Col ANDREW TODD ancestor of the other Todds of Antrim, New Hampshire, was born in Ireland in 1697 His parents James Todd and Rachel Nelson were both born in Scotland He was married in Ireland to Beatrix Moore daughter of John Moore who was murdered in the massacre of Glencoe Scotland in 1692 Andrew Todd was not one of the first settlers but arrived in Londonderry in the year 1720 He soon became a leading man in town was often moderator of their public meetings was fourteen years a selectman was representative of the town in the provincial legislature was an officer in the French war of 1744 and again in the war of 1755 in the course of which he was promoted to the rank of colonel His military reputation was of the best In his old age he went to live with his daughter in Peterborough but survived there less than a year dying Sept 15 1777
Of his eight children we have we have only room to say that they were as follows Samuel who was born in Londonderry June 3 1726 married first Hannah Morrison and second Ann Cochran and settling in Peterborough was killed by the fall of a tree March 30 1765 Rachel who married Moses Morrison and lived in Hancock John who was drowned at Amoskeag Falls at the age of twenty four James who inherited the homestead of his father in Londonderry but died soon after Jane who married William Miller of Peterborough Andrew who was called Uncle Andrew by everybody led a wandering life never married was full of jokes and stories and loved a drop of spirit a little too well At one time he stopped over night with Samuel Duncan of Hancock carrying his faithful jug In the morning he went out in the woods where Duncan was chopping and lay down to sleep near by having his jug beside his head A large hemlock tree fell the wrong way and the limbs crashed down on to the sleeping man Duncan ran and pulled him out crying Uncle Andrew are you dead Uncle Andrew are you dead I can t tell Sam but hand us the jug we ll na part wi dry lips Todd lived to wet his lips a good many times after that The other child of Col Andrew was Capt Alexander who was born Jan 2 1731 married Letitia Duncan lived on a beautiful farm in Hooksett and died in Londonderry at the age of seventy He was a captain in the French war was taken prisoner by the Indians and after due time they prepared to burn him according to their custom When all was ready they stripped him naked but just as they got his shirt off over his head he sprang away and ran for his life He was hotly pursued but managed to escape was three days and nights naked in the woods and succeeded in reaching his camp in safety Capt Alexander Todd left several children one of whom was Andrew who married Margaret Duncan and was father of Josiah D Todd and George Todd of Antrim.

He died unmarried upon the homestead in Londonderry. Samuel the second child was born June 1720 He married 1st Hannah Morrison 2nd Ann Cochran lie settled in Peterboro where he was killed by the fall of a tree Mch 30 1765. Mary the third child was born July 31 1728 Alexander the fourth child of Andrew was born June 2 1730 He like his father earned a good military reputation was a captain in the French war and was once taken prisoner by the Indians who intended to burn him to death But while they were taking off his clothes lie watched his opportunity and just as they were drawing his shirt over his head he by a sudden spring regained his liberty and though hotly persued reached the camp in safety not however until he had spent three days and three nights in the forest His wife was Letitia Duncan The best years of his life were spent upon a fine farm in Hooksett He died in Londonderry at the age of seventy The remaining children of Col Andrew were Rachel who was born Apr 14 1733 and married Moses Morrison and lived in Hancock John born Apr 18 1735 who was drowned at the Amoskeag Falls when twenty four years of age Jean born Mch 9 1736 married William Miller of Peterboro Andrew born Jan 11 1738, never married.
JAMES TODD who began upon the Todd place about the year 1785 was the son of Samuel and Ann Cochran Todd mentioned above Samuel went from Londonderry to Peterboro in 174 built a camp in the forest and commenced to clear the land around about for a farm He carried his grain lo Townsend Mass to be ground On one occasion when he was there to mill some Indians came to his camp and stole all the provisions they could find He had however taken the precaution to bury the greater part of his stores in a secure place in the wood He was a hardy fearless young man and endured much while striving to secure a competence and when that was even within his reach he was killed by a falling tree Mar 30 1765 It was a terrible stroke to the family and the neighborhood but the hard working much enduring one was gone He married 1st Hannah hard working much enduring one was gone He married 1st Hannah laughter of John and Margaret Wallace Morrison who died Nov 1760 leaving two children Hetty and John He married 2nd Ann Cochran in 1762 by whom he had also two children Jane and James Betty the oldest child of Samuel died at Peterboro unmarried Aug 24 1826 aged seventy two years John the second child born Apr 1757 was a soldier throughout the war of the Revolution He returned to the homestead in Peterboro in 1783 and married 1st Rachel daughter of Dea Oeorge Duncan 2nd Sarah Smith Annan widow of Rev David Annan He died Oct 27 1846 Jane the third child born in 1763 married John Morrison and lived in Hancock where she died about the year 1820 James who was the youngest child was born in Peterboro probably about the close of the year 1764 He married 1st Unity Paige of Goffstown 2nd Sarah Miller Duncan cousin of Gen James Miller of Peterboro He died in this town Dec 8 1841 His second wife died here Oct 3 1849 All of his children save the last two were by the first marriage arid all except the oldest were born in this town They were

4 Anna b July 13 1791 in John Sargent of Marshfield Vt and long resided in Marshfield.

Mr Bell was born in the vicinity of Coleraine probably in the parish of Ballymony in the county of Antrim in 1678 He married Elizabeth Todd a daughter of John Todd and Rachel Nelson and sister of Col Andrew Todd He appears to have held a respectable position among his townsmen and for several years held various offices in the town He died July 8 1743 aged sixty four years
