Notes
for JOHN EDWARD STEWART:
John
moved from Pickens Dist. SC to Macon Ga. There he met and married his
wife. He apparently worked in textiles
in the card room. Later, he became a
policeman in Macon. One day he was
brought
home
by other police officers. He was laid on
the bed and his daughter remembers the bloody covers
on the bed and also that the room was filled with fellow officers. He had been injured in the line of duty. No records can be found to ascertain what
happened to him, but he remained an invalid for the next four years before he
died.

Notes
for LILLIE CATHERINE [KATE] STEWART:
Catherine
was a home maker. She and her husband
farmed, raised 5 daughters and were very religious. Catherine played the organ at church and at
home. She and all the daughters were
good singers. The youngest daughter,
Celeste also played the organ and guitar. When all the girls came home at the
same time, they would gather around the organ and sing while their mother,
"Kate" played the organ.
Documentation
of her daughter, Verner's, application for her social security card dated March
27, 1937, list her mother's name as Kathleen Lillie. Verner named her daughter
Millie Kathleen after her mother and grandmother. Census list her as Lillie and as Kate. Her death certificate list her as Catherine.
Her brother, Jim Stewart, named a daughter, Kathleen, after his sister, Kate.

Notes
for AUGUSTUS [GUS] ELLIOTT PRATHER:
"Gus"
was a farmer, worked in textiles in the card room, and was a Baptist
minister. In August 1909 {Keowee
Courier} he got his left hand caught in a card and it had to be amputated mid
forearm. He continued to raise his
family on the farm, and to preach the gospel.
He had an alter on the back of their land near Little River. When the need arose, he would go to the river
and get a flat rock from the river bed and after a special prayer, he would put
the rock on the alter. He had a stroke
and the last few years of his life he could not talk nor walk. However, he continued to have a special smile
for everyone. That smile has been handed
down to his descendents. So has his twinkling blue
eyes.
He
went by the name G.E. Prather [as recorded in his obituary]. However, his death certificate list his
middle name as Alex. Daughter, Verner,
list his middle name as Alex on her application for her social security card,
dated March 27, 1937.

"SOLDIER
IS KILLED ON HIS WAY HOME"
Claude Todd, of Belton, Instantly Killed in
Accident. Was killed by auto. driven by two other Belton Men-all soldiers
coming home.
Mr.
Claude Todd, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Todd of Belton was instantly killed
early Christmas
morning
when a motorcycle he was riding crashed into a Ford automobile occupied by Messrs M.G. Gaines and Henry Watkins, also soldiers from
Camp Sevier, whose homes are in Belton.
It seems from what can be learned that the
young man was coming to Belton to spend the Christmas
holidays
with their people. The accident happened
about ten miles out from Greenville on the Augusta
Road
and demolished both the Ford and the motorcycle. Messrs. Watkins and Gaines were violently
shaken up and Mr. Todd killed instantly when the two vechicles
crashed. The occupants of the car
stated
they did not see the motorcycle and were not aware of its presence until they
struck it.
Mr. Todd was instantly killed. His body was taken to Greenville and was kept
there until Wednesday
morning
when it was sent to Belton to his home for burial.
Messers. Watkins
and Gaines are grief stricken over the tragic death of their fellow soldier and
townsman, and though their injuries were extremely painful and serious, they
are surely not fatally
hurt.
All three of the men were soldiers from the
118th infantry, Camp Sevier and were on their way home to
spend
Christman day. They were all volunteers,
having volunteered early in the war.
Arrangements for the funeral of Mr. Todd
have not been completed.
