This essay begins with a summary of what is known about the Todd family of Washington County Virginia and Pulaski County Kentucky.  It is followed by a longer essay that provides more detail, supporting documentary sources and a detailed family tree.

Background

It all began in the early 1790s.  Our nation was new.  George Washington was the first President under the new Constitution.  The frontier was still wild in those days.  The end to the wars against the Indians in the old northwest (NW Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana) was still several years away.  The Indians of Tennessee still dominated most of that state and were still retaliating for depredations in the settlements around Nashville.

Sometime in the early 1790s, a Todd family that included James Todd, John Todd and Patrick Todd migrated from northern Ireland to Washington County in southwest Virginia.[1]

Almost twenty years later, in 1811, Elizabeth Todd (1749-1847) settled on Buck Creek in northern Pulaski County, Kentucky.[2]   With her were 4 boys aged 10 to 19, William Todd, Anderson Todd, Thomas Todd and Henry Todd.

Thirty years later, in 1843, Robert Todd b 1790 came from Indiana (where he had been living since before the 1820s) and settled in Pulaski County after living briefly in Whitley Co, KY.[3]

Recent research shows that all these Todds are related and this essay tells what we have learned about the origins of these Todds.

To complicate matters, there was a Joseph Todd 1780-1827 (unrelated to the other Pulaski Co Todds) who came to Pulaski County and died there in 1827.[4]   He had come with his brother James G. Todd to Russell County Virginia about 1801, then left there in 1810 to come to Kentucky.  Though he was no relation to the Pulaski County Todds, he may have known them because his wife Charity Henninger probably grew up as a neighbor to the Washington County Todds.

            Todds in Washington County

The three adult Todds that came into Washington County in the 1790s were:  James Todd who bought land in 1792/3, John Todd who appears on the tax lists by 1794, and a Patrick  Todd who died in 1798.

Neither James nor Patrick got to enjoy for long the opportunities and the promise that living on the frontier offered them.  Patrick died in 1798, apparently single, leaving only an inventory of his personal property which included a whiskey still!  James Todd was mentioned at the filing of the estate inventory, suggesting a family connection.[5]

James bought several hundred acres of land, though he sold most of it by 1801.  He died in 1801, leaving a widow Jane and three minor children, Thomas born about 1796, Robert born about 1798 and Mary born about 1801.

John Todd seems to have had the opportunity to live a long life and see his children grow up.   He seems to have had several children, many of whom were born in the 1780s before coming to Washington County.  In 1810, he left the county, with his two remaining sons John Todd b abt 1781 and a younger son born 1794-1800 (who may have been the Robert Todd who later settled in Pulaski County) and three daughters.  John Todd Jr settled in Indiana by 1811 and we assume that the rest of the family of John Todd Sr did also.[6]

At least one branch of the Todds of Pulaski County had a tradition in the family that they had come from Washington County Virginia, children of a William Todd, but we have not been able to find any evidence for such a William Todd nor likely parents of any name in Washington Co.

The evidence for a link of the Pulaski County Todds to a William Todd in Washington County is this:  William H Todd b 1826, (son of Anderson Todd b 1797 Virginia) on his 1877 marriage record in Pulaski County said his father was born in Washington County, Virginia.  Also, a family tree, probably printed after 1932 and inserted into an 1890 bible commentary owned by Anderson Todd’s great-grandson Armstrong Todd says that Anderson was born in Lodi which lies in Washington County, Virginia.  That family tree stated that William and Elizabeth Todd were Anderson’s parents.  This tradition of a father named William also appeared in an 1876 death record for Henry Todd in Pulaski County which stated that William and Elizabeth Todd were the parents.[7]

Because of this link of the Pulaski County Todds to Washington County, we would expect to find a William Todd in the Washington Co tax lists between 1794 and 1801; but we find no William Todd in the tax lists of Washington County Virginia nor those of neighboring, Russell, Wythe or Greenbrier County either.    The only William Todd we find in Southwest Virginia at that time is is a William Todd in Montgomery County VA in 1787, 1788, and 1789 and then he disappears.[8]   If the disappearance reflects his death, then he could not be the father of the Todd boys born in Virginia in the 1790s.  There is a Mary Todd who died intestate in Montgomery Co in 1792, but the court records for her don’t mention any other Todds and don’t confirm her as widow of  the William of the tax lists of a few years earlier.   It is hard to imagine how there could such a strong tradition of a Washington County origin in there was no substance to it; but we are left without locating the William Todd asserted to be the father of the Pulaski Co Todds.

This author’s current theory (which is just a guess) is that William H Todd b 1826  the son of Anderson Todd was influenced in his understanding of the family origins by a Todd who was born in Washington County, namely, Robert Todd b 1790/1796 in Washington County who settled in Pulaski County in 1843.    William was involved with the estate of his uncle Henry Todd and so could have been the source of the 1867 death record for Henry indicating parentage as William and Elizabeth.   The traditions about Anderson Todd reported by his son William H Todd seem suspiciously to resemble the origins of Robert Todd.   This Robert Todd was born in Washington County, Robert’s mother died in Washington County prior to 1810 just like the family bible asserts that Anderson Todd’s mother died in 1809 in Washington County.   The family bible even lists Robert as a brother, but DNA shows that he was not a brother, though he is likely close kin, possibly even a first cousin.[9]

Robert is assumed to be the brother of John Todd Jr and both are assumed to be the sons of John Todd Sr that appear in John Todd’s 1810 census record in Washington Co.   DNA from a descendant of Robert Todd b 1790/1796 is an exact match with the DNA from a descendant of John Todd Jr who settled in Orange Co IN by 1820 and in Greene Co IN by 1822, suggesting close kinship (possibly brothers).   The age (born 1780-1790) and arrival (prior to 1820) of this John Todd in Indiana fits with the estimated age (b 1782) and departure era (1810) of John Todd Jr of Washington Co, VA.

So though we believe we can link Robert Todd b 1790/1796 to Washington County, we can not find corroborating evidence in the Virginia records for a William Todd in Washington County who could be the father of the Pulaski County Todds.   We suspect that William Todd was indeed the father of the Pulaski County Todds but that he was a younger brother to John Todd Sr of Washington Co, not to John Todd Jr.   We further theorize that this William either lived in Indiana or North Carolina and that, after William’s death, his family came to Pulaski Co from one of those places.

More research is needed in Pulaski County, KY, in North Carolina and in Indiana.

            Early Documented Migrations

About 1810, two branches of the family seem to have migrated away from Washington County:

·         Just after 1810, John Todd Sr , John Todd Jr. b 1782, a younger son b 1794-1800 (who we believe to be Robert Todd who later came to Pulaski County) and 3 daughters left Washington County.   This John Todd was a widower by 1810.  We believe that he and his family came to Indiana because John Todd Jr who settled in Greene County IN by 1822 had a son born in Indiana in 1811.  Perhaps John Todd Sr and the whole family traveled with his son and died in Indiana.  The DNA from the Greene Co Indiana John Todd matches the Robert Todd born in Virginia who was in Indiana by 1821 and in Pulaski Co by 1843.  It is probable that Robert was the younger son of John Todd Sr based on Robert’s being in Indiana around the same time as John Todd Jr and because of the matching DNA.

·         Around 1810, a different branch of the family arrived in Pulaski County Kentucky, presumably from elsewhere in Virginia other than Washington County.  Elizabeth Todd appears on a tax list in 1811 and 1812 and is assumed to be the grandmother of the four boys who grew up there.[10]  This family includes William born abt 1792, Anderson born about 1797, Thomas b 1798-99 and Henry born about 1801.   William appears on the 1813 tax list for Pulaski County; Anderson in 1815; Thomas in 1821 and Henry in 1822.   An Elizabeth Todd 1750-1847 is buried in the Woodstock Cemetery and family tradition in a family bible says she was the grandmother of Anderson Todd.   The death record for Henry Todd b 1801 in 1876 indicates his parents were William and Elizabeth Todd[11]; the family Bible in the line of Anderson Todd b 1797 gives the same names and identifies Elizabeth Anderson Todd (1750-1847) as his grandmother.     The parents whoever they were seem to have died, presumably in Virginia, before the grandmother and the four boys arrived in Pulaski County.

Todds Who Remained in Washington County

There was one branch of this family of Todds that remained in Washington County:     James Todd d1801 and his widow Jane/Jean and his three minor sons, Thomas b 1796, Robert b 1799 and Mary b 1801.[12]

Thomas Todd, son of James d 1801, appears in the Washington County tax lists 1818-1832, then while living in Batholomew County Indiana in 1835 sells some of the land inherited from his father.[13]

His brother Robert is probably the second tithe in the tax list entry for Thomas Todd, his elder brother in 1820, then to have gone to Carter County TN by 1829, returning to Washington Co 1833-1838, then moving to Dekalb County Alabama by 1840 and then Johnson Co Missouri by 1860.[14]

Following are more details about the James Todd and the John Todd branches of the Washington Co Todds:

James, bought land on a branch and a main stem of the Middle Fork of the Holston /Holstein River between 1792 and 1801.  He died in 1801, leaving his wife Jane and minor children, Thomas b 1796, Robert b 1798 and Mary b 1801.

  • James’ son Thomas is enumerated with his mother Jane in the 1812 tax list, suggesting a birth in 1796 which  fits with being the minor son of James d1801.  Thomas disappears from the tax lists in 1833 when he migrated to Bartholomew County, Indiana by 1835 (according to a 1835 deed in Washington Co).

The two Todds that seem to be Thomas’ children or adopted children are:  Preston Todd b 1817 Virginia and John H. P. Todd b 1833 Virginia who lived next door to each other in Douglas Co MO in 1860.   Thomas left Virginia after 1833 and was in Bartholomew County IN by 1835.   Preston seems to have come with his adopted father to Indiana and married in Lawrence County in 1836.   The geographic link in 1860 between Preston b 1817 and John b 1833 suggests that they are close relatives.   Thomas may have had a son John H.P Todd b 1833 VA just before he left Virginia.[15]

Preston’s military record says he was born in Russell Co Virginia in 1817.   But the only family in Russell County at that time is that of James G. Todd whose descendant’s DNA does not match that of Preston.   So given that Thomas Todd in 1820 census does not indicate a male child, Preston may have been born to an unwed mother in Russell Co, but been taken in as a son of Thomas thereafter.  Preston’s descendants’ DNA has some similarities to the Washington Co Todds but has too many mutations to be kin.

  • Robert Todd appears to be the second tithe in the 1816 Washington Co VA tax list with his mother, hence he was probably born about 1799/1800.   He may be the second male living with Thomas in the 1820 census and enumerated on the 1820 tax list with Thomas.  He later seems to have returned to Washington Co because he appears in the tax lists 1833-1838, but not in the other years of 1830s.   This fits with a Robert Todd b 1798 Virginia who appears in NE Tennessee in Carter Co in 1830 and then in Dekalb County Alabama in 1840 and 1850 and then in Jackson, Johnson Co MO in 1860.  The 1850 census shows children born in TN in 1832, VA in 1834 and Alabama in 1839 which fits for a Robert Todd returning to Washington Co 1833-38.

