Todd Family 31 (TF 31)
The Family of Thomas Todd 1619-1675
of Denton, Durham County, England, Gloucester &
King and Queen County Virginia and Baltimore, Maryland
The
family of Thomas Todd of Virginia and Maryland is one of the oldest Todd
families in America, having arrived in 1637 or 1644 (depending on source). He was born 1619 in Denton, County Durham
in the north of England. He secured land
in New Norfolk County, VA as a result of transporting individuals to America.
He then bought land in Gloucester County, and later in what became King and
Queen County. He himself removed to
Baltimore but some of his descendants continued to live on his King and Queen County
lands. He died on board his ship
Virginia while transporting tobacco to England to sell in 1675.
The
history of the early generations of the family is described in detail in
various Virginia genealogical publications.
The
most famous of this family was Thomas Todd 1765-1826, appointed by James
Madison to the US Supreme Court.
I
have focused my efforts on trying to identify the branches of this family that
migrated from Kentucky to Washington and Franklin County Missouri and on fleshing
out the less studied branches of Woodford County Kentucky.
It
remains for some stalwart soul to take on the task of writing a comprehensive narrative
of this family similar to that done by John Edwards Todd d 1907 and George Iru Todd d 1925 concerning the family of Christopher Todd 1616-1686
of Yorkshire and New Haven Connecticut.
We
were able to identify the Richard W. Todd 1781-1836 who came from Franklin
County Kentucky to Washington County Missouri as the son of Richard Todd b 1755
and Mary Lankford of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Richard b 1755 was the brother of the Thomas
Todd, the Supreme Court justice.
We
were not able to identify the genetically identical John A. Todd b 1815
Virginia md 1836 Washington County MO d 1859 Crawford Co MO or the Charles
Rankin Todd b 1817 Kentucky d 1869 Franklin County, MO (just to the north of
Washington County, though we suspect they are somehow related to the Pittsylvania
or Charlotte County Virginia branches of this family. We were also able to flesh out some of the
descendants of the William Todd 1750-1815 of the Pittsylvania Co. Virginia to
Woodford County, Kentucky branch.
Here
are some links to aspects of this family and below that is some of the narrative
history from internet sources.

Narrative
1:
The progenitor of this family was
Thomas Todd who came from London and settled on lands in Gloucester
County. By the time of his death in
1675/1676, he owned a large tract on the Mattsapruy
River, in the county of King and Queen, and of another tract, containing about
one thousand acres, lying in the Dragon's Swamp, in the parish of St. Stephens,
in the said County of King and Queen.
His son Thomas in 1709 bequeathed 500 acres of the Mattsapruy
River land to his son William and heirs by his wife Martha Vicaris
and by his will of 1723 bequeathed the Dragon’s Swamp land to his sons Phillip and
Richard. Phillip and Richard died
without male heirs and so the land reverted to their brother William.
Thomas Todd, late of the County
of Gloucester, gentleman, was in his lifetime seized in fee of and in divers large tracts of land, and, among others, one of
certain tract or parcel of land in the said County, situated lying and being
near the North River bridge, containing six hundred acres, with the
appurtenances and
being so thereof seized did make
his last will and testament in writing bearing date of 4th day of March, in the
year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty-two.
Names grandson, Bernard Todd, son
of Richard Todd also
William, grandson of Richard Todd; names son William, son Philip, son
Christopher. (Bernard Todd was born
1740s, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Waring Todd and grandson of William Todd and
Martha Vicaris; William b 1750 was
son of Richard d 1766 and grandson of William Todd d 1736)
When William died in 1736, he
bequeathed a large part of this property to his son Richard (wife Elizabeth
Richards).
Around the time of the Revolution
or just before, one branch of the family remained in King and Queen, but other
branches moved southwesterly into the frontier counties of southern Virginia
and one branch moved to Georgia.
·
The children of Richard and Elizabeth Richards
Todd moved to Halifax Co, the Pittsylvania Co by 1770 and then moved on to
Woodford and Franklin Co Kentucky between 1785 and 1795. This branch included Thomas Todd b 1765 the
Supreme Court Justice.
·
The children of Thomas and Elizabeth Waring Todd
dispersed in various directions;
·
Son William b 1738 remained in King and Queen Co
·
Son Bernard b 1744 was still in King and Queen
Co in 1779, but by 1783 was in neighboring King William County and then by 1786
had made the big move southwest to Charlotte Co where he died in 1814.
