1. Alexander McMurtrie, d. 1761 in Hunterdon Co, NJ
Alexander McMurtrie is known to have settled in Hunterdon County, NJ by
1747 when he extended a loan or mortgage to Robert Pickens who was to
repay the loan by 1751. When Alexander died in 1761, his executor -
Robert Cahill - went to court to collect the debt from Robert Pickens.
No records documenting that Alexander had children have been found, but
since there was a Bridgit McMurtrie b 1759 who married Abel Everitt in
1781 (with Hugh McMurtrie as witness or bondsman and hence born prior
to 1760), it seems likely that Alexander left infant children - including Bridgit
and Hugh.
It is also conceivable that the Alexander McMurtrie born abt 1750-55 who
appears in Orange County, New York (about 60 miles away) in the 1790
census was also the son of Alexander b 1761. The only evidence (other than
conjecture) for this is that a desc of Alexander b 1750-55 and a desc of
Hugh McMurtrie, the other assumed son of Alexander d 1761, have very
similar DNA. This is not conclusive proof but does support the theory of a
common ancestor for both Hugh d 1807/10 and Alexander d 1800/1810.

Hugh McMurtrie married in 1793 to Margaret Carothers according to an old
family bible. It is assumed that this marriage was in the portion of
Northumberland County, Pennsylvania that became Union County in 1813.
Hugh appears on a 1791 tax list in Buffalo Township, Northumberland Co,
PA and in 1792 he appeared on a petition along with Abel Everitt and
Christopher Johnson and others to separate West Buffalo Township from
Buffalo Township. Also on this list was a Samuel Carothers.
The assertion in the 1930s by Frederick James McMurtrie, a descendant of
Hugh McMurtrie, that Hugh was born in Sept 1770 to John McMurtrie and
Margaret Robinson of Philadelphia, PA has been shown to be incorrect.
Instead, Hugh is from Hunterdon County New Jersey and hence probably
the son of Alexander McMurtry who died there in 1761. Hugh appeared on
the marriage license of Abel Everitt and Bridgit McMurtrie in Hunterdon Co,
in 1781. Between 1786 and 1789, the Everitts and Hugh McMurtrie moved
to Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania. This suggests that Hugh is close kin
to Bridgit, most likely siblings since Bridgit was born in 1759 (based on a
family bible) and Hugh was born prior to 1755 based on 1800 census and prior
to 1760 (based on his being over 21 in 1781 when he was witness to Bridgit's
marriage license).
Frederick James McMurtrie, a descendant of Hugh, had heard a family
tradition about Hugh being the son of John McMurtrie who had served in
the Revolution. He asserted that Hugh’s father was the John McMurtrie
who was married at Christ Church in Philadelphia in 1769 and that this John
was the son of William McMurtrie, a prominent merchant of Philadelphia.
He mixed up the records of several different John McMurtries and asserted
that they all referred to the John McMurtrie of Philadelphia. He also asserted
that William was the son of Joseph McMurtrie of Dalmellington Scotland
who was the progenitor of the McMurtries who came to New Jersey in the
1730s. There are many aspects of this tradition that have been proven to be
incorrect and this theory should not be viewed as a likely possibility. For
example, the John McMurtrie who married Margaret Robinson in 1769 must
have been born prior to 1748 and so could not be the son of William who
was born in 1740. Furthermore, William was the son of a James McMurtrie
of Dalmellington, Scotland. And the Dalmellington and the New Jersey McMurtries
do not have even remotely similar male DNA - hence are not kin to each other.
One researcher who inspected the family bible record of Frederick James
McM’s family in the possession of the Burton Historical Collection in the
Detroit Public Library stated that the Sept 1770 birth date for Hugh
McMurtrie appeared to have been entered in pencil in a different handwriting
than other bible entries. This researcher questioned the validity of this date
being of the opinion that it had been added by a later generation.
DNA results indicate that the genetic pattern of one of Hugh's descendants
is only one mutation away from the pattern of a couple of the branches of the
New Jersey McMurtries and does not match the DNA of the Dalmellington
born McMurtries who came to Philadelphia in the 1750s. This does not
necessarily prove that Hugh of PA is the Hugh of NJ, but this supports the
documentary evidence.
A descendant of Hugh's reportedly sold a parcel in Limestone Township,
Union County for which no record of purchase has been found.
Investigation into the history of this parcel and adjacent parcels might give
clues as to exactly where Hugh McM lived when he came to PA.
Hugh died between 1807 (when he appears in a public record) and 1810
(when his wife Peggy/Margaret appears as the head of household in the
census.)

Daniel was a noted surgeon, and rose through many years in the US navy to
the position of medical inspector and medical director and at the time of his
retirement in 1898, he was in line for surgeon general of the US navy. His
death occurred a few months later. Interred in National Cemetery, Arlington.
