Todds of Fairfield Co., OH (TF 142) and TF 138

Later DNA samples revealed that all three branches of this family shared the same Somerset Co NJ DNA pattern, suggesting that Robert who died in 1793 in Loudon Co MIGHT have come from Somerset County. The three branches were Samuel b 1762 who settled in Campbell Co KY, John d 1823 Fairfield Co OH and Robert Todd b abt 1760

TF 138 is the family of Robert Todd d 1793 Loudon Co. His son Samuel settled in Campbell Co, KY. His son Robert is assumed to be the Robert Todd of Pickaway, Fairfield, Seneca Co. OH.

TF 142 is the family of John Todd d 1823 Fairfield Co, OH who was assumed to also be a son of Robert Todd d 1793. . More research is needed.

There are three families that came to Fairfield Co. OH prior to 1821.

· One was John Todd who md Mary Jarman in Baltimore in 1791 and then came to OH ca 1808. They settled in Violet Twp, but moved to Franklin Co wher John died ca 1823. (This was a part of the Anne Arundel Co group of Todds)

· The other was also a John Todd, but coming from Virginia between 1797 and 1805. John settled in Perry Twp and John died in 1823.

· Also a Robert Todd and his son Samuel b 1786 Virginia came to Pickaway, then Fairfield, then Seneca, then Putnam Co. OH with the Fairfield to Seneca migration paralleling the migrations of branches of the John Todd md Mary Jarman family. )

The Virginia-Ohio Todds

This family seems to have had two individuals - John and Robert Todd - definitely born prior to 1775 and Robert possibly being born 1750-1760 though more likley 1760-1770.

John seems to have had children born in the 1790s in VA and children born in the early 1800s in OH. His wife seems to have been Sarah b 1781 VA.

The family seems full of biblical names, Israel, Jonah, Eli, Joel as well as Reason and Samuel.

The estate settlement abstract is unclear about relationships other than Joel being son of John and John Todd, Jr being an heir. Guardianships suggest that Matilda and Reason were also John's kids.

Some of the family moved to Pickaway Co and some moved on the Desmoines, IA and then to Monroe Twp, Adams Co., IN.

This has name similarities to the family of Robert Todd d 1793 Loudon Co. VA whose sons Samuel and John are assumed to be the Samuel and John who moved to Hampshire Co in the 1780s before moving on to unknown locations. Also a Samuel Todd from the Loudon Co family served in the Revolution, later went to Ohio by 1805 and then to Campbell Co., KY by 1820.

do not live in Putnam County, but am descended from a Robert Todd who moved to Putnam County about 1836. I really know very little about the Todd ancestry, largely because my Father was an only child, and his father the only surviving child who had any children.

Anyhow, what I have is as follows -- working backwards.

ORVILLE VAUGHN TODD August 15, 1899 -- in Columbus Grove. (Note by RKM: This marriage date)

Orville Vaughn Todd -- Born Dec 23, 1869 (Apparently in Henry County)
Died, April 30, 1953. (In Lima).

Orville's Parents were, JOEL TODD, born October 16, 1845 -- Henry CO., Died June 7, 1915. and Eviline Vaughn Todd -- born Vaughnsville, January 10, 1846, Died July 27, 1925. They were married November 11, 1866 at Eviline's Vaughnsville home.

Besides ORVILLE, there were two surviving children, Granville Harry Todd -- Born July 1, 1880. Granville died unmarried. He was a graduate of Ohio State Medical School and employed by the Great Northern Railroad as a Railway Surgeon. He died treating a cholera epidemic in Montana, Nov 26, 1910. There was also an unmarried Daughter, Ardvios Lousia Todd. Born, November, 1877, died April, 1950 She was a long time Methodist Missionary.

JOEL TODD was the son of Robert -- probably the Robert you note. I have a list of probable siblings, but no verification. All of the above is from the hand written Bible Registers that I inherited in a big box when my father died. (I have much more information on the Elwell side of the family.)

There are a number of Land Grants and Cash Sales of land in Putnam, Henry and in or near Urbana Ohio in the 1830's The 1850 Census lists ten TODD farmers in Urbana, all natives of near Hanover PA. (I assume a mass migration of TODD's in the 1830's.) My father remembered being told this was a result of the receipt of land warrents as a result of Military Service (Indian Wars??) -- and indeed the land records for this indicate a mix of cash sales and land warrents.

Vaughn Todd was the son of Joel Todd (born 1845) and Evangeline Vaughn,(born 1846), married November 11, 1868.in Vaughnsville Ohio. -- Orville had one child, in 1907, my father, Leslie Elwell Todd. Orville's wife was Alice Ketchem Elwell. They married in 1899. Orville was a banker -- a whole string of very small Ohio town agricultural banks that mostly failed during the 20's and early 30's. My father was Chief of Procurement for the US Navy for Research and Development when he retired in the eatly 1960's, and thereafter he ran his own personal consulting firm for 20 years in DC until his death.

Orville had two siblings, neither of whom had children. Granville Todd was born July 1, 1880, graduated from Ohio State U. Medical School, and died, November 1910, in a Cholera Epidemic in Montans when he was Railway Surgeon for the Great Northern Railroad.

Orville's Sister, Arlie, was born November, 1877. She never married. She served as a medical missionary for the Methodist Episcopal Church in India for a number of years, and died shortly after she was able to get transport back to the US after WWII. I have her date of death as either 49 or 50. (I think 50 is correct). (She actually founded a school of nursing in Kerla which I visited in the 1980's -- they did not know their founder had any relatives when this niece showed up and wanted to be told the story of the school, and see everything.)

Leslie, Married Virginia Jackson-Alexander on Sept 23, 1934 at First Methodist Church, Akron Ohio. Virginia died in 1977 and Leslie died in 1983 -- both in Alexandria Virginia.
