The Todds of SE Missouri
Richard McMurtry
December 2020
There were several Todd families that came into SE Missouri. Most have been identified as to their
families of origin but several remain a mystery. Special thanks to Carol Todd
Filippi who did a large part of the research on sorting out these families.
St Louis County
A Joseph Todd and Aaron Todd appeared on a list of signatories to an
1810 petition from the Bellefontaine District (St Ferdinand) of St Louis
County. Also on this list in close
proximity were Benjamin Quick, Daniel Quick, Aaron Quick, and Vincent
Carrico. Vincent married Susan Quick
in Madison Co KY in 1796. Joseph Todd
married Rachel Quick in Madison County, KY in 1799. The Madison County KY Todds
came there in the 1790s from Rowan County NC where they arrived about 1770 from
Northampton County Pennsylvania. They
are descended from Joseph Todd who came from Eling, Southamptonshire, England to Philadelphia and died shortly
after arrival in 1699.
In “A History of Missouri from the
Earliest Explorations and Settlements Until Admission of the State into the
Union”, Louis Houck, 1908, it is mentioned that Joseph Todd was in the St
Ferdinand area by 1801. A map made in 1804 shows 2000 arpents of land
in the name of Jos. Tod Joseph died
about 1810/1812. In 1810, Benjamin
Quick sold to Rachel Todd (his sister) 40 arpents (32 acres) of land near
Spanish Pond (now called Spanish Lake in Bellefontaine), about 14 miles north
of the town of St Louis. The sale confirmed that Rachel was still alive in
1810. Joseph died by 1810-1812 based on a record of Benjamin Quick saying that
he managed the sale of property and effects of “his brother-in-law “Joseph
Todd” on the 7th day of March 1812”. Rachel died by 1816 based on
her brother Daniel Quick assuming guardianship of her sons Moses and Aaron in
that year. Probate records for Joseph
Todd filed in 1817 in St Louis County of Missouri Territory documented that his
heirs included: Moses Todd, Lydia Todd, Margaret Todd, Aaron Todd and Jonas
Todd.
Moses Todd b abt
1800 moved to Jefferson Co by 1820 living near his guardian. He later murdered his Uncle Benjamin Quick
during an argument and, though exonerated as self defense,
left the county and went to Washington County. There he married Rebecca Brock about
1826-1827 and had children: Joseph Todd,
b. ca 1828; Mary Todd, b. ca 1830; Jonas Todd, b. ca 1832; Malinda Todd b. ca
1834. Rebecca must have died shortly
afterward and he then married Maria Carnes in 1838. Moses died in 1860.
Margaret Todd was born about 1803. She died in 1842 in Randolph Co.,IL. Margaret married Joab Lard
about 1820. Joab was born in 1794. He died in 1861 in Randolph Co.,IL.
Jonas Todd was born about 1805. Jonas married
Milla Kelly about 1830 in St Louis County, MO.
Aaron Todd was born about 1807 in St Louis
District, Louisiana Territory. He died
in 1836/1840 in St Louis County, MO.
The Aaron Todd of the 1810
petition mentioned above is unidentified but is assumed to be close kin to
Joseph because Aaron is a common name in the Madison Co KY Todds. Another signer of that petition was John
Hendrickson who had a daughter, Elizabeth and a son Richard. It is believed
that Aaron Todd married Elizabeth Hendrickson about 1809. About that time Hendricksons, a Quick and a Todd all moved to Jefferson
County near the Little Creek. Aaron of
the 1810 petition is assumed to be the Aaron Todd who fathered 3 children with
Elizabeth Hendrickson from 1810-1814, namely Ruth b 1810, Nancy b 1811 and
Lewis b 1814. In 1814 an ad appeared in the Missouri Gazette stating that “I
hereby forwarn and caution all persons from trusting,
dealing, and having any ____ to do in any manner with my wife Elizabeth, who contrary
to her duty, without any just cause or provocation on my part, has left my bed
and board, as I am determined not to be responsible for her acts, or
accountable for any debts she may contract.
Aaron Todd,
Joachim Township, St Louis County. In
1818, Joachim Township of St Louis County became part of the newly organized
Jefferson County. Present day Joachim
Township includes the areas where Lewis Todd, Ruth Todd Williams, Nancy Todd
Williams had land at a later date. That
is the last record found about this Aaron Todd.
Elizabeth later married Peter Stroup, a neighbor on Little Creek, in 1819. In 1855, she left a record indicating her
children were Ruth Williams, Nancy Williams, Lewis Todd, Jacob Stroup, Mary
Stroup, George Stroup, Ellen Stroup Null, Catherine Stroup Cooper, William
Stroup, Clarissa Stroup.
Ruth Todd b 1810 d 1892 Jefferson
County md Thomas Williams 1805-1872; Nancy Todd b 1812 md John William; Lewis
Todd b 1814 md 1840 Mary Ann Cox. No
male descendants have been found for Lewis Todd and therefore Y-DNA can not be used to identify the family of origin of this
Aaron Todd.