  • Mary Todd sister of Robert and Thomas, born 1801 reportedly married Peleg Cole 6 Nov 1821 in Washington Co and had children with him before her death and his second marriage to Martha Ketchum in 1832.

The Pulaski County Todds

            Settlement and Residence

The Todds who first settled in Pulaski County were Elizabeth Todd and her four young grandchildren aged 10 to 19.   They settled on Buck Creek.  In 1811 and 1812, Elizabeth Todd was taxed for 240 acres that had been surveyed for John Yates way back in 1798.  Possession of this land seems to have passed on to William and Anderson Todd as they were taxed for land on Buck Creek in 1816 and 1817.  But in 1818, Conrad Starnes managed to get Yates’ land resurveyed and conveyed to him.   In the 1820s, William and Thomas sought other lands a few miles west:  William on Clifty  Creek a tributary of Fishing Creek and on Pitman’s Creek; and Thomas on Pitman’s Creek.  Anderson obtained land on Buck Creek.

William moved to Rockcastle Co in 1830 and settled on Brush Creek where he died 1842-1846.[16] Thomas followed William to Rockcastle County a few years later, settling on Copper Creek and then the Dix River, then reportedly moved to Sangamon County, Illinois around 1851 where he died in 1866.   Henry and Anderson remained on Buck Creek their whole lives.

Lives of the Pulaski County Todds

William, the oldest of the four, came to Pulaski County when he was an older teenager.  A few years later in 1818 he married Mary Taylor, daughter of John Taylor.  They moved to Rockcastle Co about 1829 and William died there between 1842 and 1846.  His widow Mary remained there briefly after his death but by 1848 she had returned to Pulaski County.  At that time, her son Henry was living on Clifty Creek as were John H Todd and Cartwright Todd who we believe may well also be her sons.[17]  In 1850 Mary was living with her youngest children next door to her son Henry; in 1870, she was living with her daughter Pauline and in 1880, she was living with her daughter Arthula.  The children were:

·         Henry b 1820 md Jennie Owens (prob in Rockcastle County)[18],

·         Harvey? John H?[19]

·         William Anderson b 1834 md Eliza Stokes 1856

·         Pauline b 1836 md (1) James Brown (2) George Delaney

·         Arthula Jane b 1839 md 1853 Ezekiel Hamm

Though there is no conclusive proof that Cartwright Todd and his sister Mary Todd were children of William and Mary Taylor Todd, there is a preponderance of circumstantial evidence that suggests that they were their children.[20]

·         Cartwright b 1824/25 md Susan Reynolds (prob in Rockcastle County),

·         Mary Todd b 1832 md Oct 23 1849 to Johnson Hamm in Pulaski County

Anderson Todd (1797-1884), the second boy, had come to Pulaski County just after becoming a teenager.  In 1818, he married Sally McKenzie daughter of David McKenzie.  He bought and sold several pieces of land, including 140 acres on Buck Creek to his younger brother Henry.

Anderson and  Sally’s children were:

·         Mary Polly Todd b. 1819-1823

·         Elizabeth Todd b. 1823

·         Nancy Todd b. 1825

·         William Henry Todd b 1826

·         Rachel Jane Todd b. 1828

·         David Todd b. 1837

Thomas Todd (1799-1866) married Mary Van Hook, daughter of Benjamin Van Hook, in 1822.  He bought land on Pitman’s Creek from his brother William in 1830, but seems to have sold this land by 1833 and possibly followed his brother to Rockcastle where he settled on Cooper Creek and then the Dix River.   In 1851, he moved to Sangamon Co Illinois and died in Illinois in 1866.  Their children were:

Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Todd b1823:

Elizabeth Todd b. 1825

Liberty Lawrenceberg "Berg" Todd b. 1827

Hannah Todd b. 1832

Andrew Todd b. 1834

Mary Todd b. 1836

Josiah Todd b. 1839

Henry Todd (1801-1876) was only 9 tor 10 years old when he came to Pulaski County.   He was the last to marry, which he did in 1828 to Jane Adams.   In 1830, he bought 140 acres of land on Buck Creek  from his older brother Anderson Todd.  He remained on Buck Creek all his life, dying in 1876 at the age of 75.  For some strange reason, his was recorded in the public records as “Andrew Todd”, but there was no Andrew Todd of that age.  Despite this mistake, we assume that the parents indicated are accurate: namely, William and Elizabeth Todd.  Henry and Jane’s children were:

·         Daughter born 1825-30

·         Anderson Todd 1830

·         Elizabeth Todd b 1833

·         Sarah Jane Todd b 1832

·         William Todd b 1837

·         Henry Todd b 1839

·         John Todd  b1841

·         Cyrenius Todd  b1843

·         James Todd b1845

·         Martha Jane Todd b1847

·         Nancy Todd b1850

·         Thomas Todd b  1853

There were two other Todds that came to Pulaski County years after Elizabeth and the four boys:  one was Joseph Todd who was not related to the family and the other was Robert Todd who was related.

Joseph             Todd came to Pulaski County in 1827 and died shortly thereafter, leaving a widow Charity Todd and several children.   He was probably born in New York as that is where his older brother James G. Todd was born.  Joseph and James came to Russell County Virginia between 1801 and 1804, possibly after a brief sojourn in North Carolina, based on one of James G.’s children Gaspar Todd possibly being the Gaspar Todd born in NC in 1798.  Joseph married Charity Henninger about 1801, probably in Virginia.  His wife’s family lived next door to the Washington Co Todds, so Joseph may have known them even though they were no kin to him (based on DNA evidence).  He and Charity and their young children left Russell County in 1810.  They were in Wayne Co Kentucky 1811 to 1816, in Adair County 1817 to 1822, back in Wayne County 1824 and possible 1825, and then in Pulaski Co in 1827.    After Joseph’s death in 1827/28, Charity remained there, dying between 1840 and 1849.  Their children were:

·         Dau b 1804-1810

·         Eliza Todd b 1809 Virginia md 1827 to Alfred Tartar in Pulaski County

·         Matilda Todd b 1813 md 1849 to Willis Dalton

·         dau b 1810-20

·         dau b 1810-20

·         dau b 1810-20  (Possible: Martha Jane Todd b 1819 md 1837 Isaac Newton ROGERS)

·         Joseph Green Todd b 1821 KY

·         Henry Harrison Todd b. abt. 1825

Note: Cartwright Todd and his sister Mary Todd have been claimed by some family historians to be children of Joseph and Charity Todd.   However, the preponderance of recent research strongly suggests that Cartwright and Mary were children of William Todd b 1792 and Mary Taylor.

The last Todd to arrive in Pulaski County was Robert Todd.  He was born in Virginia either in 1790 (the date implied by the various census records) or 1796 (the date stated in the family tree).  Based on DNA results, he appears to be the brother of John Todd Jr and hence the son of John Todd.[21]  He was born and spent his early childhood in Washington County, Virginia and presumably left there in or just after 1810 and came to Indiana.  He spent most of the prime of his life in Indiana, where he married an Indiana woman  named Nancy just prior to 1820,  where his son Elijah was born in 1820-1822 and where his other 4 sons and 3 daughters were born.  By 1830, he was in Morgan County Indiana where he got a land grant in 1832.  In 1836, he was in Hancock Co Indiana when he sold his Morgan Co land.  By 1840, he was in Whitley Co Kentucky.  He spent 6 years in Pulaski County 1843 to 1847, and then returned to Whitley Co where he worked at slay making , living with a young man named William Haley and his wife Lucinda.  By 1860, he had returned to Pulaski County and was living with Jane Claunch, the married daughter of his son Silas.

Robert and Nancy’s children were:

Son b 1815-20

Elijah b 1820-22

Silas b 1822-1824

Dau b 1825-30

Dau b 1825-30

Dau b 1830-35

Son b 1835-40

Understanding Robert’s origins and Anderson’s origins are the keys to understanding the origins of the Pulaski County Todds and to understanding what is true and what is not true about the traditions about Todd origins that were passed down in the Anderson Todd family.

For many years,  it has been apparent that there was a contradiction in the family tradition and the public records, but it was not clear how to resolve these contradictions.   Now with the recent research, it has become clear.

The two biggest contradiction were:

1.      that the family tradition in Anderson’s family was that Anderson was born in Washington County Virginia and that his father was William Todd, but there is no William Todd in the early records of Washington County.

2.      Robert was listed as a brother to Anderson Todd in the family tree in the family’s bible commentary, but Henry, William and Thomas were not mentioned, yet the records in Pulaski County make it seem like Anderson was brother to Henry, William and Thomas.

Something is wrong with the first tradition which states that Anderson was born in Washington County and that his father was William.  What is wrong is that there are no William Todds in the Washington County records.  So either Anderson was not the son of William or Anderson was not born in Washington County.   There is a second piece of evidence that William WAS INDEED the father of Anderson, namely, the death record of his brother Henry Todd in 1876 which also reported William as the father.  So, this suggests that Anderson was not born in Washington County and that we need to look elsewhere in Virginia for his father William.

The only William Todd we have found in SW Virginia is a William Todd in the tax lists of Montgomery County, Virginia in 1787, 1788, and 1789.  There is also a court case in 1790 for an unnamed Todd and in 1799 for what looks like James Todd.  Mary Todd died prior to 6 December 1791 when James Reburn filed bond as administrator.  There is also an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Mary Todd in March 1792 prepared by Joseph Reburn.  Other than that we have no evidence to show a connection between this William Todd and the father of the Pulaski County Todds.

But why is there a tradition in the family that a Todd of Pulaski County was born in Washington County?   The answer is that the Todd born in Washington County was Robert Todd.   The only Todd born in Washington County in the 1790s with children was John Todd and James Todd.  James had a son Robert but that is not the Robert who went to Pulaski Co.  So John is the only one with children unaccounted for is John Todd,  The 1810 census lists him with a younger son born 1794-1800 according to the 1810 census.   We know that John Todd’s older son, John Todd Jr was in Indiana by 1811 when his first son was born.   Since Robert Todd does not appear in the 1810s in Pulaski County tax lists, it seems likely that Robert is the unacounted for son of John Todd Sr and that he went with his family to Indiana in 1811.   Robert’s presence in Indiana when his son Elijah was born about 1820, could be explained by Robert having migrated with his family to Indiana by 1811.

Something is also wrong with the second tradition, namely that Robert was the brother of Anderson but Henry, Thomas and William were not.   This error is explained by the fact that the family tradition about a Washington county birth and about Henry, Thomas and William not being the brothers of Anderson, is true about Robert , but not true about Anderson.  It was Robert who was born in Washington County and it was Robert’s mother who died in Washington County.    These parts of the family tree seem to reflect Robert Todd’s origins, not Andersons.    This is explained by the fact that Robert’s descendants were in close contact with the family of Anderson Todd’s descendants.  They were closely enough connected that a descendant of Robert and a descendant of Anderson married just after 1900.    Somehow someone in the family might have gotten the idea that Robert and Anderson were brothers.  Even as early as 1877, the  marriage record of William H. Todd, Anderson’s son, stated that William’s father was born in Washington County.   Robert’s birthplace must have been known and the assumption of Anderson Todd being Robert’s brother must have given rise to the belief that Anderson was born there as well.

