Todds in the Pennsylvania Census of 1780, 1790, 1800

The tables below show (1) the John Todds in the three "census" years, and (2) the patterns of change of all Todds in all PA counties during the same period. These tables were compiled to determine likley places to look for the origins of John Todd of Shelby Co., KY who was in PA in 1780, but in KY by 1792, but the tables are useful for sorting out any of the Todd families in PA.

  1. The most likely candidate to match our migration pattern is the John Todd of Bedford. He appears in the 1779 tax list and the 1784 census for Bedford, but doesn't appear in the 1790 census. The other John Todd that is possible is John Todd of Cumberland County who appears in the 1780 tax list, but not the 1790 census. However, in 1790, there is a Naomi Todd in the census who might be John's widow, suggesting that John may have died, not migrated. This might be the John Todd who died during the Revolution in 1783.

2. For a discussion of possible origins for John Todd of Shelby Co., see companion essay on the "Todds of Pennsylvania".
