THE BELL FAMILY
It is thought that Samuel Bell and his wife Mary Pagit are the progenitors of
our Bell family. The earliest record I have at this time is in Wilkinson
County, Mississippi. While they were living in Mississippi records have
been found showing the marriages of Henry H. Bell and Elizabeth
Sojourner, 9 April 1826, and Mary Bell and Bridges
Sojourner 12 March 1825, Wilkinson County Marriages, Book C, page 102.
Bridges and Elizabeth Sojourner are brother and sister, as are Henry H. &
Mary Bell.
They probably migrated from South Carolina as Mary Bell was born there in
1806. It is not known whether the Bell's and Sojourners came together from
South Carolina at this time. The known children of Samuel and Mary are
David, Mary, Sarah, Henry, John, Joel?/or Joseph, and Martha, who married a
Capt. Charles Curtis. See True letter of Robert F.
Sojourner. After they moved to Louisiana, David Bell married Emily Sofia
Nixon (See Wofford-Nixon Genealogy) on 1 August 1829 as shown in
Annotated Abstracts of the Successions of St. Mary Parish 1811-1834, page
46, Joel?/or Joseph Bell, was a witness to this marriage. Sarah Ann Bell
married Michael Knight, on 15 October 1829. John D. Bell, her brother,
witnessed the marriage. Annotated Abstracts of the Successions of St. Mary
Parish 1811-1834, page 67, see also St. Mary Parish Donation Book A,
#157
Our ancestors Bridges Sojourner and Mary Bell migrated to Franklin, St.
Mary Parish, Louisiana around the time of birth of their first child Charles
about 1826. Bridges died 1 August 1833, soon after their move.
He left his wife Mary and four young children all under the age of puberty.
She was confirmed as their natural tutrix. William Sharp was undertutor to
all four. On 22 August 1833, Daniel Pierce Sparks and John Smith were
appointed appraisers. John Lay and Nathan Berwick witnessed.
(Annotated Abstracts of the Successions of St. Mary, Louisiana 1811-1834,
#256)
In February of 1836, Mary Bell Sojourner, widow of Bridges decided to
remarry to Matthew Rogers. In Louisiana a family meeting must be calledto
gain approval for the second marriage. Present at the meeting were William
J. Nash, Richard Lynch, John Smith, John Muggah and William H.
Baskerville, all friends. Mary Bell Sojourner and Matthew Rogers were
married 2 February 1836, by John Moore, officiating officer. Witnesses
were the friends named above. (St. Mary Parish, Louisiana Marriages, Book
2, page 79) and (Annotated Abstracts of the Successions of St. Mary,
Louisiana 1811-1834, Estate # 256) Mary Bell Sojourner Rogers died in
1853. Her succession was opened in 1853, Estate #822. Another
succession in the name of Mary Bell, Estate #915 was opened in 1856.
Thesecould have been the same succession. (Records of Attakapas District,
Louisiana, Volume II, St. Mary, Estate #822 & #915).
Matthew Rogers died in 1854. (Records of Attakapas District,
Louisiana, Volume II, St. Mary, Estate #849).
The Children of Bridges Sojourner & Mary Bell were:
1. Charles Bridges Sojourner, b. about 1826 in Mississippi, probably
inWilkinson County, m. Martha L. Campbell in Franklin, St. Mary Parish,
Louisiana (True letter from Robert F. Sojourner)
2. Caroline Amanda Sojourner, b. about 1828 (St. Mary Parish, Louisiana
Federal Census), m. William Rochel, Jr., probably about 1856. She died in
1857, probably during the yellow fever epidemic. (Records of Attakapas
District, Louisiana, Volume II, St. Mary, 1811-1860, Estate #970).
*3. Robert Norwood Sojourner, b. about 1830 (St. Mary Parish, Louisiana
Federal Census) m. Mary Victoria McMurtry about 1856 in Franklin, St.
Mary Parish, Louisiana.
