In the 1820s and 1830s, there were Todds (1) along the Northwestern edge  of the County in the parish of Ardstraw, (2) in central Tyrone in Drumragh, Cappagh and Longfield East (3) in south-central Tyrone in Carnteel and Clogher and in (4) Northeast Tyrone in Derryloran.

By the 1860s, there were Todds (1) still along the northwestern edge of the county, principally still in Ardstraw but also some in Donaghedy in the NW corner though this family might be related to a family of nearby Toneduff in Cumber Lower in Co Londonderry, (2) in central Tyrone principally still in Drumragh and a family in Longfield East and Cappagh, but having spilled over into Dromore and Termonmaquirk and Donacavey, (3) south-central Tyrone principally still in Carnteel and Clougher and a family in Killeshill but now a family in the townland of Fymore Todd in Errigal Trough.

It is not clear why the Ardstraw Todds are not mentioned in the 1829 listing.

A DNA sample from a descendant of the Ardstraw/Castlederg Todds matched the DNA of the family of Alexander Todd b 1806 Co Tyrone who went to Philadelphia and then Peoria, IL and with the John Todd b 1750s Co Tyrone of “Milltown Co Tyrone” who came to Ohio County, Virginia about 1800 and to Washington County Pennsylvania by 1806.  (There are four Milltowns in Co Tyrone – 3 of which are in the Ardstraw/Camus/Donaghedy Parishes in northern Tyrone.)   These families have a Group 2 DNA pattern (common to Somerset Co NJ Todds and Co Down Todds)

Kerrie Alexander hypothesizes that there were two brothers Robert Todd b abt 1775 and Alexander Todd b abt 1768 who were sons of a John Todd.

 

“I based my theory that Robert Todd bc1770 and Alexander Todd bc1768 were brothers on the fact that they were having children around the same time in the same area and they witnessed each others legal documents signifying to me, a close relationship.  Of course they could have been cousins.  The 1796 spinning wheel list for Ardstraw lists an Alexander, a Robert and a John Todd.  Taking a giant leap of faith I surmised that Robert & Alexander were the above mentioned brothers and John was their father.”

The Todds of Donaghedy were not there in the tithes but do appear in the 1829 freeholders register in Mountcastle (Steven Todd) and Carrickatane (Arthur and Samuel Todd), but by the 1860s there is only one Todd (James Todd) though he appears in Carrickatane, Castlemellan and Edenatoodry.  It is possible this is not the same individual but multiple James Todd.  The will of William Alexander 1880 appears to link the Todds of Carrickatane and Mountcastle in 1880 to the Todds of Tonduff/Toneduff, across the border in Co Londonderry.  (See elsewhere for discussion of Co Londonderry Todds.)

  1. William Todd migrated to the US and was a substitute solider in the Civil War 1861-65.   He had a daughter Mary Jane Todd, a spinster school teacher who corresponded with the cousins in Greestown until her death in the mid 1950s.  At Chrismtas they welcomed the hamper of luxuries unavailable in post-war Ireland sent by Mary Jane.
