Ruble Family Information

(searching for ancestors of Mary Ruble md John Todd ca 1773)

Ruble Miscellaneous Dec 10 , 2003

  1. John Rubbel of Lancaster Co, PA His wife Christiana has eloped, deserting him and 5 young children:  29 Nov 1733, Abstracts from Benjamin Franklin’s Gazette.
  2. John Rubel, 150 acres in Lancaster Co, Apr 27, 1734 (PA Archives, Series 3, vol 24, p 506)
  3. John Rubble, Jr, 150 acres, 8 Dec 1743 (Pa Archives, Series 3, Vol 24, p 508)
  4. John Ruble bought 220 acres of land in Cocalico Township, Lancaster Co on 1 Apr 1747 from Christopher Weitman, Book B, p 424
  5. John Ruble of Bethlehem, Bucks Co., bought land in Cocalico Twp, Lancaster Co from Christopher and Susanna Shope on 1 Apr 1749, Book A, p 42.

(note:    Cocalico Twp is on the Lancaster-Berks Co border and was split between the two counties when Berks was created in 1752.  The above references are undoubtedly to the same John Ruble as reported in Lancaster and Berks Co records.  It indicates a possible geographical link with the Ulrich Ruble family of Bucks Co.)

  1. John Ruble, Warrant 3 May 1748 for land in Brecknock Township, County of Lancaster, now Berks, containing 93 acres and allowance of 6 acres per cent for Roads, etc…and by Deed 25 Aug 1759 sold to Jacob Shirts. (PA Archives, Provincial Commissions, Series 3, Vol IX, page 499)

NOTE:  Berks County was established in 1752 from part of Philadelphia County (land east of the Schuylkill River) and from part of Lancaster County (land west of the Schuylkill River - except for the township of Caernarvon and possibly the lower parts of Brecknock, Robeson and Union Townships which were in Chester County.  This suggest that the Ruble land was near the Lancaster-Chester County border.

  1. Jacob Rubely, living in Conestogeo Twp, Lancaster Co, PA on 24 Oct 1754, Abstracts from Benjamin Franklin’s Gazaette.
  2. Jacob Rubel 1725-1813 md Catharine Holder (1733-1815).  Jacob was born in Diersdort in Palatinate;  Celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1807.  had no children. (Old Moravian Cemetery of Bethlehem, v 2) (Note this source says Jacob came with his wife to Bethlehem in 1746, but he was married in Bethlehem in 1757.
  3. Marriages in Moravian Church, Bethlehem, PA
    1. 20 Arp 1757:  Jacob Rubel to Catharina Holder
    2. 1758:  Magdalena Rubel to Marcus Kiefer
    3. 9 Nov 1761: Christina Rubel to Joachim Senseman
  4. George Rubel, singleman in Douglas Twp, Berks County, 1780 and 1784, tax lists(PA Archives, Vol 28, p349 and vol 28, p 604)

NOTE:  The above references could conceivably be to the same family i.e.

1)      a John Rubel whose wife Christina deserts him in Lancaster in 1733 with 5 children

2)      4 of the 5 children might be:  John Jr., Jacob (b 1725 md 1757), Magdaelena (md 1758), Christina (md 1761)

3)      George could be a son of John Jr.

4)      There is also a Barbara Ruble who married Conrad Acker ca 1775 and has a son in Limerick, Philadelphia (later Montgomery Co.) in 1776.  She would be the right age to be a daughter of John Jr. and sister of George.

5)      There is a Mary Ruble who marries John Todd of Chester County ca 1775 who would be the right age to be a sister of Barbara and George.  However, we don’t know if Mary married in Westmoreland Co. PA (and hence possibly a relative of David Ruble) or eastern PA. (and hence possibly related to the John Ruble family)  John Todd was in Chester County 1760-1770+, Westmoreland Co. ca 1773 and Bedford Co ca 1776-1783.

6)      There is a Jacob Ruble listed as a ranger on the frontier during the Revolution and a Jacob Ruble in Bedford County, PA in 1792.

More research in Berks County and PA land warrants and land patents and wills is needed to sort this family out.

Armstrong County

1.  Summary of Armstrong Co deed index

The grantor index for Todds is exclusively sales by William, Ann, David and Barbara Todd though the Wm and David references are to more than one Wm, more than one Ann, and more than one David and perhaps are sales by their estates after their deaths..  William and Ann are husband and wife, David is William's son, Barbara and the second William are sons of David.  There is no reference to sale by John Todd.

The only land in Armstrong Co that Andrew Porter recorded is a purchase in 1813 fromWm Bakewell Book 2, p 223.

2.      1850 Census, Freeport, Armstrong Co

William Todd aged 41 chairmaker 2000 born PA

Margaret 36

Annnie E. 16

David 14

William 12

Francis 10

(Note:  This MAY be Wm Todd, son of David and grandson of William.)

3.   Excerpts from a History of Armstrong County indicate that William Todd and David Todd were involved in land acquisition together, that David Todd died prior to 1815, that David Todd had a son William.  This would be compatible with David Todd being the son of William Todd since the 1817 will of Ann Todd, William’s widow mentioned William’s living children and some of the grandchildren including a grandson William Todd, but did not mention William and Ann’s son’s name.

