He married young, in 1762, to
Jane Martin and by 1765 he and his wife and father-in-law (and possibly
other neighbors as well) had

Second
Generation
3. William McMurtrey CF111p56-59 1768 (Samuel) was born on 25 Apr 1768. He died on
31 Jul 1839 in Castor, Madison Co, Mo.
William McMurtrey (Samuel,
Alexander) Occupation: Minister and
Farmer.
(born, 25 Apr 1768,
Virginia. Evidence found so far indicate
place of birth was probably in Augusta
County, Virginia, in area that
became Botetourt County; died,31 Jul 1839, Madison County, Missouri. He
married about 1788, Sarah McCord,
(born, 22 Nov 1773, North Carolina (1850, US Census., Madison Co.
, MO, NA mf#M432-405, p.214).
died 17 Aug 1856, Madison County, Missouri), daughter of James
McCord and Jane Scroggs or
Scruggs. William and Sarah are
buried McMurtrey Cemetery, located
South West quarter, Section 10,
Township 33, North Range 8 East, on former property of William
McMurtrey. (Headstones, personal
visit to cemetery) Probate of estate, 4
Nov 1839, Madison County,
Missouri.
The 1790 Federal census of
Abbeville, South Carolina shows William McMurtrey with 1 male under age
16, 1 male 16 upwards and 2
females. (Note: Completion of the 1790 census of South Carolina was
extended to 1 March 1792, but
actually completed 2 February 1792. This
is explained in Kay Kirkhan's
book, "Survey American
Census Schedules",
p.16.( Deseret Book Co.: Utah;
1959) The 1790 schedule would then reflect the birth of son William
Martin, December 1790, as the
male child under age 16.
William was not found on the 1800
census of Abbeville, South Carolina.
Sometime after daughter
Elizabeth was born in April of
1799, William must have moved his family north.
Land and census records
indicate he traveled to Barren
County, Kentucky and Jackson County, Tennessee.
The 1850 census for
Madison County, Missouri has
place of birth for daughter, Mary Madeline, as Tennessee, ca1801. The
1850 census for Yell County,
Arkansas has place of birth for daughter, Melissa, as Tennessee, ca 1807.
Land records of Barren County,
Kentucky, show that for the years of 1810, 1811 and 1812, William and
Sarah's place of residence was
Jackson County, Tennessee. ("Deeds of Sale" Barren Co., KY Deed Bk.
C, pgs. 301-2, 307, 320-21;
Family History Library microfilm 209720; Salt Lake City, UT. Writer has
copies.) Daughter, Sarah, married
Samuel B. Jinings, in Monroe, Overton County, Tennessee, 5
September 1814.
("Declaration of Samuel Jennings," resident Woodford Co., IL, 16 June
1855, purpose
obtaining Bounty Land for service
in War of 1812; File no. 192,599, National Archives and Records
Service, Washington, DC. Writer
has photocopy.) These dates seem to firmly place William, Sarah and
family in Tennessee from
1801-1814. Unfortunately early records
from Jackson County, Tennessee are
severely lacking. Due to courthouse fire, probate and marriage
records do not begin until 1870 and the
land records not until 1872. When, or if William, lived in Kentucky is
unknown at this time. In 1800 the
southern border of Barren County
bordered on the Tennessee line of Smith County.
In 1801 Jackson
County was formed out of Smith
and it now bordered Barren. In 1806
Overton County, was created from
lands in the eastern part of
Jackson County and from lands of the Indian Reservation, making part of it's
northern border Barren County,
Kentucky.
First land record found for
William in Missouri was 9 December 1818.
William was in Cape Girardeau
County, at the county seat at
Jackson. Here he entered into an
agreement with a John Taggart, of
Sainte Genevieve County to build
a set of Mills on the shoal of Castor River where Taggart's Mill was
standing. This was to be a Grist
Mill and a Saw Mill located in the west half of the south west quarter of
section ten, township thirty-three,
north of range eight east. This land was bought from the state of
Missouri and is
located in Madison County,
Missouri. The first purchase of land
entered in the Land Records of Madison
County, Missouri was on 13 July
1819. William eventually owned 400
acres. In 1836 he sold to son
William Martin, the forty acres
he first acquired from the State of Missouri, for $400.00. All his land
holdings were in Township 33
(Castor) and in sections three, four and ten. These are found in the
northeast corner of Madison
County that borders Bollinger County today.
The McMurtrey cemetery that
was found is located on the
original land that was bought from the State of Missouri and sold to son
William Martin. At death of William Martin, his wife
Catherine sold the land to John Hahn in 1866.
