William Todd 1765-1828 PA/W VA

This family history was compiled from various sources by Bill Marshall utilizing the sources he has so thoroughly documented.  Y-DNA sample from a member of this family to be a 25 marker match to the Todds who settled in Co Down in the 1600s and in Ardstraw, Co Tyrone, and in Co Londonderry in Ireland.

The synthesis of the early history of the family appears to have come from the following major sources:

(1)  Letter from William Neely Todd (1837-1926) written at the age of 79 in 1916 discussing his grandfather William Todd (1765-1828) from what he was told by his family.  He remembered they immigrated from Ireland to Philadelphia and then to western Pennsylvania.

(2)  Letters from Frank L Todd (1861-1936) written in 1935 discussing a conversation in 1898 with a Dr John Todd (b abt 1818) in Wilmington DE who claimed to be the nephew of William Todd b 1765 married Elizabeth Neely.  concerning the Todd immigration into New London, Connecticut in 1754, migrating to NJ and then to Lancaster Co. where one part went to Delaware and then on into Virginia and the other going to Washington County.   There is a Lancaster John Todd b 1765 who married Mary Eberman but the fate of their children has never been unearthed.  There is another Lancaster family that is unrelated in the portion of that county that became Dauphin Co that migrated to Rowan Co NC.     We can not corroborate the migration history nor the names of the brothers of William nor the identity of the Doctor John Todd who spoke with Frank in 1898.

(3) Todd Family (possibly “Todd Family of West Virginia”, author unknown which stated: “John Todd and wife, Mary Gillespie, lived in Milltown Co Antrim, Ireland, andwere linen weavers.  Their sons John and William emigrated to this countryfirst and were followed by James and George.  They settled in Maryland it is reported -- also a record says they settled in Chester Co. PA.

(4) a typewritten manuscript prepared in or after 1940, author unknown, titled “Gillespie Notes”.

(5) Flyleaf in book written in 1886 in the possession of William Todd 1805-1888 which stated:  “About the year 1800, Grandfather, whose name is John Todd, and his family whose name we will give came to these United States.  William, James, Thomas, Martha, Jinnie, and Mary.  My father, William Todd, married Elizabeth Neely soon after they crossed the sea and settled in West Virginia, Ohio County.  The names of their children are as follows: John, William (the author of thesenotes), Mary, James, Jane, Dorcas, Wallace, Thomas, Joseph, and Martha.

There is a Milltown in Co Tyrone where Todds with the same DNA pattern lived. Co Tyrone is where Elizabeth Neeley was alleged to have been born.

So all that is certain is that there was an Irish origin and a Washington Co arrival around 1800.    The evidence of where they landed and the sojourn to western PA is conflictual.  The best documented of the family is William Todd 1765-1828.

Richard McMurtry believes that the references to Belfast, County Antrim and Milltown, County Antrim are a mistake and that the Milltown that was remembered was actually in County Tyrone, where there is a matching DNA pattern in the parish of Ardstraw. A Big Y sample from the Ardstraw family might confirm (or refute) this theory.

Letter from William N. Todd to neice, Mrs. D. S. (Hazel) Meaden, 429 WilliamsBlvd, Springfield, IL, from

Crestline, Ohio, April 1916

My Grandfather William Todd never left any family tree records that I everheard of except what was

verbal.  Grandfather William died when my fatherJames was about 16 years old with only a few days

sickness.  Grandfather Wmwas conceded the most powerful man in all the community.  He was drafted

to bea soldier in the War of 1812; was gone several weeks but did not reach thefront before peace was

proclaimed and he was mustered out.  My grandmothersname before married, was Betty Neely.  She

had two sisters and three brothers, all of whom I knew well.  As to grandfathers brothers and sisters I

could notsay how many but evidently several.

A little colony Neelys' Todds, Gillespys' kindreds migrated from Ireland. They first settled near

Philadelphia where they landed, I believe WestchesterCounty.  From this place they separated.  Some

of the Todds going up theHudson N.Y., some to Ky, some to some of the counties east of Pittsburgh.

Grandfather William Todd, the Neelys', and Gilespy coming to near Claysville,Washington County, PA.

After a short sojourn, grandfather Todd purchased theold farm home near West Alexander, Pa., just

over the Ohio border into Pa.They moved when father was 7 years old [1816].  Grandfather then built

thelargest and finest hewn two story log house in the whole country, togetherwith a then-largest

weaving shop.  Running four imported weavers looms.  Hewas a professional weaver by trade in Ireland,

and his children (my uncles andaunts) William, John, Dorcas, Jane, Mary, and Martha were all expert

weavers, and paid for the old farm by weaving linens of all grades up to 95 threads tothe inch - fine.  And

flannels, blankets for home use, as well aswoolsey-lincy that went to England.  Growing the wool and

the flax on the farmand preparing it all by hand (without any machinery) to make the product. Many a

time, grandmothers spinning wheel was sung me to sleep when I was achild. [Ref: William Todd 4/1916]

letter from Dr. Frank L. Todd, March 20, 1935

I have lived in Pittsburgh since 1888, until last October when I had asevere attack of Angina Pectoris

which compelled me to stop all work.  InAugust 1898, I spent a week in Wilmington, Del.  While there, I

met a DoctorJohn Todd, and in conversation with him, got the following information.  Hewas then 80

years old.  I was 37.  He told me that William Todd who marriedElizabeth Neely was his uncle.  His

father John Todd and William Todd werebrothers.  That these ancestors came from Ireland to America

later in November1754; landed at New London, Conn., where they remained that winter and goingthen

to some place in New Jersey where they remained for three years.  Theythen divided to go west and

went to Lancaster Co, PA, where they remaineduntil after the Revolutionary War.  There was a large

colony of them and landin Lancaster Co cost too much for them, so the colony split - one part goingto

Delaware, and then on into Virginia.  The other part went on into (west)Westmoreland Co, PA, from this

colony, a smaller one split off and proceededfarther west into what is now Washington, Co, Pa.