The family tree also confused some details about Cartwright Todd.   The family tree in the bible commentary states that Cartwright was born in 1794, the son of William Todd who died in KY in 1854.  But the only Cartwright Todd we know of was born in 1824, the son of Joseph d 1827/28 and Charity Todd d 1849-49.

            Land Ownership

Though the deeds of Pulaksi County do not show any purchases of land by the Todds until 1825, the tax lists show Todd ownership much earlier.   Elizabeth Todd is listed as being taxed on 240 acres on Buck Creek in 1811 and 1812 – land originally patented by one John Yates.  Anderson Todd is listed as having 100 acres on Buck Creek by 1816; William Todd is listed as having 100 acres on Buck Creek in 1817- land originally patented by one McGuire.  In 1818, the Todds were not taxed on any land.  This was the year that  Conrad Starnes obtained a grant for the land that Elizabeth had been taxed for in 1811 and 1812; so perhaps the absence of taxed land for the Todds reflected the relinquishment of their possession to Conrad Starnes.

William, by 1820, had 200 acres on Fishing Creek – land originally patented by J. Kelly and in 1821 this land seems to have been divided between William and Thomas – each having 100 acres originally patented by J. Kelly.  Thomas Todd is listed has having 100 acres 1821-24 on Fishing, then Flatlick then Pitman, then Buck Creek.     Since the tax lists show who patented the land; perhaps the survey, entry and patent records would reveal how the Todds acquired this land.

In the 1820s and 1830s, the Todds bought and sold land on Pitman’s Creek, Buck Creek and nearby creeks.

Anderson obtained grants on Buck Creek – one  in 1820 for 90 acres and one in 1825 for 50 acres.   He sold these to Henry Todd in 1831.  In 1833, he was very busy with land.  He obtained a grant for 25 acres on Pittmans Creek and bought 25 acres on Buck Creek plus one other parcel, bought 155 acres from Thomas Todd and turned it around the same year to Hazeal Phelps.

William obtained a grant in 1824 for 50 acres on Clifty Creek (probably the Clifty Creek tributary to Buck Creek though there is also a Clifty Creek west of Somerset) which he seems to have sold in 1827; in 1826, he bought 102-1/2 acres on Pitman’s Creek which he sold in 1830 to Thomas Todd; he bought land in 1828.

Thomas Todd bought, in 1825, over 181 acres on Pitman’s Creek; in 1830, he bought 102-1/2 acres on Buck Creek from William Todd;  in 1833, he sold 155 acres on Pitman’s Creek to Anderson Todd.

Not all the deeds have been abstracted as yet and the trail of property transfer from land grantee to the Todds has not been uncovered; so a complete picture of the complex pattern of purchases and sales can not yet be made; but the above discussion gives a flavor of the pattern of purchase and sale and the way the Todds helped each other out in acquiring land.

The Second Generation:

I leave it to someone  else to write up the second generation.

Detailed Essay and Supporting Data

It all began in the early 1790s.  Our nation was new.  George Washington was the first President under the new Constitution.  The frontier was still wild in those days.  The end to the wars against the Indians in the old northwest (NW Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana) was still several years away.  The Indians of Tennessee still dominated most of that state and were still retaliating for depredations in the settlements around Nashville.

Sometime in the early 1790s, a Todd family that included James Todd, John Todd and Patrick Todd migrated from northern Ireland to Washington County in southwest Virginia.

Background

Sometime in the 1790s, a Todd family that included James Todd, John Todd and Patrick Todd, and possibly another brother William migrated from northern Ireland to southwest Virginia.  James Todd bought several hundred acres of land between 1792 and 1801 on the main stem and branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston River in Washington County, VA.  John and Patrick settled there too.     This is beautiful country with well watered valleys alternating with rolling mountains.

Almost twenty years later, in 1811, Elizabeth Todd (1749-1847) settled on Buck Creek in northern Pulaski County, Kentucky.[22]   With her were 4 boys aged 10 to 19, William Todd, Anderson Todd, Thomas Todd and Henry Todd.   And Anderson left a tradition that he had come from Washington County.

Thirty years later, in 1843, Robert Todd b 1790 came from Indiana (where he had been living since before the 1820s) and settled in Pulaski County.  Descendants claimed that he was brother to Anderson Todd. though this author believes he was a cousin.  In either case, he seems to have been close kin.

To complicate matters, there was a Joseph Todd 1780-1827 (unrelated to the other Pulaski Co Todds) who came to Pulaski County and died there in 1827.   He had come with his brother James G.

There were three adult Todds that came into Washington County in the 1790s:  James Todd who bought land in 1792/3, John Todd who appears on the tax lists by 1794, and a Patrick  Todd who died in 1798.

James did not get to enjoy his new home on the frontier very long, because he died in 1801, leaving three minor children, Thomas born about 1796, Robert born about 1798 and Mary born about 1801.

Arriving at the same time was a John Todd, probably the older brother of James.  The 1794 tax list shows John Todd with 2 males over 16, namely, himself and one other.  In 1796, John and James appear on the tax lists individually both with only 1 male over 16.  In 1798,  John and James appear again with James designated as owning 300 acres and in 1800 has having 300 acres and 200 acre, reflecting his 1793 and 1798 land purchases.  Also, in 1798, John Todd Jr appears suggesting that John Sr had a son John who turned 16 that year, hence born 1782.   This suggests that John Sr was the older brother, born in the late 1750s or early 1760s, rather than the father of James.

There is one other adult Todd in the pre-1800 records of Washington County who may be kin to James and John.    A Patrick Todd who died in 1798 (therefore born prior to 1777) leaving no will though James Todd is mentioned in the estate record.   One possible interpretation of these meager records is that Patrick was a brother to James and John.  It is tempting to assume that William, Thomas and Anderson were sons of Patrick d 1798, but there is no probate record indicating that Patrick had children and no tax lists indicating Patrick’s being a separate householder in the 1790s.

We have looked in vain for evidence of William Todd in Washington County as progenitor of the Pulaski County Todds.  We have been looking for William in Washington County because (1) Anderson Todd’s son on his 1877 Pulaski County marriage record said his father was born in Washington County, Virginia and because (2) a printed family tree in a bible commentary owned by Armstrong Todd (great-grandson of Anderson Todd) says that Anderson was born in Lodi which lies in Washington County, Virginia.  Both the family tree and a 1876 death record for one of the Pulaski County Todds states that William and Elizabeth Todd were the parents.   Because of this link of the Pulaski County Todds to Washington County and the birth years of the four Todd boys, we would expect to find a William Todd in the Washington Co tax lists between 1794 and 1801; but we find no William Todd in the tax lists of Washington County Virginia (nor those of neighboring Russell, Wythe County or Greenbrier either) though there is a William Todd in Montgomery County Va in 1787-1789.[23]   There is no evidence that he continued to be in Montgomery Co after 1789; the estate records for Mary Todd in 1791 and 1792 do not mention any other Todds.

There are also a number of Todds who appear in the Washington County tax records in the 1790s and early 1800s who probably were born in the 1780s, assuming they were not immigrants when they appeared but rather had turned 16 when they appeared .   Birth in the 1780s is based on the assumption that they appeared in the tax lists when they turned 16.  We assume these were the sons of John Todd Sr, namely, John Jr born 1782, Josiah born 1784, and Thomas born 1785.  The 1810 census for John Todd indicates that by 1810 he only had two sons:  a son over 16 corresponding to John Todd Jr in the tax lists and an unidentified son under 16 (age 10-16).   Based on the fact that the Pulaski County Todd family traditions that seem to be an amalgam of the family origins of Robert Todd and Anderson Todd, it seems likely that this unidentified son was the Robert Todd who came to Pulaski County in 1843.  John Todd Sr also had 3 daughters born 1784-1800.

There were deaths and disappearances in Washington County prior to 1810 and there were documented migrations between 1810 and 1833.

Deaths and Disappearances

                        Assumed First Generation

  • In 1798, Patrick died intestate leaving an inventory but probate or guardianship record, suggesting he had no children or land.
  • In 1801, James died leaving minor children (Thomas, Robert and Mary).
  • In 1810, John Sr appears in the census and for the last time in the tax lists

Possible and assumed sons of John Sr.

  • In 1798, John Jr appears in the tax lists and disappears in 1810, presumably born about 1782 and possibly having gone to Indiana
  • In 1800, Josiah appears once in the tax lists, possibly born 1784. He is not in the 1810 census.
  • In 1801, Thomas appears in the tax lists and disappears after 1804, presumably born 1785.   He is not in the 1810 census.
  • Son born 1794-1800 listed in the 1810 census, probably Robert Todd who was born in VA, lived for many years in Indiana and came to Pulaski Co KY in 1843..

John Todd Jr seems to have gone to Indiana based on a descendant of John Todd b 1780s of Greene Co IN having matching DNA to the Robert Todd who settled in Pulaski Co in 1843.

It is possible that Josiah and Thomas may have continued to live in the county until 1807 because John Sr and John Jr had another male over 16 taxed with them between 1803 and 1807.  The disappearances after 1807 were probably deaths still being under 21 or migrations out of the county. In any event, by 1810, John Todd only has 2 sons listed in the census, presumably John Jr and a son born 1790-1800.  This author thinks that son might be the Robert Todd born Virginia who settled in Pulaski Co., and therefore would be a cousin to the Pulaski Co Todds, not a brother as asserted by family tradition.

            Early Documented Migrations

·         Just after 1810, John Jr. b 1780s left Washington County for Indiana, settling in Greene Co. IN.  A descendant’s DNA matches that of Robert Todd b 1790 of the Pulaski Co Todds.

·         By 1811, one branch showed up in Pulaski County Kentucky.   in 1811, Elizabeth Todd appears on the tax lists for the first time.   William Todd appears in 1813, Anderson Todd in 1815, Thomas Todd in 18She also appears on other tax lists between 1811 and 1819 and then on the 1820 census with two males under 10, presumably Thomas b 1798 and Henry b 1801, assumed to be her youngest grandsons.

·         IN 1810 Jane Todd appears as head of household in the 1810 census with 7 males.  Some of these males are the right age to be the 4 Todd brothers born 1790 to 1801, and 3 other males.  Jane is a mystery because she does not appear in later records.  Perhaps she is not even the same family or perhaps she is.

Family of James Todd

James Todd’s family is the only one that remained in Washington Co after 1810, namely James widow Jane/Jean Todd and their children:  Thomas, Robert and Mary.

