The Todd Family of Somerset County New Jersey and Dutchess/Oneida County New York
Robert Todd was born about 1740, probably in Somerset County New Jersey and married Elizabeth Ver Valin on 5 JUL 1770 in in a Dutch Reformed Church in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York. The 1770 marriage record of Robert Todd indicates he was born in “Raritan” and his wife Elizabeth Verve?land was born in Rombout Twp, Raritan is the river that flows through Somerset County NJ> Robert appeared on the tax lists in Dutchess County in the 1770s. He died there in 1824.
There is a John Todd who appeared on the tax list in the 1760s. One theory is that this is the John Todd 1739-1823 who married Sarah Ismay and lived in Somerset County, NJ. Sarah was thought to have lived in Dutchess County; so this theory is consistent with John and Robert going to Dutchess Co, John and Robert both marrying there, but John returning to Somerset and Robert remaining in D utchess Co.
Both Robert and John had descendants whose male STR DNA has a unqiue marker common to the descendants of William Todd 1755-1845 and George Todd 1753-1830 sons of William Todd d 1760 Somerset County New Jersey.
Robert Todd’s 1770 marriage record
The Somerset County Todds Big Y DNA match the DNA of a Todd family that settled in Aghaderg Co Down Ireland in the 1600s which is probably the homeland of these Todds before coming to America. Their STR DNA also and matches a Todd family of Fenwick , Ayrshire Scotland. See Group 2 Todd Big Y Analysis Report for more details.
Here is the descendancy chart for this family. Note that a researcher of the family of David Pulaski Todd 1827-1897 has located an 1897 death record that indicates his father was Robert Todd, assumed to be R. Pualski Todd b 1799.

Frankly Mr. Mc Murtry, I have never done intensive research into John R. Todd's issue, but relied on the Bible record, as I found it, and let it go at that. I have, as I said, the son Walter Scott, in my notes, but not finding him in my account of the John R. Todd Bible, I didn't include him in my tree.

Note: All of the above births were copies from the original Bible Records written by the hand of John R. Todd, and now in the possession of Mrs. Eleanor Gridley of Chicago, Illinois, She says:- "My grandfather, John R. Todd, was a man of affairs and property, unusually well read, a good education for those days and country. He was a prominent politician, fine orator, popular toastmaster, Justice of the Peace, and from his exceedingly interesting diary, "The History of Oneida County, New York" was written."."

Richard,
I believe that your original logic was sound. This John Todd born 1739 settled in the Bedminster area, where he evidently had grown up. The date and place of his marriage isn't known with certainty, but based on dates for his children it was about 1766, and I suspect, based on evidence relating to Esmay, that he went from Bedminster to Rumbout Precinct in Dutchess County, married Sarah Ismay there, where he is found on the tax list in 1768 and 1769, and the family then returned to Somerset County, where they stayed, and most of their children settled as well. We find Robert Todd in Rumbout Precinct, on the tax lists from 1776 to 1779, married to Elizabeth Vervalen, whose grandfather sold the property on which Jacob Snyder was born and raised, and Jacob Snyder married Ann/Nancy Ismay, whom I believe was a sister of Sarah. These Esmays were probably originally from NJ as well, as I have found a 1747 mention of "Robert Esmey" being disbursed money from the estate of Quaker John Holcombe of Amwell. Ismay/Esmay is such an uncommon name this is virtually certain to have been someone related to the Rumbout Esmays, and he was probably their father. John Todd and Sarah Ismay named a son "Robert Ismay Todd", a son William and a daughter Jane.
What is of interest to me is that this Robert Todd, "born in the Raritans"
according to his marriage record, and Elizabeth Vervalen named a daughter Jane as well, and I know enough about the Vervalen family that I am certain the use of this name didn't come from the Vervalens. This couple had several sons, and didn't name one William, nor did they use the name James.
First daughter Hester for Elizabeth Vervalen's mother Hester De Graff First son John (for no Vervalen reason) Second daughter Jane (for no Vervalen reason) Second son Gideon (for Hester's grandfather Gideon Vervalen) Third son Isaac (I don't see an explanation in Vervalen) Fourth son Robert (for father) Fifth son Peter (I don't see an explanation in Vervalen) Sixth son Oliver (for Oliver Green, close friend of Robert Todd's, who was executor of his will)
How were John Todd and this Robert Todd related? The hunt is on for a
living male descendant of this line.
Also in the Rumbout Precinct, Dutchess County, NY area was a Thomas Esmay, who married Elizabeth Parmentier, this record showing that he was born in Rumbout Precinct. The Parmentiers were close neighbors of the Snyders and Vervalens. The three Ismays/Esmays, Thomas, Ann/Nancy and Sarah, were contemporaries, born ca 1750, and were almost certainly siblings, probably all born and raised in the Rumbout Precinct area.
Looking at John and Robert Todd from my Ismay/Esmay and Snyder perspective has hopefully been helpful.
Regards, and many thanks for the privilege of corresponding with you Richard.

David Todd, bp at Pleasant Valley church in Nov., 1794, son of William Todd.
They lived just east of Hyde Park, N. Y.; he was a farmer and an exceedingly
handy man--"could do almost anything mechanical." On July 18, 1821,
Catherine was taken into the Hyde Park Church "on confession;"[4] and on Sep. 24. 1848, she died and was
buried in its churchyard.[5] In the early fifties David went out to
Wisconsin; later returned to New York state and died in 1860. Most of the
children moved to Montgomery, Ala., soon after their mother's death.[6]