County map today shows location
of the old Hahn Mill. There are two
cemeteries located near old mill
site, Hahn and McMurtrey. Hahn
Cemetery is near county road and McMurtrey Cemetery is located
about one quarter of a mile from
county road.
The following is taken from
Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri (org. pub. 1888, repr. 1990;
Greenville, SC; Southern Historical
Press, pgs. 564-65).
Christian Church.---That class of
believers known as Disciples of Christ or Christians originated in that
great wave of religious awakening
which swept over the country at about the beginning of the present
century. At very nearly the same
time Elders B.W. Stone in Kentucky and Thomas and Alexander
Campbell
in Pennsylvania, all formerly of
the Presbyterian Church, began preaching the doctrines of what has
since been denominated the
Christian Church, but at first termed by outsiders "Campbellite" or
"Stoneite."
The original purpose of these
reformers was to heal the divisions in the religious world, and to establish a
common basis of Christian union.
This was to be accomplished by taking the expressed teachings of the
Bible as the only creed. The
interpretation of these teachings, however, it was found could not be left to
the individual, and the doctrines
of baptism by immersion and baptism for the remission of sins became
the distinctive features of this
new sect. Churches were rapidly formed, and the new teachings spread
into nearly all of the States,
but gained an especially strong foothold in Kentucky and Tennessee. The
first teacher of the new faith in
Missouri was Rev. William McMurtry, a carpenter by trade, who came
from Virginia in the year 1819,
and located in Madison County. In 1822 he organized a church in a log
schoolhouse, at what is now the
village of Libertyville. It was formed with three members, which four
years later had increased to only
nine.
The probate files, of William
McMurtrey and son William Martin McMurtrey, are held at the courthouse in
Fredericktown, Madison County,
Missouri. William McMurtrey left a will
but only son William Martin and
a granddaughter, Jane Brown of
Arkansas were named. She was to receive a horse. It was the following
instructions he left for the
division of his slaves that brought about the list of children.
"It is my will and desire
that my slaves shall remain and reside
with and at the residence of my
son William M. McMurtrey for and during
my natural life and for and
during the natural life of my wife Sarah
McMurtrey-------. At my decease
and the decease of my said wife, or as
soon thereafter as the situation
of my estate will permit, my slaves are
to be divided equally amongst my
children--------."
After Sarah's death in 1856, son
William Martin began seeking his siblings or
their heirs. The following names of the children were
listed among the papers in sons probate packet.
i. Jane McMurtrey.
ii. William Martin McMurtrey.
iii. Sarah McMurtrey.
iv. Margaret McMurtrey.
v. Alexander McMurtrey
vi. Elizabeth McMurtrey.
vii. Mary Magdaline McMurtrey.
viii. Polly McMurtrey.

From PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL
ALBUM OF WOODFORD COUNTY,
ILLINOIS; Chicago:
Chapman Bros.; 1889----William
was eighteen years old when the family moved to
Tennessee. He had learned the trade of a blacksmith of
his father, and followed
that trade in Overton County,
Tennessee, until 1827, when he emigrated to
Illinois, accompanied by his wife
and eight children. The removal was made
with
teams, starting the 7th of June,
and arriving at Twin Grove, McLean County,
several weeks later. Four other families accompanied them, and
they camped out
on the way when night overtook
them. William bought a squatter's claim
to a
tract of land in Twin Grove, and
there being no buildings on it, he at once
erected a log cabin, splitting
puncheon for the floor and making clapboards for
the roof and door. There were no settlements in McLean County
then, except in
the groves, and the land was
nearly all owned by the Government. On
the present
site of Bloomington, was one log
cabin, the only habitation far and near.
There were no flouring mills in
that section of the country at that time, the
only mill of any description
being a corn-cracker at Twin Grove, operated by
horse-power. The principal diet of the pioneers was corn
meal and wild game.
William commenced at once to
clear a part of the grove, and the following year
raised a crop of corn, planting
it the 1st of June, and it ripened and made a
good crop. He was unable to enter the land, and when it
came into the market it
was entered by other parties, and
for that reason in 1831, he vacated the place,
and came to what is now Woodford
County, and made a claim before the land was
surveyed in what is now called
Greene Township. He built a log house on
the
place, which is still
standing,(1889) and is probably the oldest building now in
the county. When the land came into the market he entered
it at the land office
at Danville. He built a shop on the place, and worked at
his trade a part of
the time, and devoted the
remainder to the task of improving a farm until his
death. he was a man of sterling principles, and
possessed excellent qualities
of head and heart, and by his
death an upright citzen and a kind neighbor, was
lost to his community, and his
family were deprived of a good husband and
father.
