Descendants of John Todd d 1774/1775 Chester Co PA

Todd Family 18

Richard McMurtry inherited this descendancy chart when he began researching the Chester County PA Todds.   It contains some excellent information and many errors and omissions.  I have attempted to add some of the missing lines and correct some of the errors.  It is a good introduction to this family.   This family includes John Todd, the Quaker Attorney who married Dorothy Payne (later Dolly Madison) who died in the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793 in Philadelphia.  Included below is a link to a portrait of John’s brother James Todd.

DNA obtained in 2022 revealed that this family had County Armagh origins.

"The Story of Dorothea Payne (Dolley Madison)

After her Quaker parents moved from Virginia to Philadelphia, Dorothea

Payne, 22 years old, married John Todd, Jr. under the care of Pine Street

Meeting.  He was the son of a Quaker schoolmaster and a rising young

lawyer.  They bought a house which is still standing at Fourth and Walnut

Streets.

For three years all went well.  Then came the yellow fever epidemic of

1793.  John Todd and both his parents died.  So did one of the two sons

which had been born to the young couple.  Dorothea survived, a widow with a

young child.  Within a year a new chapter in her life began. Philadelphia

was then the capital of the new nation.  The President and

Martha Washington lived only two blocks away from the Todd home. Congress

and the Supreme Court were sitting at the State House.  The social life of

the city was astir with distinguished personages from all the states.  One

day, Dorothea Todd sent an excited message to her friend, Eliza Lee: "Thee

must come to me.  Aaron Burr says the great

little Madison has asked to be brought to see me."

Aaron Burr was United States Senator from New York, and James Madison,

"Father of the Constitution" was a Congressman from Virginia.  He was 17

years older than Dorothea, but before the year was out they were

married. They moved to Washington when the new "Federal City" was ready,

Madison serving as Secretary of State under President Thomas Jefferson.

Since Jefferson was a widower, Dorothea Payne Todd Madison was called upon

to be White House hostess.  She won a reputation for her charm and grace,

serving throughout Jefferson's two terms and then

as the nation's First Lady for eight more years when James Madison

succeeded Jefferson as President. Dorothea was almost always called by her

nickname, but she had a habit of spelling it two diferent ways - sometimes

"Dolley" and sometimes "Dolly".  When her little brick house in

Philadelphia was made part of Independence National Historical Park,

historians of the National Park Service studied all the available documents

and concluded that the preferred spelling is "Dolley."

The Powell/Todd marriage record, from Quaker records is not in question.

Nor are the Quaker records that indicate the removal of Ann and her

daughters from Pennsylvania to N. Carolina.  Those records are available

and are well recognized as primary source materials.  But there is no

Quaker record for John or any sons transferring their membership from

Pennsylvania to North Carolina.  In fact, John had been disowned by the

Quakers.  And no one has been able to find a will for John Powell, nor for

Ann Todd Powell, and without one or more of those documents, evidence of

any sons is somewhat shakey, especially Benjamin and Hugh.   We are not

even absolutely sure of Abraham, though he has been generally accepted.

There is convincing evidence, from one line of descendants, that Joseph

Powell was the son of John and Ann.
