Archibald Todd

1763 -1852

Of Ireland, Washington County, Pennsylvania and Belmont County, Ohio

Archibald/Archabold Todd was born in Ireland (based on the birthplace given in the 1850 census) on 12 January 1763 (based on his tombstone).   He first appears in public records in the 1800 census for Chartiers Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania.   It is likely he arrived there a few years earlier as he is reported to have married Nancy Moore about 1795 (based on the birth of their son James Todd in 1796).

DNA from two branches of his descendants matched the DNA of the family of Orr Todd 1838-1881 Belfast; so it is likely that Archibald had a County Antrim origin.   The tradition that Archibald was the son of Archibald Todd who immigrated to South Carolina in 1772, settling in the portion of the Ninety-Six District which later became Greenwood and Saluda Counties, is not supported by the DNA evidence that shows that the families of these two Archibalds had very different male DNA.

Archibald appears in the 1810 census in Chartiers Township and soon thereafter migrated 30 miles west to Flushing Township, Belmont County, Ohio.  Here his daughter Margaret was born in 1816 and son Matthew in 1818.

Archibald and Nancy Todd are listed on a document dated 17 November 1822 as part of the founding group for the Nottingham Presbyterian Church, located in Moorhead Township, Harrison County, just north the Harrison County/Belmont County line.
