land.

Taken together, this data shows that Andrew Todd, John Todd and Samuel Todd of Somerest Co. NJ did not migrate to Bedford Co. PA.
