The History of the McMurter Family of Ameliasburg

Thirty years ago, I did extensive research in the Canadian records related to the McMurter family. However, I have dispersed all my genealogical records to various historical societies and no longer have the birth, marriage, death, land and probate records from which I compiled a family tree. Luckily one person has posted the family structure on ancestry.com (lindacookie). We acknowledge and thank this source. From those records the following summary is derived. This does not do justice to the personal dimension of the history of the family and the lives of those listed here, but it does give 6 generations of the family tree.

DNA results from Harry (Harold) McMurter in 2020 matched the family of Thomas McMurtry d 1788 Somerset County New Jersey and Joseph McMurtrie d 1761 Sussex Co New Jersey. It is thought that James McMurter was a descendant of either Thomas McMurtry, son of Thomas McMurtry d 1788 or of Thomas McMurtrie 1784-1828 Canada, grandson of Joseph McMurtrie died 1761. Thomas son of Thomas disappeared from Somerset County in 1781 having absconded for debt – a common challenge to Revolutionary soldiers like Thomas McMurtry.
