CF 115 - 116
|
CF 115 and CF 116 are the families of two of the children Thomas and Nancy Gibson McMurtry of Ireland. Thomas was
born in Antrim, but moved to Co Tipperary to run a mill there and later returned to Co Down. One of Thomas' sons Samuel
stayed in Co Carlow and has descendants in Dublin and South Africa. Three of Thomas' sons came to America - two came in
the 1850s: John Gibson McM settling in Chicago and George Gibson McM settling in Pittsburgh and a third Thomas coming to
Chicago in the 1880s.
Recent research shows that Thomas was the brother of William McMurtry (CF 202) who was also from Co Antrim and went to County Carlow in the south of Ireland to run a mill there for John Alexander. In 1821, William got a reference from his employer attesting to his skills as a miller and then William migrated to Ontario, Canada, settling in Bowmanville.