Stopping about one milesouth of the present borough of Claysville, and there my father James

Sawhillwas born.  The 7th of 10 children.  When James was 3 years old, Grandfather(Wm Todd and Eliz

Neely) again moved across the line into the panhandle ofVirginia, Ohio County.  In this colony were the

names Neely, Byers, McDonald,Yates, Sawhill, Larrimor, Lughlin, Smith, Todd, Sutherlands, McCoy,

Craig,Stewarts, Gillespie, and others. [Ref: Frank Todd 3/20/1935]

another letter from Dr. Frank Todd, date unknown:

At the close of the war, the government made some trouble over thedistribution of land and many

farmers were ejected.  They heard that land wascheap in the western part of the state, so they decided

to hasten thither. The colony kept together for safety and to keep from getting lost in thedense forests.

The whole colony traveled partly on foot and partly onhorseback - their goods carried in packsaddles.

The reason for the location near West Alexander, Pa, is that some kin ofWilliam Todd and Elzabeth

Neely had settled in the vacinity of Five Ridges(West Alexander); some land was to be had by pre-

emption or homesteading; theland was good and the Colonists tired from their long trek from Lancaster,

decided to settle there. [Ref: Frank Todd c1935]

John Todd and wife, Mary Gillespie, lived in Milltown Co Antrim, Ireland, andwere linen weavers.  Their

sons John and William emigrated to this countryfirst and were followed by James and George.  They

settled in Maryland it isreported -- also a record says they settled in Chester Co. PA.

How long they lived in either place is not known but early in the years ofthe 1800's William bought a

farm in Virginia the nearest town being WestAlexander, Pa. Here he set up a linen weaving

establishment fine linens andlinsy-woolsy which they sold in England.  William died when his son

James wasa small boy.  William enlisted in the war of 1812 but did not see activeservice.

Milltown, Ireland, is now a part of Belfast according to report.

George Todd settled in Kentucky and no trace of him has been found.[Ref: TODD Family]

letter from William N. Todd, Crestline, Ohio, to Mrs D.S. (Hazel) Meaden, 429Williams Blvd, Springfield,

   .......

Now as to a little history on Grandmothers side.  Neelys' were all home inIreland at a place known as

Milltown on account of its natural water-poweradvantages and is the greatest flax growing and

producing section in Ireland.Large flax industries are operated continuously by water power.  A

largelanded estate surrounding this linen manufacturing little city as well as allof the site of the city was

bequeathed to my grandmothers sister Mary on theday of her infant baptism, and was thus recorded in

the archives of the church(Presbyterian), where a faithful record of every child born in the church

waskept, and also recorded by the same hand in the family bible, so the two wouldcorrespond and

corroberate, neither being of any value without the other.  Thelanguage was "that she and hers were the

heirs as long as grass grew and waterran".  Now when she became a young woman and all she loved

on earth and wasdearer to her than all else besides, was to be parted from her to come toAmerica, she

could not be persuaded to remain behind, although a millionaireif she had.  She came with the rest, and

married a noble Christian man; raiseda lovely and respected family of five, two sons and three

daughters on a farmadjoining ours.  Where Uncle and Aunt died, and their boys and girls went toKansas

about 50 years since.  All dead except the descendant, my name-sake.

But you ask about the inheritance.  Well, that is dead also.  Sometimeafter coming to America, the

family bible containing a-fore-said record, misteriously disappeared; never was or could be found.

Agents went and tracedthe whole business up but nothing doing unless first producing the bible

withcorresponding record as that in the church record.  After so many years hadelapsed according to

their law, it passed into Chancery, was sold anddeposited in Bank of England, London, to nation's credit.

I guess Englandneeds it now worse than we do; it will help then to run down the Germans.  Itwould

amount now to several millions.  So our people have contributed (I won'tsay willingly) a reasonably good

share to help on the right side of this awfulun-godly war. [Ref: William Todd 4/1916]

soon after her arrival in Washington Co, PA, attempts were made to have theestate settled in her favor;

even as late as 1920 some descendants were tryingto re-open the case.  Terms were that when she

became a young woman the legacywas to be hers and her heirs, but the family Bible in which the

bequest wasrecorded was lost.  The will is said to be recorded along with the baptism inthe archives of

the Presbyterian Church, but the law of the time required thatthe Church records and the family Bible

entry be written "in the same hand"and the estate could not be settled without the Bible to prove identity.

Thecase of the legacy was settled in court; the decision was that there no provenlegal heirs, and the

estate reverted to the Crown [Ref: Shields SAWHILL p11]