James Todd appears in the tax lists between 1796 and 1801 when he died.  In 1792/3, he bought his first land, 315 acres, on a branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston /Holstein River.   This branch ran along the line that decades later became the boundary between Washington and Smythe County.  It was variously called Carloch’s Creek, Dry Branch and Greaner Branch.  In 1798 and 1801 he bought two parcels totaling 320 acres a few miles away from his Carloch’s Creek land located along the south side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River.  In 1800, he got grants for two smaller parcels adjacent to his first parcel.  In 1801, while living on his Middle Fork land, he sold much of his land.  Then late in 1801 he died, leaving his wife Jane and minor children, Thomas b 1796, Robert b 1798 and Mary b 1801.

James’ son Thomas is enumerated with his mother in the 1812 tax list, suggesting a birth in 1796 which  fits with being the minor son of James d1801.  Thomas disappears from the tax lists in 1833 when he migrated by 1835 to Bartholomew County, Indiana.  While in Indiana, he sold 53 acres of the Middle Fork land to David Surber.

In trying to sort out the history of Thomas and his brother Robert, it has been useful to consider the identify of two Virginia born Todds - Preston Todd b 1817 VA and John Todd b 1833 VA who lived next door to each other in Douglas Co MO in 1860.   The geographic link in 1860 between Preston b 1817 and John b 1833 suggests that they are close relatives.    Thomas left VA by after but he may have had a son John H.P Todd b 1833 VA just before he left Virginia.

  • Mary Todd sister of Robert and Thomas, reportedly married Peleg Cole 6 Nov 1821 in Washington Co and had children with him before her death and his second marriage to Martha Ketchum in 1832.

Family of John Todd

John Todd is assumed to be an older brother based on the birth of his oldest children in the 1780s compared to James’ children born after 1795.   He probably lived on the land of his brother James.   When his older male children turned 16, they would have appeared in the tax lists.  So we assume that his children included:  (John Jr b abt 1782 in 1798 tax list, Josiah b 1784 in 1800 list, and Thomas b 1785 in 1801 -1804 tax list).     In 1807, he sued the heirs of his brother James and secured purchase of 198 acres of land that he immediately turned around and sold to Joseph Snodgrass.  By the 1810 census, he is listed as born prior to 1765 with three daughters born 1784-1800 and two sons: one 16-26 (presumably his son John who appears also in the tax list) and one 10-16 (too young to appear in the tax list).     The other sons are not in the tax lists or the 1810 census, presumably having moved elsewhere or having died as minors.    John and his son John disappeared from the tax lists after 1810.[24]  The family probably went to Indiana at that time.

John (son of John Sr) left the county after 1810 and is probably the John Todd who settled in Orange Co IN by 1820 and in Greene Co IN by 1822.  He had 4 sons born 1810-1820 and three of these married in Greene Co:  Thomas Todd b 1811 Indiana md (1) Margaret Bland 1833 & (2) Caroline Bays 1839; Isaac C Todd md Catherine Julia Steele 1838; Wm Todd md Polly Bland 1837.    A descendant of his had DNA that matched the Robert Todd who came from Indiana to Pulaski Co KY.  Since Robert was thought to be kin to the Pulaski Co Todds who had a tradition of coming from Washington Co, we assume that John was from Washington Co also.

The Pulaski County Todds

The origins of the Todds in Pulaski County is confounded by the burning of some of the early courthouse records in an 1830s fire and by the ambiquity in the records that survived.

The first documented appearance of the Pulaski County Todds is in 1810 when Jane Todd aged 26-45 (born 1765-1784) appeared in the census record with 2 boys aged 0 to 10 (b 1800-1810), 1 boy age 10-16 (born 1794-1800), 3 boys/young men aged 16-26 born 1784-1794, and 1 man age 26-45 (born 1765-1784).  Jane doesn’t appear in later censuses or the tax lists; so either (1) she died or (2) she left the area and wasn’t the same family.

If she were the same family, the census would account for four of the Todd males: William b 1792, Anderson b 1797, Thomas b 1798/9 and Henry b 1801.   We don’t know who the other 3 males were but presumably kin of some sort to Jane.

The next year, we begin to have records that link to the four Pulaski Co Todd boys and to Washngton Co.  The 1811 tax list for Pulaski County shows Elizabeth Todd  as being taxed for 240 acres on Buck Creek.  This land lay on a bend in Buck Creek just to the east of the present day hamlet of Welborn.  This land was not granted to Elizabeth, but was resurveyed in 1818 for Conrad Starnes who had come from Washington County Virginia and was a neighbor to the James Todd and John Todd family in Washington County.  We assume this is Elizabeth Todd 1750-1847 who is buried in the Woodstock Cemetery in northern Pulaski County

The Pulaski County Todds are linked to the Washington County Virginia Todds in other ways.  Censuses after 1850 show that the youngest 3 Todd boys were born in Virginia.  Also, Anderson’s son reported his father was born in Washington County.    And the family tree printed after 1932, probably by Armstrong Todd, said that Anderson was born in Lodi (which lies in Washington County).

The four Todd boys that appeared in the early records are almost certainly brothers to each other, namely, William b abt 1793, Anderson b 1794-97, Thomas b 1798-99 and Henry b 1801.  They sold land to each other, were contemporaries and the latter three are listed in the later censuses as born in Virginia.

The other Todds who came to PulaskiCounty seem to be either from another branch of the family or not related.

The Robert Todd who settled in Pulaski Co in 1843 is undoubtedly kin to the Pulaski County Todds, but this author believes he was a cousin not a brother.  He was in Indiana prior to 1821, came to Whitley County just east of Pulaski County between  1836 and 1840 and was in Pulaski Co 1843-1847.    The census records indicate various birth years for Robert, but the synthesis of the dates yields a 1790 birth, but we need to be open to a slightly later birth year.  A descendant of Robert b 1790/1796 and a descendant of Anderson married each other and their son Ernest Todd b 1917 said they were third cousins, implying brotherhood.  However, there is no record of Robert in Pulaski County in the 1810s when he would have been over 21 (1811 if born 1790, 1815 if born 1794).  There is no record of him in the Washington Co tax lists, but if he were born 1794 he would not have turned 16 until 1810.  If he were born 1794-1800, he could have been the son of John of that age in the 1810 census.  Given the fact that John Jr went to Indiana by 1811 and that Robert was in Indiana prior to 1821, it seems most likely that Robert was brother of John and hence the younger brother in the 1790 census.  This would explain how the family tree in the Anderson Todd line reported a birth in Washington County, that is, the family tree was a mixing up of the family origins of Robert’s family and Anderson’s family.   Research in Indiana is needed to find the will or probate record for John Todd Sr.

·         Henry Harrison Todd b. abt. 1825

The Richard Todd who appears in the 1811 tax list but not thereafter is a mystery.  There is not enough information about him to determine if he was related to the Pulaksi Co Todds or not.  It is tempting to think he might have been the Richard Todd b 1789, nephew to Thomas Todd b 1765 who came to live with his uncle after his father died in 1795.  Thomas Todd owned land in Pulaski County in the years before and after the year that Richard was in the tax list for Pulaski County.

            Land Ownership

Though the deeds of Pulaksi County do not show any purchases of land by the Todds until 1825, the tax lists show Todd ownership or possession much earlier.   Elizabeth Todd is listed as having 240 acres in 1811 and 1812 – land originally patented by one John Yates.  Anderson Todd is listed as having 100 acres on Buck Creek in 1816; William Todd is listed as having 100 acres on Buck Creek in 1817- land originally patented by one McGuire.   In 1818, none of them are shown with land.  Perhaps this is because the land they possessed had been bought by Conrad Starnes.

William obtained a grant in 1824 for 50 acres on Clifty Creek (probably the Clifty Creek tributary to Buck Creek though there is also a Clifty Creek tributary to Fishing Creek west of Somerset) which he seems to have sold in 1827; in 1826, he bought 102-1/2 acres on Pitman’s Creek which he sold in 1830 to Thomas Todd; he bought land in 1828.

Lives of the Pulaski County Todds

A Richard Todd reportedly appears in the 1811 tax list and has been cited as a possible son, but no other evidence for this has been found.  Since this Richard would be 21 when he first appeared,  he would be born 1790.  Perhaps this was Richard Todd b 1789 Virginia, who came with his mother in 1795 to live with his uncle, Thomas Todd, the Supreme Court Justice, who owned land in Pulaski Co in the 1810s.

William, the oldest of the four, came to Pulaski County when he was an older teenager.  William Todd first appears in the tax lists of 1813 implying his birth in 1792.  A few years later in 1818 he married Mary Taylor, daughter of John Taylor).  The tax lists show him with 100 acres of land on Buck Creek in 1817 though the land grants don’t show any acquisition until 1824 and the deed indexes don’t record any purchases by him until 1826 and 1828, the later being 102-1/2 acres on Pitman’s Creek and the land grants.   By 1829, he had moved to Rockcastle County and in 1830 he sold the 102-1/2 acres to Thomas Todd, his assumed brother.    They moved in Rockcastle Co about 1829 .  He has 5 sons and a daughter in the 1830 Rockcastle Census: 3 M born 1825-30, 1 M born 1825-25, 1 M b 1815-20 and 1 F b 1820-30.  This is consistent with the 1820 Pulaski County census which has him with 1 son 1815-1820.   William died there between 1842 and 1846.  His widow Mary remained there briefly after his death but by 1848 she had returned to Pulaski County where three men, Henry, John H and Cartwright Todd all appear together for the first time in Pulaski County on Clifty Creek.  Henry is definitely her son, John H (possibly Harvey) is possibly her son, and Cartwright is likely her son based on a preponderance of circumstantial evidence.   In 1850 Mary was living with her youngest children next door to her son Henry; in 1870, she was living with her daughter Pauline and in 1880, she was living with her daughter Arthula.  The children were:

·         Henry b 1820 md Jennie Owens (prob in Rockcastle County),

·         Harvey?  John H?

·         William Anderson b 1834 md Eliza Stokes 1856

·         Pauline b 1836 md (1) James Brown (2) George Delaney

·         Arthula Jane b 1839 md 1853 Ezekiel Hamm

Though there is no conclusive proof that Cartwright Todd and his sister Mary Todd were children of William and Mary Taylor Todd, there is a preponderance of circumstantial evidence that suggests that they were their children.[25]

·         Cartwright b 1824/25 md Susan Reynolds (prob in Rockcastle County),

·         Mary Todd b 1832 md Oct 23 1849 to Johnson Hamm in Pulaski County

Anderson Todd b 1794-1797, the second Todd boy, first appears in the tax list in 1815 implying a birth in 1794 though he is later said to have been born in 1797.  He married in 1818 to Sarah McKenzie.  He appears in the 1816 tax list owning 100 acres on Buck Creek though his first land recorded acquisition was an 1820 grant on Buck Creek and his first deed purchases we find were in 1825.  He sold land on Buck Creek to his assumed brother Henry Todd in 1831. In 1835, he bought 25 acres on Buck Creek, adjacent to his brother Thomas’ father in law Benjamin Van Hook.  There are many deed records for Anderson that we haven’t yet abstracted.  He died in 1884.