·
Son Bartlett Pollard Todd was born in Charlotte
about 1786, by 1840 was in Dinwiddie Co, by 1850 in Nottoway Co.
·
Son Joseph b 1789 was in Prince Edward Co
adjacent to Charlotte in 1820 and by 1830 was in Nottoway Co.
·
Son Christopher b 1781 married in Prince Edward
in 1809, later moved to Maury Co, TN.
·
Son Henry b 1740s was in King and Queen in 1779
but soon thereafter moved to Georgia where he died in Burke Co in 1788/1789.
Narrative
2:
Thomas
TODD was born on 12 Sep 1619 in Denton, Durham, England. He died on 30 May 1675
in At Sea/North Parish, Patapsco River, Baltimore County, MD.
Captain Thomas Todd of Virginia
and Baltimore Coun ty was baptized in Denton, England
in 1619. He came to Virginia in 1637 and wa s granted
lands in New Norfolk Count for transporting four persons. He patented Toddsbury in Gloucester County in 1652 and there he erected
a dwelling for hi s wife and children. Toddsbury was inherited by his oldest son Thomas Todd. The
simple but beautifully-proportioned house of Toddsbury
is still standing and has been restored and furnished with antiques by its
present owner. It is some times opened to visitors in
Garden Tour Week. [NOTE: Toddsbury is now known as
the North River Inn.]
Captain Thomas Todd was a
shipowner, owning the ships Augustine and Virginia. He had extensive land
holdings in Virginia as well as in Maryland.
The name of Captain Thomas Todd
of Toddsbury appears in Maryland records of August
17, 1664, in connection with the purchase of lands on Patapsco River. He
described himself as living in Gloucester County, Virginia. In 1669,
designating himself a resident of Patapsco River, Captain Thomas Todd purchased
North Point, a tract of 300 acres on the north side of the Patapsco. This was
the site of the famous Battle of North Point, fought on September 12, 1814
between the American and British forces in the War o f
1812. In June 1669 Captain Thomas Todd purchased 400 acres of additional lands
and in 1670 he received warrants for 1200 acres for having transported 24
persons to Maryland. He was a burgess of Baltimore County in 1674 and 1675. The
will of Captain Thomas Todd was probated on May 20, 1677. By it he devised to
his brother Christopher Todd of London a tract of land called Todley situated in Queens Anne County, Maryland. Through
Christopher Todd the Todds have been traced to Denton
in Durham COunty, England.
Captain Thomas Todd married Ann
Gorsuch, the daughter of Rev. John Gorsuch, whose wife Ann was a daughter of
Sir William Lovelace, and sister of Richard Lovelace, the poet, and of Colonel
Francis Lovelace, Gov. of New York. The Gorsuch-Lovelace ancestry is a
distinguished one. Rev. John Gorsuch was a staunch supporter of King Charles I
and, according to tradition, he met his death in 1647 when the Puritans caused himt o be smothered in a
haystack. The widow Gorsuch then came to Virginia with the children, as her
brother, Colonel Francis Lovelace, was in Virginia at that time.
After the death of Captain Thomas
Todd, his widow Ann Gorsuch Todd married Captain David Jones, who lived at
Cole's Harbor, part of the site of the city of Baltimore. Captain Jones, who
gave his name to Jones Falls, the stream which runs through Baltimore, arising
in the Green Spring Valley, had a dwelling house at what is approximately the
corner of High and Fayette Streets in downtown Baltimore. This tract,
originally Cole's Harbor, was later re-patented by James Todd, son of Captain
Thomas Todd, and called "Todd's Range". It extended from Broadway on
the east to Howard Street on the west, the northern boundary being Madison
Street and the southern boundary the Baltimore waterfront. When Baltimore Town
was established in 1729 "Todd's Range" was subdivided into building
lots.
Captain David Jones died in 1686
and his widow, Ann Gorsuch Todd Jones, then married Captain John Oldton of Garrison Forest. Captain Oldton
was commanding officer of the Baltimore County Rangers at Garrison on the
Reisterstown Road. One of the properties which he and his wife owned was Darley
Hall, located at what is now Harford Road and North Avenue in Baltimore City,
extending northward to Darley Avenue. This tract was sold to John Ensor in
1697.
