Jersey in 1793. Joseph married Lydia Hopkins, a daughter of a
“Loyalist” and in 1799
moved to Canada along with his
brothers James and Simon and his mother.
The court
records of Sussex County show
that the McMurtries had numerous court actions
related to debts before the move
to Canada.
These brothers are most likely
were the sons of Robert McMurtrie Junior, son of
Robert McMurtrie who died
intestate in Sussex County in 1777.
The brothers did not stay long in
Canada. The names of Joseph and Simon
and
several children appear in the
early 1800s in the records of the “Union Village”, a
Shaker religious community near
present day Dayton Ohio. Joseph’s son
Samuel
was born in New Jersey ca 1798;
son Joseph was reportedly born in Canada ca 1808.
About 1833, several of Joseph’s
children (Samuel, John, William and Joseph) left the
Shakers and moved to Attica, Vigo
County, Indiana.

NJ. She died in 1799 in Newport Township, Luzerne Co, Pennsylvania.
Key information about the
McMurtries came from three bibles that were passed down in the Reeder
family. Isabella's birth date and death year were
recorded between 1840 and 1843 in a bible by Drucilla
Sites Reeder, the wife of James
Reeder, grandson of Isabella. This bible
was dated 1834 and the
entries were in a handwriting
that ended in 1843 - the year that Drucilla died. Therefore, it appears that,
sometime between 1840 (date of
Drucilla's marriage) and 1843 (date of Drucilla's death), Drucilla copied
the early dates from another
bible. She recorded the birth dates and death dates or death years of her
husband,her husband's siblings,
her husband's mother and father, her husband's maternal and paternal
grandparents. Isabella McMurtrie was identified as the wife
of Joseph Reeder, the father of James
Reeder (father of Drucilla's
husband).
Descendants of Joseph Reeder and his
second wife also kept family bibles and these were probably the
bibles from which Drucilla copied
her husband's ancestors dates. These
bibles were referred to by the
desc of Joseph Reeder and
Elizabeth Courtright as "the bible of Robert McMurtrie" and the
"Reeder
Bible". These gave the dates of birth of George
McMurtrie and his wife Rachel Reeder and the 1778
date of their marriage.
Isabella first husband was James
Stinson who died in 1771 with George McMurtrie as ____. She then
married Joseph Reeder. The Reeders went to Newport Township, Luzerne
County, PA shortly after
1798 (when Joseph appears on a
deed as Joseph of Hardwick Township, Sussex Co, NJ). Isabella died
there in 1799. In 1801,
Joseph married Elizabeth Courtwright.
Joseph and Isabella's son James
Reeder stayed in Sussex County
New Jersey and married Euphemia Beavers there in 1801 (just a few
months after his father's
marriage). James shortly thereafter
followed his father to Newport Township,
Luzerne Co, PA.
Isabella's assumed sister was Ann
McMurtrie who married Francis Locke.
Francis Locke was killed in
1777 and the estate was
administered by George McMurtrie. There
is a reference in NJ Arch 36:140
that John Armstrong and
ARchilbald Stinson, Jr were made guardians for Francis Locke, Jr and John
and Elizabethe Locke, children of
Francis Locke, deceased. The original of
this record needs to be
inspected to get the correct
date. But the point is that Ann
McMurtrie was probably the sister of Isabella
and it appears that her son
Archibald and her son-in-law John Armstrong were taking responsibility for
Isabella's sister's children.
Joseph Reeder and his wife
Elizabeth and their children pulled up stakes and moved to Franklin County
Ohio about 1808 and Joseph died
there in 1814. James came to Hanover
Township, Licking Co. OH
between 1816 and 1823.
James son, James was born in PA

copied some of the Reeder family
bible data into her own bible.

A tradition in the Samuel
McMurtrie family indicated that Samuel's father was a Johonus McMurtrie, who
settled in Louisville, Kentucky.
Deeded a block in that city for a court house which was never built. His
heirs had a lawsuit over it in
1871. 'Had 9 children'. This tradition may refer to the maternal side
of Samuel's family since Samuel's
wife was from KY.
We have assumed that all the
McMurtries who came to Indiana in the 1830s were children of Joseph, but
it is possible that one or more
of them could have been sons of Simon though no evidence exists that
Simon was a father.

It is highly likely that
Courtland, Susan and Robert McMurtrie are siblings to James
Stinson McMurtrie 1810-1837 who
was naturalized as a Canadian Citizen in 1834 in
Toronto and then went to
Youngstown, Niagara County New York where he died in
1837. Around the time of his
migration back to New York and his death, his siblings
migrated to Illinois. Since he
was naturalized in Canada, he was probably born in New
York as was Courtland McMurtrie.
Possibly related to this branch
was a James S. McMurtrie, on Yonge Street, grocery
and provision store, listed in
the 1837 Toronto City Directory. An 1834 census shows
him with a town lot, a frame
house under two storeis, located on the west side of
Yonge Street. Also, a Methodist
newspaper mentioned the death of "James S.
McMurtrie, for many years a
resident of Toronto, died in Youngstown, NY age 27, Sept
6, 1837."

born in Sussex Co NJ who came to
Toronto Ontario in 1799 and then to western NY when his brothers

in the first decade of the 1800s. I
think he returned to Toronto and
married there in 1835 and that
his brother was James Stinson McMurtrie who was naturalized in Toronto
and then died in NY as a young
man.

Died at Lacon, Sept. 26, of
consumption, Mr. Courtland McMurtrie, aged 64 years.
Mr. Courtland McMurtrie died at
Lacon on Tuesday, after a long illness. He had been a resident of Lacon
for many years and was generally
esteemed. He was a plasterer by avocation, and several years ago fell
from a building breaking an arm.
Some malpractice was charged in the setting of the disabled limb, and a
lawsuit was involved, which
afterwards was settled by the surgeon having charge of the case. The arm
was afterwards re-broken and
reset. It is supposed that from this accident sprang the disease that has
cut his life short. His death
bereaves a very fine family of a very upright father and husband, and the
community expressed their
sympathy yesterday afternoon by a very large attendance at the funeral and
the grave.