Anderson and  Sally’s children were:

·         Mary Polly Todd b. 1819-1823

·         Elizabeth Todd b. 1823

·         Nancy Todd b. 1825

·         William Henry Todd b 1826

·         Rachel Jane Todd b. 1828

·         David Todd b. 1837

Thomas Todd first appears in the tax list in 1821, implying a birth in 1800, which is consistent with later census records indicating a birth in 1798/99.  He married 1822 to Mary Van Hook, daughter of Benjamin Van Hook.  He appears on the tax lists in 1821 – 1824 as owning 100 acres on Fishing Creek, then Flatlick Creek, then Pitman Creek, then Buck Creek..  He bought 181 acres on Pitman’s Creek in 1825 from Job Gastineau who had come from Washington County VA as well.  In 1830, he bought 102-1/2 acres on Pitman’s Creek from this brother William. He was not in Pulaski in the 1840s.  In 1833, he sold his land and moved shortly thereafter to Rockcastle County settling on Copper Creek and then Dix River.  In 1851, he moved to Sangamon Co Illinois where he reportedly died in 1866.

Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Todd b1823:

Elizabeth Todd b. 1825

Liberty Lawrenceberg "Berg" Todd b. 1827

Hannah Todd b. 1832

Andrew Todd b. 1834

Mary Todd b. 1836

Josiah Todd b. 1839

Henry Todd (1801-1876) was only 9 tor 10 years old when he came to Pulaski County.   Henry Todd first appears in the tax list in 1822, implying a birth in 1801, consistent with later census records.  He was the last to marry which he did in 1828 to Jane Adams.  In the 1825 to 1829, he is listed as owning between 20 and 90 acres on Buck Creek.  In 1830, he bought 140 acres on Buck Creek from his brother Anderson Todd.  He has an estate record in March 1876, suggesting this was the year of his death.  It is strange that an Andrew Todd is recorded in the death records in Feb 1876 aged 75 (but can not be found in the census records) but Henry who died by March 1876 is not recorded in the death records.  Despite this mistake, we assume that his parents indicated are accurate: namely, William and Elizabeth Todd.  Henry and Jane’s children were:

·         Daughter born 1825-30

·         Anderson Todd 1830

·         Elizabeth Todd b 1833

·         Sarah Jane Todd b 1832

·         William Todd b 1837

·         Henry Todd b 1839

·         John Todd  b1841

·         Cyrenius Todd  b1843

·         James Todd b1845

·         Martha Jane Todd b1847

·         Nancy Todd b1850

·         Thomas Todd b  1853

An Andrew Todd d 1876 aged 75 has been cited as a son, but no such person appears in the census records for 1850-60-70 for Pulaski Co, or anywhere in the census records for that matter.   Yet Henry Todd who died by March 1876 aged 75 does not appear in the death records.  Andrew Todd is reported to have appeared on a land grant in 1820 but this land was listed as belonging to Anderson Todd in the 1821 tax list.

Robert Todd b 1790 Virginia did not come to Pulaski County until 1843.   Though he may have been a brother to the earlier arriving Todds (as one of his descendants ascerted), bit he may have been a cousin.   He does not appear in the Washington Co Tax lists but there is a younger son of John Todd in 1810 census who is born 1794-1800, hence approximately the right age to be Robert who came to Pulaski Co.    He does not appear in the tax lists of Washington Co indicating that either he was living there or he was younger than the 1790 birth year deduced from the census records.

In any event, at some point after his Virginia birth, he went to Indiana at least by the time of his son Elijah Todd’s birth 1820-22. By 1830, he is in Morgan Co IN and he has 3 sons: one born 1815-20 and 2 born 1820-25 – the latter being Elijah b 1820-22 and Silas b 1822-24.  He bought land in Morgan Co in 1832 and sold it with his wife Nancy Todd in 1836 while living in Hancock Co IN.  By 1840, he is in Whitley Co. KY just east of Pulaski Co, living with his several children and wife.  His wife probably died in the 1840s.  Robert’s son Silas Todd married in 1843 in Pulaski County, sold land there in 1849 and was in adjacent Lincoln Co in 1850.

Robert spent 6 years in Pulaski County 1843 to 1847, and then returned to Whitley Co where he worked at slay making , living with a young man named William Haley and his wife Lucinda.  By 1860, he had returned to Pulaski County and was living with Jane Claunch, the married daughter of his son Silas.

Robert and Nancy’s children were:

Son b 1815-20

Elijah b 1820-22

Silas b 1822-1824

Dau b 1825-30

Dau b 1825-30

Dau b 1830-35

Son b 1835-40

Joseph Todd who married Charity Henninger (probably of Washington Co Virginia) first appears in the tax lists in 1827, but is followed in 1828 by Charity Todd, his widow.  This suggests that Joseph died in 1827.  Charity appears in the 1830 and 1840 census in Pulaski County.  She is thought to be the Charity Todd that bought the family Bible of William Todd d 1831 substantiating a family link between Joseph and this William.    However, DNA shows that Joseph was not related to the other Pulaski Co Todds, but rather to the Russell Co VA Todds.  He is probably the Joseph Todd in the Russell Co VA tax records 1801-1810 (b pr to 1784).   More research on the Henninger’s and Joseph Todd is needed.   (Note that there is a Henninger/Henegar family in Washington Co Va in 1810 – one branch of which came to Wayne Co KY.)

The Father of the Pulaski Co Todds

The father of the four Todd boys has been stated in a printed family tree in a family bible and in an 1876 death record for one of the Todd boys to be William Todd.  There also was a family tradition that Anderson Todd, one of the children of this William, had been born in Washington Co Virginia.   However, there is no William Todd in the records of Washington Co Virginia; so we assume that William was living elsewhere in Virginia but was related to the Washington Co Todds.

The evidence that William was father is:

 (1) the death record of an Andrew Todd aged 75 in 1876 Pulaski County stated that his parents were William and Elizabeth Todd (this Andrew is assumed to be a clerical error to Henry Todd who died at that time and at that age) and

(2) a printed family tree (possibly printed in 1832) in the 1890 bible commentary of Reuben Todd b 1852 reportedly stated that William and Elizabeth were parents of one of the Anderson Todd branch of the Pulaski County Todds.

We suspect that William Todd was indeed the father of the Todd boys but since there are no records for William Todd in Washington county and since three of the Todd boys were born in Virginia according to later census records, we suspect that William Todd lived elsewhere in Virginia other than Washington Co.

There is a William Todd in the Montgomery Co tax lists in 1787, 1788, and 1789 .  There was a court case in 1790 by an unnamed Todd and a case in 1799 which seems to be for James Todd.  There is a Mary Todd for whom James Reburn and John Barnett filed a bond and James Reburn was appointed administrator on 6 Dec 1791 and for whom an inventory of her estate was made in 1792.  All of this suggests that this William was of the age and the location to have been the father of the Pulaski County Todds, but insufficient evidence exists to consider this anything more than a possibility.

We investigated to see if there was any geographic connection between this William Todd of Montgomery Co, the William Todd b 1792 who married Mary Taylor in 1818 in Pulaski Co, and Mary’s father John Taylor 1764-1845 who married Catherine Wilson in 1791 in Montgomery Co.   However, this John Taylor lived on Craigs Creek in Botetourt County – many miles from where William Todd of Montgomery Co lived - somewhere  in the area where the South Fork of the Holston, Cripple Creek and Elk Creek are nearest, along the border of Grayson, Wythe and Smyth County.

Further research is needed, especially in Pulaski County court records and in Washington County, VA.

The Mother of the Pulaski County Todds

The tax list records 1811-1819 and the 1820 census suggest that Elizabeth Todd b prior to 1775 was the matriarch the Pulaski County Todds, though she may have been the grandmother.   We can not explain why Jane Todd b 1765-1784 is listed as head of household in 1810 with 6 children of age corresponding to some of the Todd brothers born 1790 to 1801.

The first documentary evidence consists of a death record for an Andrew Todd who died in Pulaski County in 1876 aged 75, hence born 1801, which states that his parents were William and Elizabeth Todd.  However, there is no Andrew Todd in the census records for Pulaski Co or anywhere around that matches the death record; while on the other hand, there is an estate record that Henry Todd died in 1876 aged 75.   If the informant was wrong about the first name of the decedent, one can not put a high degree of trust in the names of the parents.

The second documentary evidence is a report by a family historian of a record in a bible given to Reuben Todd b 1852 which states that William and Elizabeth Todd were parents of the Pulaski Co Todds.    The family bible was printed in 1890 and there is a printing press version of a family tree in it.   Most of the dates are just years of birth and death except for the exact birthdates of Reuben Todd b 1852 and his children.

The bible was not a normal family bible in the sense of a bible that was passed down through the generations with exact dates of birth, marriage and death recorded as they occurred.   However, we know the following:

  1. The bible was copyrighted in 1890; so the dates of the children of Reuben prior to 1890 must have been entered some years after they occurred.
  2. The only dates entered as exact dates with month, day and year were those or Reuben Todd and his six children.   Even Reuben’s wife’s birth was entered as a year rather than exact date.
  3. The bible includes the 1920 death of Reuben Todd and the 1932 death of Reuben’s wife Martha Bryant Todd.   So if this were a printed version of the family three, then it must have been printed after 1932 by the next generation, probably Armstrong Todd who was the informant on his father’s 1920 death certificate and who inherited the family bible.
  4. The bible reflects an oral tradition of a Washington County Virginia origin.  This tradition was at least as old as 1877 because the second marriage of William Henry Todd 1826-1917 mentioned that William’s father was born in Washington Co.  The bible reflects the same tradition and is more specific in that it mentions Lodi, Virginia (which lies in Washington County) as the birth place of Anderson Todd in 1798 and the death place of Anderson’s mother Elizabeth in 1809.
  5. The abstract of the family bible states that Howard Todd was born in 1862, but the public birth records show him as born 1861; the abstract does not list the birth of David W. Todd in 1857, though the public birth records and the census do list him.
  6. The abstract lists Anderson’s father as being William Todd born 1770 Tamore, Ireland died 1854 Kentucky, but we can find no such William in the 1850 census or the Kentucky death records..
  7. The abstract lists Anderson’s siblings as Cartwright b 1794, Robert b 1796 and Mary b 1801, but does not list William b 1792, Thomas b 1798-9 or Henry b 1801 as siblings.
  8. The only Cartwright Todd we have a record of is the Cartwright Todd b 1825 (likely a son of William Todd d 1792) who lived in Pulaski Co until the 1860s and who went to Wayne Co Illinois by 1870.

I conclude that the family tree was probably compiled by Armstrong Todd based on an oral family tradition and a listing of the exact births of he and his siblings and his father.   I think the compilation was made after the death of William H Todd b 1826 d 1917 and Reuben Todd b 1852 d 1920 since it doesn’t seem likely if William was alive that the compiler would have asserted the death of Anderson’s father in 1854 in Kentucky and it doesn’t seem likely that Reuben would have omitted the birth of his brother David in 1857.  However, the oral tradition may have forgotten David b 1857 since he died in 1870 and the 1854 date of death for Anderson’s father would have seemed plausible to Armstrong.  Similarly, the oral tradition may have remembered Cartwright but not the birth year details since  Cartwright had left Pulaski Co by 1870 to go to Illinois.