P 407:  Among the earliest sales of depreciation land, s northwest of the Allegheny, within the limits of Armstrong county was one to William Todd of Unity township, Westmoreland County, esquire and David Todd, of Armstrong Township, farmer..eastern side of that part of Crooked Creek called the South Bend…having obtained patents Sept 16 1786..in the forks of the Allegheny and the Buffalo.

p. 408:  In the summer of autumn of 1796 William and David Todd laid out a town, the plan of which is recorded in Allegheny county, bordering upon the Allegheny and the buffalo..Freeport.

p 411:  James Armstrong's wife, an heir of William Todd, instituted proceedigs in parittion to (Lot) No 8, of Sept term 1817 in the common pleas of this county.  After the issuing and service of the summons to Willima Todd and the other children and heirs of David Todd, deceased, George Armstrong appeared as attorney for all the defendants….William Todd and his sisters, Barbara afterward intemarried with Jesse Martin, Elizabeth, with David Shields, and Sarah with John Thrush.

10.  Andrew Porter bought land for Joseph Cook in Armstrong Township, Westmoreland Co on 23 Oct 1801, Book 6, p 147.  This could be the land of Andrew's that the County Commissioners sold to Joseph Cook for non-payment of taxes on 26 Nov 1787, book B, p 417.  Andrew Porter also sold three other tracts to relatives in Sept and Oct 1808.  (book 8, p 284, 299, 301).

11.  16 May 1806 between Andrew Porter of the Township of Norriton in the County of Montgomery (Pennsylvania), gentleman and Elizabeth his wife of the one part and John Ewing Porter of the Borough of West Chester in the County of Chester (Pennsylvania), attorney at law of the other part..for $1..grant..three certain plantations or tracts of land one of them called Limestone situate on the East side of the Allegheny River known by a small improvement about one mile from Forman's claim in the County of Westmoreland (Pennsylvania)..beginning at a corner of William Guffs land thence by the same S 70 E 300 perches, thence by Andrew Porters land S 70W 142 perches ..thence by vacant hilly land N 70 W 300 perches and N 20 E 142 perches to beginning …containing 251(+) acres and ..tract .. called Limestone Meadow situate on the waters of Kiscomentas in ..Westmoreland.  beginning at a dogwood thence by land of John Todd S70E 300 perches to a white oak thence by Andrew Porter's land S 20 W 35 perches thence by land vacant N70 W 300 perches, thence N20 E 35 perches to the beginning ..containing 61(+) acres and ..Betsey's Delight situate on the waters of Kiscimeneta in..Westmoreland beginning at a post in a line of John Todd's Land, thence by the same and vacant land S20 W 331 perches and a half, thence by vacant hilly land S57 E 1050 perches, N 8 W 64 perches N55E 990 perches N 146 perches N49 E 102 perches thence by of Wm Todd's land N67W 167 perches to the beginning..containing 285 (+) acres being the same three plantations.. by two serial Patents bearing date the 4th Dec 1781 ..in patent Book No 1 p 117 granted and conveyed unto the said Andrew Porter

Note:  The 250 acre parcel called Limestone is the one for which John Todd got a warrant, but Andrew Porter secured the Patent and the 61 acre parcel called Limestone Meadow is the same one for which John Todd secured the warrant and patent.  According to Andrew Porter's 1781 patent, John Todd sold both these parcels to Andrew Porter.  What is curious is that both the 1781 patent and the 1806 deed refer to the adjacent land as "land of John Todd".

However, there is no 1776 John Todd sale recorded in Westmoreland Co and no sale after 1806.  Finding the document that conveyed this adjacent land might give a clue as to what became of John Todd.  This could be done by tracing the sale of the property beginning with the sale by John Ewing Porter until the deed reflects an owner other than John Todd.  Then a search for the purchase of the adjoining property by that new owner might give the needed clue.

Note that there is a deed from Wm Todd to Andrew Todd executed in 1790 but not recorded until 1821 in Indiana County, presumably for Andrew Todd's Crooked Creek land.  So delayed recording is not unreasonable transaction to be searching for.  Also, note some of  Andrew Todd's land was not sold until 1810.

5.  Archibald and Wm Todd ca 1810

I got your email addresses by researching TODD in Washington Co.. PA

William Todd 1756-1852 probably born Ireland is my ancestor.

Archibald Todd 1763-1852 is his brother

Archibald Todd came to Belmont Co., Ohio about 1818 or so and my ancestor William Todd 1756-1852 came to Harrison Co., Ohio about that same time.  Harrison and Belmont Co., Ohio are side by side.

I believe that Archibald and William Todd were in Washington Co., PA in 1790.

I checked the 1810 census of Washington Co., PA and found  2 William Todds, Archibald Todd and

a John Todd.

I found this in the 1810 census.

I believe that the William Todd, the first one mentioned on this paper is my William Todd who came to Harrison Co., Ohio about 1818

I have the following for children of my William Todd

1.  Elizabeth Todd 1795-1828 who married William Auld

2. Robert Todd 1797-1882 who married Martha Auld, my ancestors

3.  Isabel Todd who married James McMillen

4.   John Alexander Todd 1809- 1877 who married Mary Love

This family lived in Harrison and Belmont Co., Ohio

I am hunting for clues  as to who William Todd's wife was, and any other info you may have.

William did not have a wife with him when he came to Ohio.

I would appreciate any help with this family.
