Todds of Orange Co and Ontario County New York (TF 102)

Terri Mulliken Allen: 2001

Joseph Todd, Sr. was born circa 1743 (based on his wife's date of birth and the year of birth of their oldest child) possibly in Connecticut, and died sometime between 1808-1810 in Palmyra, New York.

(Note by Richard McMurtry:  There is a Joseph Todd who served in 1760 in the New York militia in the company of Joshua Bloomer (possibly Westchester County) who was 18 years old (born 1742) and born in England.   This could be the Joseph Todd of Orange County.  Westchester County is just to the east of Orange County across the Hudson River.)

I have found a couple in Connecticut who had a son named Joseph Todd who are a perfect fit to be the parents of the Joseph Todd mentioned above. Their names were Joseph and Sarah (Punchard) Todd. They lived in Connecticut. They were parents of two children, William Todd, born 27 Dec 1740 and Joseph Todd born 20 Aug 1743. The father, Joseph Todd, died in 1756 and Sarah (Punchard) Todd, remarried 08 Sep 1757 to Charles Sabin in New Haven, New Haven Co., CT, and had a second family. When she died, a published record (copied by someone else) said that there were no living children from her first marriage at the time of her death in 1761. If that is the case, they couldn't be the parents of "my" Joseph Todd who was still living in 1761. I have not yet seen the original records to verify this.

Joseph Todd Sr. married Catharine Knapp, daughter of Jonathan Knapp (and probably a first wife; the only wife listed for Jonathan Knapp was Elizabeth Ferris, but she couldn't have been the mother of Jonathan's two oldest daughters), circa 1764. Catharine was born circa 1745, probably in Orange County, New York and died in Palmyra, New York, 30 Apr 1828.

Joseph Todd, Sr., a yeoman or farmer, served during the Revolutionary War, first in Westchester County, NY as an ensign and then in the Orange County, NY Militia, from Warwick, as a Second Lieutenant. Joseph's oldest son, Joseph Todd, Jr. also served in the Orange County Milita, from Warwick, as a private and drew a pension. Many people confuse the two men. I believe, but have not yet proved, that Joseph Todd, Sr. was given land in Palmyra, NY for his military service. The Todd family and several allied families all picked up stakes and moved from Warwick to Palmyra in about 1806-1808.

Joseph and Catharine were parents of approximately ten children:

Joseph Todd, Jr., b. 11 Feb 1765 in Warwick, Orange Co., NY and d. 05 Aug 1848 in Bloomfield, Oakland Co., MI, age 83. Besides serving in the Revolutionary War, Joseph also served during The War of 1812 from Palmyra, and attained the rank of Major. Joseph married (1) Julia Johnson, daughter of Richard and Sarah (Poppino)Johnson, Sr. and (2) Patty (Turner) Lee, widow of Joseph Lee. Joseph and Julia were parents of eight children: Unknown, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Catharine, Joseph J., John, Samuel S. and Julia.

Elizabeth Todd, b. circa 1767, prob. in Warwick, NY and d. before 1825. Elizabeth married James Parshall circa 1788 in Little Britain, NY. James Parshall, son of Jonathan and Jemima (Knapp) Parshall, was b. 26 Sep 1762 in Long Island, NY and d. 24 Mar 1826 in Palmyra, Wayne Co., NY. Children: John B., Joseph, Rebecca and Lydia.

James Todd (very tentative; not proven). Nothing further is known about him, except he married and had at least three children.

Hannah Todd, b. 31 Aug 1771 in Warwick, NY and d. 09 Aug 1827 in Palmyra, Wayne Co., NY, age 55. She was a Baptist. Hannah m. Joseph Lee Horton, 27 Feb 1791 in Sugar Loaf, NY. Joseph Lee Horton, son of Lieutenant Israel & Sarah (Lee) Horton, was b. 27 Apr 1765 in Goshen, NY and d. 10 Jul 1831 in Marion, Wayne Co., NY, age 66. Joseph was a Rev. War veteran and was a farmer/shoemaker. Children: Samuel, Catharine, Henry, Sarah, James, Millie, Lewis, Anna, Durfee and Wilson.

Daughter Todd, nothing further known about her.

Anna Todd (very tentative), b. circa 1776, prob. in Warwick, NY and d. 30 Dec 1854 in Palmyra, NY. She married Isaac Howell circa 1801. Isaac Howell d. 1827 in Palmyra, NY. The only reason Anna is listed as a child is because Isaac Howell was named as executor of Joseph Todd, Sr.'s estate when there were Todd sons alive and living nearby. I assume him to be a son-in-law until proven otherwise. I recently found an Isaac Howell, son of Jonah and Elizabeth (Topping) Howell, born about 1748 and married to Anna Pierson. If this is the same man, than I am obviously wrong in thinking Anna was Joseph Todd's daughter. More research is needed.

Jonathan Todd, b. circa 1778, prob. in Warwick, NY and d. 14 Feb 1823 in Palmyra, Wayne Co., NY. Jonathan married Polly (?). I haven't been able to find much about this son, although I have proved him to be a son of Joseph and Catharine. Children: Alanson, Jehiel (tentative), Barbara Marie (tentative) and Margaret Ann.

Margaret Todd, b. aft. 1775, prob. in Warwick, NY. Her date of death is unknown. Margaret m. (1) Samuel Jennings, 09 Sep 1818 in Palmyra, Wayne Co., NY. They may be parents of Samuel C. Jennings, b. circa 1819. Samuel Jennings was a Palmyra merchant on Main Street, opposite the Palmyra Hotel. Samuel died 01 Sep 1821 in Palmyra. He sold land to Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, in April 1819. Samuel Jennings fought during The War of 1812 in the same troop as Joseph Todd, Jr. In "Genealogical Abstracts from Palmyra, Wayne Co., NY Newspapers, 1810-1854" it says, "Court Martial of Samuel Jennings." I have not been able to find anything further on this. Samuel Jennings was listed on Palmyra Jury Lists in 1809, 1811 and 1818. There was an estate auction 19 Jun 1822 to settle Samuel Jennings' estate. Margaret (Todd) Jennings married (2) Chade Southwick, of Cayuga County, 04 Oct 1827 in Palmyra, New York in the Zion Episcopal Church, by Reverend Mr. Clark. I haven't found any children attributed to this couple.

Samuel Todd, born circa 1779 in Warwick, NY and d. in Mar 1850 in Adrian, Lenawee Co., MI. Samuel was a Baptist, a yeoman and a carpenter. It has been said that he fought during The War of 1812, but the only Samuel Todd's records I've found thus far turned out not to be this man. Samuel married Hannah Whitney about 1799 in Warwick, NY. Hannah Whitney, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Ketcham) Whitney, was born circa 1778 in Warwick, NY and d. 09 Mar 1837 in Adrian, Lenawee Co., MI. Children: James, Sally, Ranson, Edwin, Alfred, Morris and Alanson.

Catharine Todd (tentative), b. 1787, probably in Warwick, NY and d. 06 Jun 1858 in Groveland, Oakland Co., MI. Catharine m. Peter Ingersoll circa 1810. Everything about this person fits into the Todd family except her year of birth, which obviously could have been copied wrong at some point. She is MUCH younger than her siblings. She is listed in Ingersoll records as being a daughter of Joseph Todd. She is too old to be Joseph Jr.'s daughter. I found a Peter Ingersoll living in Palmyra and he later moved to Oakland County, Michigan, near other Todds, so that part fits. More research is needed. Children: Morgan, Margaret, William M., Catharine, Melvin, Francis Montgomery and Marietta.