As such, the family tree may be a mixture of accurate and inaccurate information.  It is not possible to sort out which is accurate and which is not.  It would be good though to inspect the actual handwriting of the original record to help discern when the family tree was compiled and how many different people were involved in its compilation.

With that said, the evidence seems still strong that the Elizabeth Todd who died in 1847 aged 97 and was buried in Woodstock, was indeed the grandmother of Anderson and that she was living with Anderson in the 1830 census.

For many years,  it has been apparent that there was a contradiction in the family tradition and the public records, but it was not clear how to resolve these contradictions.   Now with the recent research, it has become clear.

The two biggest contradiction were:

3.      that the family tradition in Anderson’s family was that Anderson was born in Washington County Virginia and that his father was William Todd, but there is no William Todd in the early records of Washington County.

4.      Robert was listed as a brother to Anderson Todd, but Henry, William and Thomas were not, yet the records in Pulaski County make it seem like Anderson was brother to Henry, William and Thomas.

But why is there a tradition in the family that a Todd of Pulaski County was born in Washington County?   The answer is that the Todd born in Washington County was Robert Todd.   The only Todd born in Washington County who survived children and is unaccounted for is John Todd’s younger son born 1794-1800 according to the 1810 census.   We know that John Todd’s older son, John Todd Jr was in Indiana by 1811 when John Todd Jrs’s first son was born.

This error is explained by the fact that the family tradition about a Washington county birth and about Henry, Thomas and William not being the brothers of Anderson, is is true about Robert , but not true about Anderson. Somehow someone in the family got the idea that Robert and Anderson were brothers.

It stated that Cartwright was born in 1794 and was the son of William Todd 1770-1854.   But the only Cartwright Todd we know of was born in 1824, though the prepondance of evidence suggests that he was the son of William Todd b 1792.   Hence the parentage is correct, but it appears to be a mixup of the generations.   This supports the theory that the family bible is a grafting of the traditions of Robert Todd born 1790/1796 onto the traditions of the Pulaski County Todd family and mixing up the relationship with Cartwright Todd.

 Next Steps:

  1. Find the Bible Record that reportedly mentions William Todd being the father of the Todds b 1790s
  2. Research in Pulaski Co especially the court records

My picture of the Todds is that three brothers Patrick, James and John came into Washington Co in the 1790s.  Patrick died 1798, James died 1801,  John had several children born in the 1780s before coming to Washington Co.  including John Jr (appears in tax lists 1797/1798 to 1810, Josiah who appears in the tax lists only in 1800, Thomas in the tax lists 1801-1804 and a younger son born 1794-1800 according to the 1810 census for John Todd and 3 daughters b 1784-1800.

I am now leaning towards assuming that John Todd and his 3 daughters and two surviving sons:  John Jr born about 1782 who appears in the tax lists and the younger son born 1794-1800 listed in the 1810 census all went to Indiana by 1811.   This is based on the John Todd b 1780s of Greene Co IN having a son born 1811 in Indiana.   I believe the second son of John Todd Sr. was Robert Todd and that he is the Todd who was in Indiana by 1821 and came to Whitley Co between 1836 and 1840 and to Pulaski Co KY in 1843 and was associated with the Todds who arrived there in 1811: William b 1792, Anderson b 1797, Thomas b 1798 and Henry b 1801.  I think that these latter children are cousins to John Jr and Robert, not brothers.  I also believe that the family tradition in the Pulaski Co Todds that they came from Washington Co was somehow something they learned from Robert (who according to my theory may was born in Washington Co) and from the other Pulaski Co neighbors whose ancestors had come from Washington Co also.  This would explain why we find no record of the four children in the tax lists of Washington Co though at least William b 1792 would have been old enough to be in the tax lists at age 16, nor any record of the father William Todd in Washington Co.

Richard

As you know, the family tradition in Anderson’s Todd family was that the family came from Washington Co VA.  So we’ve been digging in the Washington Co VA records.  Diana Powell who is interested in all families in Washington Co especially those connected to her Edmiston ancestors has spent several hours copying records for us while she was in Salt Lake City last week.  Here are the highlights:

  1. In 1793, James Todd bought from John and Lettice Pickesn 315 acres on a branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston River.  (This branch was later called Carlock’s Creek and later still Dry Branch).  The land was adjacent to Jacob Henninger, Conrad Carlock, John Snodgrass, and John Jamison. If you look at the colored map I sent you you will see the Conrad Carlock and Conrad Henninger land.  I will soon revise the map to include this parcel.
  2. IN 1798, James Todd bought a sizeable tract from Welcom Martin on the south side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River, adjacent to John Kelly and James Robinson.
  3. IN 1801, James and his wife Jean sold a little 14.5 acre tract on the main stem of the Middle Fork of the Holston River where he lived to one Mitchell Robinson.
  4. IN 1801, James and his wife Jean sold to Adam Starnes the 70 acre parcel he had obtained by grant in 1800.  Remember that Adam Starnes was the father of Conrad Starnes who in 1818 bought the land on buck Creek in Pulaski County that Elizabeth Todd had lived on in 1811, 1812.
  5. In 1810, James and his wife Jean sold to Reuben Debord the 28 acre parcel he had obtained by grant in 1800.  Reuben DeBord and Adam Starnes both married into the Hubble family.  The Debords, Starnes, Hubbles all had branches that moved to Pulaski County.
  6. IN 1801, James and his wife Jean mortgaged 100 acres of his land on the south side of the main stem of the Middle Fork of the Holston River.
  7. In 1807, 6 years after James Todd died in 1810, John Todd (assumed to be his brother) entered a suit against James’ widow Jane and the guardian of the heirs of James Todd.  In 1807, the court declared that Jane should sell land to John Todd. 198 acres up on Carlocks Creek.  John turned around and sold the land to Joseph Snodgrass for 350 pounds Virginia money.

There certainly seem to be a lot of people associated with Pulaski Co in these records.  I note that a John Kelly was on the census record in 1810 inPulaski next to the mysterious Jane Todd.

Diane also abstracted the inventory for Patrick Todd:

Todd Probate (Devisor WB 1-13):

2: 136  (1798)  Patrick Todd appraisal  (34356)

- very short, only a few lines; only names were James Kincannon and Wm Beattie who apparently were the appraisers; no adm or exe ment. ; items incl a still, tubs, brown mare, 5 med handerkerchiffs,  1 old coat and jacket, pair old saddle bags old gun barrel, old old bed and bed clothes.  No sale entry.

I assume the still was a whiskey still so that gives an idea of howPatrick spent some of his time.  Unfortunately no evidence of connection to the other Todds, but I believe him to be a brother to James Todd d 1801 and John Todd his assumed brother.

The Todds, Russells,Dorans, Keys,Kings and Lowrys. All these famiys are kin to the Lowrys but i havent been able to put the pieces together on the Lowry family. At this time i do not know who the parents of Robert Lowry Todd are. Anybody have a clue?

Hi John
The R.L. Todd you refer to is my 4th great grandfather
His name was Robert wifes name was Elizabeth L. unknown
He was born in Va. abt. 1803. she was born in Tn. abt. 1815
He is in the 1840 and 1850 Valley Head, Ala. census at least one of there children was born in Tn. He moved here to Johnson county, Mo. before 1860. living in his household is his son Thomas's wife Susan (Lowary)Todd and her children. Thomas had dissapeared. Family story says he dissapeared when he went to Illinois to join union army.
I doubt this beings he dissapeared before the Civil War.
More than Likly being a southerner he was killed by Kansas
scum during the border war which started in 1853. The Todds Here had some connecton with some Russells some of the Russels ended up in Boonville, Arkansas. and had spent time in Marion Co., Tn.

Synthesis:

William Todd 1795 d 1830/31 md 1818 Mary Taylor (in 1850 Pulaski Co census)

Henry Todd/Tood b 1820 per 1850 Pulaski  (can’t find Henry or James or children (other than Martin) in 1860) md Jane b 1824

            Nancy b 1840

Martin b 1842 (living w Denny family in 1860 into which he married)

            Sarah b 1844

            Elizabeth b 1849

The following are siblings living with Polly Todd next door to Henry. but James b 1839 can not be a sibling of Henry b 1820 and the James b 1824 if James b 1824 is a sibling of Henry.  Strange as it seems, I think that both these James’ reported in the census are typos for Jane – that the older Jane is the wife of Henry and the younger Jane is sister.

William b 1834 md 1856 Eliza Stokes (in 1880 in Owen Co IN)

                                    Mary J. 1858

                                    John Buchanan Todd b 1860

Susan Delaney 16 1864

Sarah C. Delaney 7 1873

George Delaney 5 b 1875

                        Jane b 1839

As strange as it seems, you will note that I changed both James Todd: one born 1824 and one born 1839 to Jane.   There seems to be no James’ in the tax lists or later census that correspond to these census entries, but that is a Jane Todd b 1839 missing from the census and the wife of Henry is missing from his census.

On October 31, 1792, James Todd bought 315 acres of land on a branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston River from John PIckins and Lettice his wife.  Book 1, P 305. per Annals of SW Virginia, by summers.

IN 1798, John Todd was a witness to the will or estate settlement of Robert Thompson. Will Book 2, p 173. (p 1354 of Annals of SW VA.)

In 1800, James  obtained two grants for land on Carlocks Creek, a branch of the Middle Fork of the Holston.  Presumably, these lands were all on Carlocks’ Creek.

Todd Brothers of Pulaski County

The Family Tree:

The following is a family tree compiled by Tim Todd to which I have added notes, additional branches and changes.

*) Richard Todd b. bef. 1790 (was of "age" in 1811, according to tax rolls): This Richard is probably not part of the Pulaski Co Todds.  Perhaps he was the Richard Todd b 1789, who came with his mother after 1795 to live with his uncle Thomas Todd, the supreme court justice, who owned land in Pulaski Co.

* ) ROBERT TODD b. abt. 1790 Va. moved ca. 1818 to Indiana m. Nancy LNU born in Indiana based on mother’s birthplace stated in 1880 census for son Elijah.   Robert Todd was in Morgan Co IN in 1830 census, bought government land in Morgan Co in 1832 and sold it with his wife Nancy in while living in Hancock Co IN in 1836.  He was in Whitely  Co by 1840 and in Pulaski Co 1843-1847 and back in Whitley in 1850 and Pulaski in 1860. living with granddaughter Jane Claunch.  . Though one source says he moved back without any wife, the 1840 census has a woman born 1800-1810 in both the 1830 and the 1840 census.

The DNA indicates that Robert is a brother or close kin to John Todd b 1780-1790 who settled in Indiana by 1811 and by 1822 in Greene Co IN.  The DNA indicates that Robert and John are close kin, but not brothers to Anderson and Thomas Todd of Pulaski County.  Hence, despite family tradition, the writer does not think that Robert is a brother to the Pulaski Co Todds, but rather is a cousin.  See DNA discussion.

