The Todd Family of
Fleming County, Kentucky
Todd Family # 132 (TF
132)
Richard McMurtry
December 2012
Between
1800 and 1808, the Todds had settled in far northeast
of Kentucky in those counties that bordered the Ohio River. In 1808, Thomas Todd (1781-1826) married
Margaret Boyd in Lewis County which lay adjacent to Fleming County. Between 1811 and 1824, the Todds bought land in Fleming County.
The 1820 census for Fleming
County KY identifies John Todd as John
Todd Jr implying that their father was John Todd. There is a John Todd who married in 1814 to
“Ambs Alexander” in Fleming County who some assert
was the widow Annis (Wishard)
Alexander (1775-1849) and that as Annis Todd she went
to Johnson County Indiana by 1830 along with daughters Jane b 1815 and Elizabeth Ann b 1818 and her children by
her previous marriages. However, there
is no older male living with her in the 1830 census and the John J Todd buried
in the same cemetery died 1832.
There
is a John Toda/Todd in the 1820 census:
John Todd, 1 male under 10, 1m over age 45.
2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, and one female
over 45.
Presumably
this is the John Todd md Annis
(Wishard) Alexander.
4. Annis
WISHARD17
was born on 25 December 1775 in prob Delaware.8,18,27,28
She died on 15 July 1848 at the age of 72 in Johnson County, Indiana.12,18,29
Also
said to have been born near Philadelphia and also in Delaware. Her sister Nancy
claimed to have been born in Delaware, but both Samuel & Jane, siblings
just older and younger than Annis were born in
Pennsylvania according to the 1850 census.
"The Wishard Family" article says she was born Sept 1776
just before the Battle of Brandywine. The Battle of Brandywine took place Sep
11, 1777; this statement may refer to Jane instead. There is definitely a
problem with the birthdates of Samuel, Annis, and
Jane, although all are believed to have born "on the waters of the
Brandywine". The Kinnick Family Book gives the
year as 1775.
1830
Census, Johnson Co IN
Annis Todd. 2f age 15-20 [Jane & Elizabeth Todd]
and 1f age 50-60 [Annis]
Various Wishard databases give the date of death of
James Todd as 1832, but he did not appear to be living with Annis
in 1830. Perhaps that date represents evidence of his death, not the actual
date.
Not found in 1840
census.

From Kay Haden: Wishard researcher:
I
have that John Todd & Annis were buried Old
Pioneer Clark Cemetery [apparently now called Nolin Cemetery] in Johnson Co IN
across from where he lived on a burial ground given by her daughter Susan
Alexander & husband Archibald Glenn Clark in 1830 from a corner of their
farm where two of their little daughters were buried.
Note by RKM: I think this is sufficient to consider that this John Todd was indeed the husband of Annis Wishard. Also, the 1820Fleming Co KY census does list an older John Todd/John Toda who was over 45, i.e born prior to 1775.
John Todd, 1 male under 10, 1m over age 45. 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, and one female over 45.
