Dorchester Co., MD as of 14 Mar. 1780 when both were on a commission to determine the "bounds of George Slacom's land called Rattlesnake Island and return." Lib. 28 fol. 322-324, recorded 15 July 1780.

The 1776 Census of Dorchester County, Maryland (in The 1776 Census of Maryland by Betty S. Carothers, pg. 44), lists both Benjamin & John Todd in Straight's Hundred.

John Todd, 2 males 0-10, 1 male 30-40, 2 females 0-10, 1 female 16-21.

Benjamin Todd, 2 males 0-10, 1 male 10-16, 2 males 16-21, 2 males 21-30, 1 male 30-40, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 16-21, 1 female 40-50, 1 female 50-60

The above shows a John Todd who is probably the one who served in the Revolution and who died prior to 1803 leaving sons Benjamin and John who are mentioned in the deed records.

The above shows a Benjamin Todd with a family of 9 males, some of whom may be sons and others may be brothers or other family members.

1.d. Discussion of John and Benjamin entries

Hi Todd Researchers interested in Lorraine's John and Don's Benjamin.

I finally have the photocopies of the Benjamin Todd entries in the abstracts of Dorcehster Co Deeds. 

1.  They show that John Todd of Dorchester Co is NOT Lorraine's John.

2.  They do not pin down whether Benjamin Todd of Dorchester could be Don's Benjamin or not.

3.  So, the search for Lorraine's John's origins should shift to Anne Arundel and Baltimore Co. (as well as Bourbon Co KY and Fayette Co PA).  Don has ordered a Baltimore probate film and the deed indexes to Anne Arundel.  I do not remember if he offered to order the Anne Arundel Co wills. 

Those of you interested in Don's Benjamin and Lorraine's John should check in with Don about this and then decide who is going to order it.

4.  July 30, 1803: (Dorchester Co. MD Deed Book HD 20, p 572):  Joseph Todd sells "lands willed to said Joseph Todd by his father John Todd, being part of "Addition to Todds Adventure", part of "Todds Range", part of "Todds Venture" and part of "Todds Expence". containing 136 acres.  ..Acknowledged by Joseph Todd and by Priscilla Todd, widow of John."

This shows that John Todd died prior to 1803 and therefore could not have been the John who was in Bourbon Co. KY in 1809.

The deed abstracts also show that there were three Benjamin Todds in Dorchester Co in the late 1700s:

Benjamin Todd, (son of Job Todd and grandson of Benjamin Todd d 1770)

Benjamin Todd (son of John Todd and grandson of Benjamin Todd d 1770)

5.  July 30 1803: (Dorchester Co. MD Deed Book HD 20, p 603) Benjamin Todd, son of John Todd sells to Joseph Todd son of John Todd, a parcel called "Todds Expence".  Nancy is acknowledged as wife of Benjamin.

This Benjamin is most likely the Benjamin Todd who married Nancy Travers in Dorchester Co in 1798. 

6.  Oct 18, 1803 (Dorchester Co. MD Deed book HD 20, p 584): Benjamin Todd, son of Job (Todd), sells: "Outlett" on west side of Fishing Bay, near Gose Creek.

This is undoubtedly the Benjamin Todd who married Mary Andrews in 1789. 

So the records show that all the Benjamin Todd entries after 1788 are for these two Benjamins, grandsons of Benjamin d 1770, i.e. Benjamin son of Job and Benjamin son of John, not Benjamin son of Benjamin d 1770. 

It is still uncertain if Benjamin Todd son of Benjamin died in Dorchester of left the area.  However, it would probably be better to search in Baltimore and Anne Arundel County before digging deeper into Dorchester.

Located at 1900 North Point Road , in Baltimore County , Maryland.Take beltway e to exit 43 to route 20 follow for approximately 2 miles to Todd's Farm. Permisson was given by current owner to transcribe what tombstones were readable

. There are three stones which are worn completely smooth they are said to be

stones of slaves that lived on the property . But I could find nothing in the

history of the house to confirm this. The estate of Todd's Inheritance sits on 43 acres of land which has recently been purchased along with the house by the state of Maryland . It is said that the state will make this in to a learning center of some sort .The original house was built in 1664 but was burned to the ground by the British in 1812 , in the Battle of North Point . The third floor window was used as a lookout for the British as they attacked Baltimore Harbor.

The history of the house can be better researched at the Maryland Historical

Society , 201 Monument Street in Baltimore City. Even though the estate was

originally built by Thomas Todd and the cemetery is supposed to be the resting place of his family and many generations after , I could not find any evidence of Thomas Todd being buried there.

The following stone is 98% unreadable . The stone measures about 4 feet across and is about 5 feet long . It lays flat like a slab . At the top of the stone is a skull and crossbones engraved, below that there seems to be a verse and then the name Elizabeth Connelly . It is said to be the grave of a sea captain but I have not been able to prove this .