Pulaski Co. Ky. age 75 listing parents Wm. & Eliz. Todd. Also helped

with Anderson & Thos. & Henry aquire land on Buck Creek in 1820's

and 1830's. Unknwn children.  Richard McMurtry believes the death record for Andrew was a error and was actually the death record for Henry Todd because Henry died in 1876 aged 75 and there is no Andrew in the census records of the age of the person in the death record.    The 1820s land grant listed for Andrew Todd was actually for Anderson Todd.

THE JOSEPH & CHARITY TODD FAMILY

There is also mention of Joseph Todd married Charity Henninger in Pulaski Co KY in 1816 in Washington or Russell Co prior to 1809, the birth year of their daughter Eliza.  DNA shows that Joseph was related to the James G. Todd who came to Russell Co VA in 1802. Joseph is in the tax lists of Russell Co 1801-1810.

Joseph seems to have come to Adair Co Ky prior to 1820 and is in the tax lists 1820-1823.  He and Charity have a son born 1802-1804 and 6 daughters: 2 born 1804-1810 and 4 born 1810-1820.  Joseph appears in the 1827 Pulaski Co KY tax list, but Charity appears in 1828 tax list and in the 1830 census, suggesting Joseph had died.

Their son shown in the 1820 census may be the William Todd who died in Pulaski Co in 1831 as evidenced by Charity buying William’s bible at his 1831 estate sale.  Their daughter Eliza married in 1827 to Alfred Tarter.   Their daughter Matilda b 1813 married Willis Dalton in 1835.  The other daughter born prior to 1810 may have married before coming to Pulaski County; the other three we don’t know about though they were in Pulaski Co in 1830 census but not the 1840 census.  There were two sons listed in the 1840 census and they were Joseph Green Todd b 1821 and Henry Harrison Todd b 1824.  DNA from a desc of each of them matches each other closely.

There is a Katherine Todd listed in the 1831 estate settlement of William; so presumably she is a daughter born about 1810.

Joseph Todd died by 1830.There may be a connection to the above

family due to the will of William Todd of 1831, from Charity receiving the

Wm. Todd Bible. These Todd's lived around the White Oak area of the

county. Here are there children;

Notes for Matilda H. Todd:

Per Marla Odum: In the original marriage bond, there is a note giving permission for Willis Dalton and "my daughter Matilda Todd" to marry. John Barker signed an oath that Charity signed the note as "her" act or deed. Charity/Charely made a mark "x" and above it says "him mark. just to weigh in here finally on this subject in light of reuben todd bible of 1852, the 1876 pulaski co vital statistics, william todd would be father of a great deal of them, and kin (i beleve) to the joseph todd group of southern pulaski co.... elizabeth anderson todd was the mother of the group (buried @ woodstock 1849) and her son william was married to elizabeth gooch she died 1809..... where william dies and the son william jr or if there was one i dont know, let me say tho... the seven boys kin is my guess, robert. is bro to anderson, and cartwright born 1794 that i recently found out after that i dont know, many of them helped out each other in the land warrants in early pulaski, i digged up 5 or so such records, 1820's to 1830's also they appeared in court with anderson in a trespassing case where thomas was witness to anderson.. dont know much after that

*  *

George and Sarah Todd et al sold land in Pulaski Co in 1853.  Curiously there is a George R. Todd and wife Sarah who in the same year while living in Maury TN are involved with a property transaction in which they are identified as heirs of William Gilmer of Russell Co VA (presumably through Sarah) and Thomas Combs of Washington Co, VA. For property in Little MOccasion Gap where James G. Todd of the Russell Co VA Todds lived.

There is a George Todd b 1818 TN in the Pulaski Co census of 1850?.

In 1850, he is living in Meigs Co TN next door to Andrew Todd b 1796 VA. This is the family from eastern VA that came to Montgomery Co VA and then to Meigs Co TN.

Robert COMBS sold land in Washington Co to James TODD DB10:234 but this looks like 1832 so this is the Russell Co VA Todds.

HI folks,

The deeds and deed indexes from Pulaski Co arrived yesterday.

2.  At some point, it might be useful to study the families that lived near the Todds and that came from Washington Co, VA to Pulaski Co KY about the same time.  For example, Job Gastineau lived on the Middle Fork of the HOlston as did the Washington Co Todds and he came to Pulaski Co about the same time as the Todds.  In 1825, Thomas and Polly Todd were involved with a land transaction with Job Gastineau and two daughters of Anderson Todd married Gastineau's: Mary to Isaac Gastineau in 1838 and Elizabeth to Christy Gastineau in 1843.  Curiously, Silas Todd (son of Robert b 1797) sold something to William Gastineau in 1849.

The Surber family also came from Washington Co though I know not where.

3.  The Todds of Pulaski Co began to buy land in the 1820s:

1825 Thomas  181 Ac on Pitmans' Creek

1825  Anderson

1826  William 102.5 Acres on Pitman's Creek

1831 Henry bought from Anderson Todd

No land purchases are recorded for Joseph or Charity Todd.

4.   William and Polly/Mary Todd

Wm and Polly Todd sold land in 1828 and 1830 with the 1830 sale occuring  while Wm lived in Rockcastle County being to Thomas Todd.

Here’s what Tim Todd reports:

3)WILLIAM TODD II b. ca. 1795 Va. m. 25 Jun 1818 to
Polly Taylor (d/o John) they married in PULASKI CO.
Ky. (the families of 682/683 pg.92 1850 PULASKI CO.
cencus may belong here.) Also George W. Todd b. 1818
from Tenn. may belong here who married a "Measel".
Polly Taylor Todd may be Mary Todd of 1850 cencus.
NOTE:  George R. Todd of TN is son of Andrew Leipner Todd of Henrico and ontgomery Co VA and Meigs Co TN.  DNA does not match Washington o/Pulaski Co Todds.
Children of William:

Henry b 1820 md Jane Owens abt 1840

Unknown dau b abt 1825

William Anderson b 1834

Paulina b 1836 md 1854 to James Brown

Arthula b 1839 md 1853 to Ezekiel Hamm

The family of William Anderson Todd

If the families of 682/683 pg.92 of the PULASKI CO.
Cencus belongs to William Todd II then one of his sons
or grandsons may be William Anderson Todd who married
Eliza Ann Stokes in Rockcastle Co. Ky. WILLIAM Anderson
TODD with Eliza possibly moved to Paris, Illinois abt.
1875. "Tradtion" from info from State Archives by Marilyn
Todd Snyder 720 Hiwatha Dr. Elkhart, Indiana 46514 dated
7 June 1979, states "That William and family went first
to Iowa on way to Ill. Have picture of Old lady with Ft.
Dodge
, Iowa
on it." Also mentioned was that Joe Hamm
was a nephew of William's. It said at the funeral of
Eliza's in 1904 at Paris, Illinois that the Hamm family
was there. She also stated she did not know who they
are." I believe finding out who they are from Pulaski
will unravel this mystery of William Todd II and his
descendants. There is a Joseph Hamm b. 1821 who was a
brother to Johnson D. Hamm b. 1828 who married "Polly
Pop Todd" d/o Joseph and Charity Henninger Todd, and
brother to a Ezekiel Hamm Jr. b. 1835 who married
Arthusa Jane Todd 15 Apr.1857, unknwn place, they were
sons of EZEKIAL Hamm b. 1795 PULASKI CO. Ky. who married

Early Todd Land Transactions In Pulaski Co KY

From: Mary Hill <mevhill@burgoyne.com>

Subject: [RIDDLE-L] William Haley & Nancy Riddle

Date: Wed, 23 Sep 1998 20:47:44 -0600

Hi Norene,

Here's some of what I have. I found a deed of William R. Haley and wife

Nancy Haley selling land in Beaver County, OK to Alonzo Palmer 28 Dec 1897,

Book 1, p.634.

Mrs. Dele Haley sold land to Mrs. Maria Crandall 17 Jul 1906, Book 2, p.321.

Found William Haley, age 70 and wife Nancy, age 65, on the Salt River

Township, Knox Co., MO - 1880 Census. Says he was born in KY, his father

was born in Tenn. and his mother was born in KY. Nancy was born in KY, her

father was born in NC, and her mother's birth place is not given.

In their household was William Haley, age 14, grandson. Born KY, father

born MO, mother b. KY.

Lindsey Haley, age 12, grandson, same birth location info.

Jack T. Todd, age 28, son-in-law. Born KY. Father and mother born in VA.

Eliza Todd, age 22, daughter (of William Haley), she and her parents born

in KY.

William Todd, age 3, grandson, born in MO.

Milton Todd, age 8 months, grandson, born in MO.

Found cemetery records in Rockcastle County, KY with lots of Riddles and

Haley's. There was a Robert Riddle 20 May 1813-20 May 1890. Book is

"Rockcastle County, Kentucky Cemetery Records" by Jeanne Snodgrass Bonham

and Patricia Heylmann Hiatt. Like I said, tons of Riddle's and Haley's in

the book. Earliest Haley in the book was Barney B. Haley, born 1755 d. 27

Oct 1851. Lots of others. I think Barney is supposed to be the father of

William Haley, or the grandfather. The book "Greener Pastures: from the

Tidewater to Texas and Beyond" by W. Wayne Rogers, Marietta, Georgia, c1996

(phone: 1-770-977-1758) gives lots of Haley info. Lists William R. Haley b.

29 Apr 1810 KY - 4 Apr 1904, Beaver Co., OK. Married c1835 in KY to Nancy

N. Riddle b. 7 May 1815 in KY, d. 1 Jan 1903, Beaver Co., OK. Quotes

"Haleys Plus" for descendants.

Found a good biographical sketch of William and Nancy Haley's coming to

Beaver County, OK in "A History of Beaver County Pioneer Families", vol. 1,

1970, published by Beaver Co., Hist. Soc., Inc. Mentions James and Mary

Elizabeth Cline and children, Mrs. Cline's parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe Watson

and their children, and Mrs. Watson's parents, WILLIAM AND NANCY HALEY.

Says Mr. Haley rode as a spy in the Civil War in KY, and had a bullet in

his hip from the war. Their son died as a prisoner of war. Says the

Haley's had four daughters, Mrs. Jack Todd, Mrs. Stagner (Alta Tomlins

mother); Dicey Haley; Mrs. Cook (Harve Cook's mother); and Mrs. Watson.

Talks about the trip from Bethany, Missouri in a caravan through the Indian

Territory of OK. Talks about the original homesteads, etc. Lots more.

Submitted by Archie B. Cline and Grace D. Barrett.

