Andrew Todd was born in County Antrim in 1795 and, in 1810, he emigrated as a lad of 15 from Belfast to Charleston.[1] By 1818, he was in Garrard County Kentucky where he married Millie Layton, daughter of the Stephen Layton of Spartanburg Co SC.

He migrated to Jefferson Co Indiana after the birth of his son John Todd in 1821 and died there between 1850 and 1860.[2]

The 1840 census does not account for all six sons but rather has only four, but the 1830 census does have 6 sons but also has an unidentified male old enough to be a younger brother of Andrew (born 1800-1810). Not sure if we have more proof for his son-ship.

My earliest known TODD was Andrew Todd, born in County Antrim, North.

Ireland in 1795. He left Belfast in April 1810 and arrived in Charleston, SC

in Nov. or Dec. He became involved with the family of Stephen Layton in

Union and Spartanburg Counties. Stephen served on petite and grand juries

and inventoried and administered estates up to around 1800 and then seems to

have disappeared. He was closely associated with a Thomas Todd who d. by 21

Aug. 1809. I don't know if Thomas was related to Andrew but it's possible.

Andrew Todd m. Stephen Layton's youngest dau., Millie, in 1818 after the

Layton family had moved to Garrard Co., KY. Andrew and Millie then moved on

to Jefferson Co., IN where they raised their family and died in the early

1850s.

There are several similarities that would indicate that we may be talking about the same family. I recently acquired copies of old Andrew Todd's naturalization papers. He was b. in 1795 in County Antrim, not Dublin, and left Belfast in April 1810. He arrived at Charleston, SC in Dec. 1810. He was still alive for the 1850 census in Jeff. Co., IN but I don't find him after that. His son, Thomas Todd, who died at Andersonville, was there on the 1860 census with 3 children, Nora, 7, Jane, 5, and John, 3. No wife is listed. I found a marriage record for Andrew Todd and Millie Layton on the LDS website. (Another record lists her as Millie Akins.) They m. in Garrard Co, KY 29 April 1818. Andrew Todd is listed there in the 1820 census and another Andrew Todd in Shelby Co, KY. I believe the latter is of another line.

My g. grandfather, Andrew Jackson Todd b.1834 Madison,IN (father from Ireland)is buried in Massac Co,IL. John L. Todd b.1821 in Ky is also buried here. Local historians say John was Andrew's uncle and he raised him after Andrew's father died when he was 11. Andrew served in Civil W. Married Mary Jane Wood 1869 & died 1918. John served in Mex. War.
D.1905.

John Layton Todd marr. Minerva Aikens 8 Dec 1867 in Massac Co., IL. They had at least 4 children: John M., 1870, C. N. (f), 1872, Desso, 1874, and Laura Millie, 1877. Birth dates are approximate based on 1880 census. At that time, there were 2 stepsons living with the family named William and Levy Aikens. So Minerva was probably marr. earlier. Desso marr. William Taylor 1 Oct 1899 in Massac Co.

Seeking information on Francis C. Todd, b. in Jefferson Co., IN abt. 1822 who m. Anne Emberson 21 March 1844 in Jeff. Co. They had at least 4 children: Josephine, 1845, Minerva, 1848, Thomas, 1851, and Elizabeth, 1853. Birth dates are approximate, taken from census schedules. They lived for some time in Massac Co., IL. I have more info on the parents of Francis and Anne. Francis was the brother of my grt. grandfather, James W. Todd.

Looking for info on descendants of Andrew TODD, b. 1796 IRE, m. Milly AKINS, b. 1794, SC. First son, John, b. 1821, KY, became a boatman on the OH River. Other children b. in IN: Thomas, 1824, died in Andersonville Prison during the CW, Albert, 1828, James, 1830, Margett, 1833, Andrew, 1836, and Martha, 1837. The family farmed in Milton township, Jefferson Co, IN. James TODD m. Rebecca HAMILTON and moved to Greenwood, Johnson Co, IN. They had Fanny, 1861, Sarah J., 1868, Bertha, 1871, Arthur Omer, 1874, and Willie May, 1878. James and Rebecca died in Indianapolis in 1914 and 1916.