Washington County
Richard W. Todd 1781-1836 died in Washington County
in 1836.
He descends from a Thomas Todd who died in 1675 enroute
to England. Thomas was born in 1619 in
Denton, Co Durham, England, settled in Gloucester Co Virginia and then moved to
Baltimore. Some of Thomas’ descendants
remained in Baltimore; others inherited the Virginia lands and remained in
Virginia. Richard’s grandfather was a
Richard Todd 1726-1766 who came from the Todd homestead lands in northern
Virginia to Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
Richard’s children all moved to Kentucky: William Todd 1750-1815 died Woodford Co KY;
Mildred 1753-1837 married Thomas Tunstall and moved to Franklin County; Thomas
1765-1826 who moved also to Franklin County and became a Supreme Court Justice;
Richard 1755-1795 who married Mary Lankford and died enroute
to Kentucky and whose widow and children went to live with Thomas Todd. Richard and Mary Lankford Todd had 4
children including Benjamin Lankford Todd 1785-1848, Thomas Todd, Midlred Todd and Richard W. Todd. Richard W. Todd was a witness on the will
of Thomas Tunstall in 1809; so this further
establishes his close relationship with Mildred Todd Tunstall.
Richard was a deputy clerk in Franklin County, KY in 1810 in the court of
his Uncle, Judge Thomas Todd. In 1811,
he encumbered a debt to the Kentucky Penitentiary and the Kentucky Penitentiary
filed a court case against him in the Ste Genevieve Missouri Territory court in
November 1812. This establishes Richard W.’s arrival in SE Missouri by late
1811. thus disputing his possible parentage of the 3
Todd children born on Little Creek in Jefferson County beginning in 1810 as
incorrectly alleged. After his death in
1836, his children (Mary Ann Todd, William A. Todd, Emily J. Todd, Matthew A.
Todd, and Eliza A. Todd secured a grant for 35 acres in Section 23 of T37N. R2E
in present day Washington County. In
1844, this land was sold and the sellers were identified as heirs of Richard W.
Todd, namely, Mary Ann Todd, William A. Todd and Susan his wife, John P. Turner
and Emily his wife formerly Emily Todd, Matthew A. Todd and Elizabeth
Todd. In 1851, his widow filed an
application for a bounty land grant stating that she was married to Richard W.
Todd in the county of Ste Genevieve on Aug 9, 1812 and that her name before marriage
was Emelia E. Atkinson. Richard served
in the War of 1812 from enlisted in July 1814, served in Capt
Robert T. Browns’ company, Colonel W.H. Russell from 3 Nov to 22 Nov 1814 and
left service in December 1814. (Missouri
Militia in the “Indian War of 1812”).
The application was originally rejected because of service being less
than a month but upon reapplication in 1855, a 160 acre
grant in Section 18 T37N R2E, (i.e. very close to the previous grant) was
awarded to Emeline E. Todd but assigned to Mason Frizzell and Matthew A. Todd.
John A. Todd married Polly Searcy in Washington
County in December 1835. The 1850
census for Osage County MO indicates John was born in Virginia in 1814. The DNA of a descendant of this John A.
Todd matches the DNA of the family of Richard W. Todd. We have been unable to determine the
relationship of John A. Todd to Richard W. Todd though DNA samples are underway
in December 2020 to shine more light on this.
Franklin County
Isaiah Todd b abt
1770 came to Franklin County by 1812 and died there in 1841. He was the son of Joseph Todd b 1748 in
Pennsylvania and his wife Anna Crose who he married
about 1770. Joseph was the son of
Thomas Todd who died in Rowan Co in 1777.
Joseph was one of the first of the Todds to
come to Madison Co Ky about 1795. This
family was descended from Joseph Todd of Eling,
England who died in Philadelphia in 1699.
Isaiah’s first wife may have been named Prudence based on an 1832 deed,
naming Prudence Todd as his wife. He is
recorded as marrying Elizabeth Prather in 1833. He had a son John A. Todd b 1809 md 1829
Elizabeth Gall and a son Fernando Cortes Todd b 1834 d 1870 md 1858 Sarah
Bell. The two sons died without male
issue though they may have had daughters.
Isaiah also reportedly had a daughter Margaret Todd b abt 1837. Isaiah
Todd’s lands were in Township 42 Range 1 West.
Cortes’ and John A’s lands were in Twp 44 N
Range 1 West.
William Todd born 1770-1780 came to Franklin Co
by 1830 and settled on Twp 40 N Range 1E. Based on the ages of his sons in the 1830
census, he is likely father of Thomas Todd b 1811 KY d 1881 md 1851 Rebecca
Greenstreet, Charles Rankin Todd b 1818 KY d 1869 md 1833 Ester Fisher,
Benjamin Franklin Todd. We have been
unable as of Dec 2020 to get DNA samples from this family; so
its origins in Kentucky are unknown.