4. Lenore Jane Sojourner, b. about 1832
Robert Norwood Sojourner, (our ancestor) married Mary Victoria McMurtry
in about 1856. She became pregnant with their only child, who was born one
month after her father Robert died of yellow fever in the epidemic that was
raging in southern Louisiana at that time. The succession of Robert
Norwood Sojourner was opened in 1858, a few days after his death on 11
August 1858 in Patterson, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. (Selected Annotated
Abstracts of the Successions of St. Mary Parish, Estate # 983)
(NOTE: Selected Annotated Abstracts shows Robert's succession opened in
1857, but birth of their daughter is September 1858, so there is an error
either in her birth year or his death year.) Mary Victoria McMurtry, widow
of Robert Norwood Sojourner and our great great grandmother was born
November 28, 1838 in Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana and died January
1, 1929 in Kerrville, Kerr County, Texas. She is buried in the Hardin Chapel
Cemetery in Liberty County, Texas. Their only daughter, Roberta Norwood
Sojourner was born 26
September 1858 in Patterson, St. Mary Parish, one month after her
fathersdeath. Our mother (Martha Roberta Barrett) was named after her. After
the death of her husband Robert, Mary Victoria married Dr.J.M. Cade.
They had no children. Mary Victoria was called Nane' by ouraunt Ninon
Barrett and our mother Martha Roberta "Bobs" Barrett. MaryVictoria came
from Louisiana to Liberty, Texas after the death of Robert and her marriage
to Dr. Cade and lived in Hardin, Liberty County, Texas. She probably came
through Galveston with the Woodworth family. See Woodworth genealogy
in McMurtry family story. Dr. Cade also died after they came to Texas and
she was left a widow again. She died in Kerrville on January 1, 1929.

Miss Alice Sojourner
Natchez, Miss.
Dear Miss Sojourner:
In reply to your very kind letter, which was much appreciated, and was of
interest in finding that I had at last located someone of my own name, and
possibly a relative. I know very little about my forefathers for the reason that
our family tree and history of the Sojourners was burnt up with my library,
given me by my grandfather James Campbell - my
Mother's family--. I had an aunt by name Martha Belle Curtis - at least she
was my father's aunt, who was the wife of Capt. Charles Curtis. (she was a
sister of my Father's Mother) who moved to Galveston in the 50's (1800's).
He (Curtis) and his son were drowned in the Galveston flood of 1850 or
thereabouts, being Captains of Vessels.
My Father's name was Charles Bridges Sojourner and was born
somewhere in Miss. He went to Texas in 1848, spent a year or so looking
over the frontier state at that time, and came back to Franklin, Louisiana
where he married my mother Martha L. Campbell, daughter of Col. James C.
Campbell whose father was an English Colonel in the Army of 1812. My
Grandfather died (Father's father) quite young and his mother married Dr.
James B. Rogers, who was a big planter near Franklin where they moved
from Mississippi. My Father had one brother and two sisters. Robert F.
who married a Miss McMurtrie a Scotch family who lived at Liberty, Texas.
He died of yellow fever in
1859. After his death a daughter was born who was named after Roberta F.,
she married William Barrett who recently died, leaving 10 or 12 children.
They live at Walters, Liberty county, Tex. My Aunt Vic. McMurtrie
Sojourner could probably give you a further history of the Sojourner family
if you care to write to her. I have a very slight recollection of the history of
the family, and the family tree gotten up by Aunt Curtis. I remember she had
the family traced back to three brothers who were driven out of France - they
being Huguenots - and landed here perhaps before the Mayflower. They
moved to S. Carolina, one of the brothers marrying and
going west and the other south, which branch is my father's family. The
name was changed in this country from La Journier to Sojourner. This
change was made in S. Carolina the one who went west carried the original
name much longer than the southern branch. My Father's two sisters
married in La. but we have no trace of them since the Civil War.
I would suggest you write to Aunt Vic who probably can give you more
definite data, that I think would be very interesting. I will try and get some
more facts relating to the family from a Bible in possession of my brother
James, who has two sons Thomas Lubbock, the other Charles, all living in
Houston, Tex. Bro. lost his wife when the children were small and lived on
the Brazos River Fort Bend County. 35 miles west of Houston.
Hoping to hear further from you, in effort to trace the relationship. I heard
my Father mention meeting some Sojourners in Shreveport, La. along in the
eighties, when buying cotton there. Once I heard of a couple of Sojourners
in the commission business in Galveston.
Where I was born in 1851. Col. Sojourner who was a representative from
South Carolina, I tried to meet several
times in Washington but did not succeed.
Very Truly yours
Robert Forqhard Sojourner
