John McMurtry (1752-1841) and James McMurtry (1769-1837)

The family of John McMurtry 1752-1841 was previously assumed to be one of the "sons of my son James" mentioned in the
1785 will of Thomas McMurtry of Bernardsville, Somerset Co NJ, principally because John married Margaret Gomer of Somerset Co NJ
in 1781.    John shows up in Orange Co NC about 1785 along with a James McMurtry who married there in 1788 to Jeane Bracken.   In 1794, 
they moved to Sumner County , Tennessee.   A letter in 1922 by Daniel McMurtry, descendant of John, stated that John had a brother 
"Jimmy" who went "over the mountain".   This is assumed to be James McMurtry b 1769 d 1837 who migrated to Humphreys County TN prior 
to 1807.