In "Rockcastle County, Kentucky and Its People", c1992, there is a

biographical sketch of Barnabas Haley. Says he was born in Lunenburg co.,

VA in about 1753 and died in Rockcastle Co., KY 27 Oct. 1851. He enlisted

in the VA line about 1775 at Charlotte Court House County, fought in NY

around Brandywine, etc. etc. His grandfather was a Wells. He and his wife

Rhoda lived in Henry Co., VA after the Rev. War until about 1792 when they

moved to Grainger Co., TN. William was born there, as was Coleman. Then

they moved to Rockcastle Co., KY. It goes on and on. Lots more.

Hope this helps.

Here’s what arrived yesterday.  I’ve put it in the envelope to send to June Kennedy, Henry’s descendant.

  1. Pulaski County Court: 20 march 1876, Book 12, p 86

This day Jane Todd appeared by Atty and..the Court to gratn her letters of Adminstration in the estate of her late husband Henry Todd decd which is continue until the next Term of the this Court.

  1. Book 12, p 96

ON the third day of April 1876,by the written request of Jane Todd and motion of John Todd and Wiliam H. Coyer who made oath and executed an approved covenant to the Commonwealth of Kentucky with Alfred G. Watson and Daniel ???? their sureiteis letters of administration on the estate of Henry Todd deceased intestate and hereby granted unto said John Todd and William H. Colyer.

Given that the court seemed to meet every month, I would say that Henry probably died in February or March 1876.  Given, that the only  death record recorded for Todds in 1876 in the county death records is Andrew Todd aged 75 (the same age as Henry) and that Henry has no death record and that no Andrew Todd b 1801 exists in the census record indexes for Kentucky or surrounding states, I conclude that the record for Andrew is really for Henry b 1801 and that Andrew does not exist.

The grant to Andrew Todd on Buck Creek turns out to really be a clerical error listing Andrew Todd in the text of the deed, but with references for Anderson Todd in the margins and in the surveys..

Hi folks,

Attached is the results from my paid researcher in Salt Lake City.

It might be good to look at those tax lists for the years prior to and after the 1829-1835 period that we have inspected and recorded above.

  1. Pulaski County

The attached tax lists are fascinating!  Even though the deeds do not show purchases of land by the Todds until 1825, the tax lists show the Todds as being taxed for land before that date:

Anderson Todd as having 100 acres on Buck Creek by 1816 and between 1821 and 1824 he is listed as owning 90 acres though this is identified variously as being on Buck Creek, Pitmans Creek and Sinking Creek.

Similarly,

William Todd is listed as having 100 acres on Buck Creek in 1817, 200 acres on Fishing Creek in 1820, 100 acres on Fishing in 1821,

Thomas Todd is listed has having 100 acres 1821-1824 on Fishing, then Flatlick, then Pitman, then Buck Creek.

Joseph is listed as having 204 acres in 1827, Charity is listed as 100 and 103 acres in 1828, 1829. (White Oak)

Also interesting is that Elizabeth Todd is listed in 1811 and 1812 as having 240 acres on Buck Creek

Even more important is that it lists the name of the person who “entered”, surveyed and patented the land.

In the case of Elizabeth, it was John Yates; in the case of Anderson, it was mostly entered by A. Todd.in the case ot Thomas, it was J Kelly, F. Waters, and Todd, in the case of William, it was McGuire for his 1817 land, J Kelly for this 1820,1821 land.  .

I think the next step here is to write to the Pulaski County Historical Society and ask about what record sources exist to explain the Todds acquisition of land other than by deed.

Another important step might be to look at the tax lists for the 1830s to see who entered the land for which the Todds were taxed.  That might provide a clue as to where to look for the land records that Tim has referred to.

3.

This last effort has cost me $125.

I will send the documents I have acquired to June Kennedy, but will now call it quits.  I’m sorry that I wasn’t able t solve the many puzzles of your family, but happy to have at least gotten the documentary references that are easily available.

Good luck to you all!

HI folks,

I just received the results from my SLC researcher on the Pulaski Co Todd tax list entries.

What is interesting to me is:

  1. In 1841, only Henry and Anderson appear in the tax lists and they continue to appear through 1851..  Their sole appearance in 1841 is partly understandable since William had gone to Rockcastle Co by 1830 and was still there in the 1840 census; Thomas had left the county.  But surprisingly, there is no entry in the tax list for Charity Todd who had appeared in the 1840 census with her two youngest sons.
  2. Robert Todd:

The tax lists tell us something about Robert Todd that we didn’t know before.  We knew he was in Whitley Co in 1840 and 1850, but as the tax lists show, we now know that he was in Pulaski Co 1843-1847.  Presumably, he moved to Pulaski between 1840 and 1843 with his entire family, including Silas and Elijah and probably his wife and younger children, including a son born 1835-1840 and 2 sons born 1830-35 and 3 daughters.  .  This explains how Silas got to be in Pulaski Co when he married in 1843.  Perhaps Robert’s move back to Whitley Co was occasioned by the death of his wife Nancy who appeared in the 1830 and 1840 censuses as a female born 1800-1810.

In 1844, Silas appears on the list, having married in Pulaski Co in 1843.  He appears on the 1847 and 1848 tax lists having land on Buck Creek, presumably the land he obtained by grant and then sold in 1849.

In 1847, Elijah appears on the tax list, having turned 21 in 1845 or 1846.

Mary Todd appears in 1848 and again in 1851 with 100 acres on Buck Creek.  This presumably is the widow of William Todd, reflecting her move back from Rockcastle Co.    Also appearing in 1848 is a third Henry Todd who is landless and presumably is the Henry b 1820 who appears next door to Mary in the 1850 census.  Abstracting the tax lists for Rockcastle County in the 1840s would tell us his death year, confirm his widow’s presence in Rockcastle and show his oldest sons Henry and James coming of age in the 1840s.  Abstracting the 1820s Rockcastle Tax lists would confirm that the William of Rockcastle is the William who left Pulaski around 1828.

The 1840 census for William lists a son b 1810-20 (presumably the Henry b 1820 in the 1850 Pulaski Co census), a son b 1820-25 (presumably the James b 1824 in the 1850 Pulaski Co census) and a son born 1830-35 (presumably William Anderson Todd b 1834 listed as living with Mary in the 1850 Pulaski Co census.

We note that William did not have a son b 1835-1840 corresponding to the James b 1839 living with Mary in the 1850 census, but that Robert did have a son b 1835-1840 in the 1840 census.   It is conceivable that when Robert left Pulaski to return to Whitley, that he left his son to be raised by Mary Todd.  This is just conjecture, but perhaps there are court records to support this.  Surprisingly, we do not find the James of the 1850 census in the 1848 or 1851 tax list.

  1. Joseph Todd

Also interesting in 1843 is that Joseph Todd appears in the tax list which is explained in that he would have turned 21 in 1842, assuming he is Joseph Green Todd b 1821.  However there are no clues as to where he was living at the time to connect him with Joseph and Charity Todd..  He appears on the list through 1848, including being listed as Joseph G Todd in 1848.

Henry Todd presumed son of Joseph and Charity appears in 1845 as having 174 acres on White Oak Creek, and may be the Henry without land that appears in 1844.  Henry appears in 1847 with 100 acres on White Oak. He may be the Henry that appears on Buck Creek in 1848 and 1851, but it is hard to tell.

  1. Sorting out the Henry’s

·         We have one Henry in 1841 and 1843, namely, Henry b 1801 with 140 acres on Buck Creek,

·         There are 2 Henry’s in 1844 – one having the large acreage on Buck Creek, presumably Henry b 1801 and a second Henry with no land.

·         There are two Henry’s in 1845 – one with the large acreage on Buck Creek and a Henry T. with 174 acres on White Oak Creek.  The latter Henry is presumably Henry Harrison Todd b 1824 son of Joseph and Charity.

·         In 1847, there are 2 or maybe 3 Henry’s – one with 204 acres on Buck Creek, one with 100 acres on White Oak and a third with 100 acres on Clifty Creek.  It is not clear whether the Clifty Creek Henry is a third Henry or just the second Henry with a second land holding.

·         In 1848, we appear to have three Henry’s – two with acreage on Buck Creek and one without land.  We presume the third Henry to be the Henry who appears next to Mary Todd in the 1850 census and presumably the son of William and Mary who moved to Pulaski with Mary in 1848.

.

  1. Surprises

There is a John H Todd who along with a Henry Todd and Cartwright Todd appear in 1847 – each with 100 acres on Clifty Creek.   This John H does not appear again, though there is a Harvey Todd in 1851 with 150 acres on Buck Creek.

Similarly surprising is that the James Todd b 1824 who appears in the 1850 census living with Henry Todd does not appear in the tax lists.  I think the James in the census was a typo/clerical error for Jane.

  1. Next steps

Next steps would be to complete the tax lists for Pulaski and Rockcastle County.

Attached are the Rockcastle Co Tax Lists.

For our purposes, what they show is that:

William Todd b 1792 md 1818 Mary Taylor

1.  William Todd (presumably husband of Mary Taylor) appeared as taxed for 150 acres on Brush Creek in 1840, 1841, and 1842.

2.  Mary Todd appeared in 1846 with 100 acres and a designation of Pulaski.  I don’t know if there is a Pulaski Creek or not or whether this means she was moving or had moved to Pulaski County..

3.  Henry Todd (born 1820 assumed son of William) appears as a taxable man 1841,1842 and 1845.

Interpretation:

1.  So I would say that William died between 1842 and 1845, that Mary was taxed in 1846 and then went to Pulaski Co where she appears on the tax lists in 1848.

2.  that Henry Todd son of William was taxed up until 1845 and then went to Pulaski Co where he appears on the tax lists in 1847 on Clifty Creek along with Cartwright and John H Todd.

3.  that Cartwright Todd doesn’t appear on the tax lists because he wasn’t born until 1824/25 and wouldn’t have appeared on the tax lists until 1846/1847 and so he appears for the first time after he came to Pulaski Co in 1847.  However, the marriage record for Cartwright’s sister Mary in 1849 says their parents were dead, implying that their parents were not William and Mary his wife (since Mary was still alive) but rather Joseph and Charity Todd who were born dead by 1849.

Thomas Todd b 1799 md 1828 Mary Van Hook

4.  Thomas Todd (presumably husband of Mary Van Hook) was taxed on most years between 1840 and 1850, in 1840 on Copper Cr and the other years on Dicks/Dix River.

5.  Thomas’ son Benjamin F. Todd b 1823 appears as a taxable man between 1845 (when he was 22 yrs old) and 1850

So this shows Thomas being in Rockcastle Co for the whole decade and his son Benjamin coming of age.

  1. There is a Margaret Todd who appears only in 1847.
  2. There is a Harvey Todd who appears only in 1840 and 1841.

Interpretation:

I don’t know who Margaret Todd was.

Harvey Todd is a mystery who appears in Rockcastle in 1840 and 1841, in Pulaski in 1850, on a land grant on Brush Creek, Pulaski Co in 1845.  It would be good to get the land grant to see if this is really a misreading of Henry.

So though we didn’t find the proof that Cartwright was the son of William, we at least have got an approximation for the death of William and evidence that the Todds who show up in Pulaski in 1847, 1848 were from Rockcastle.

It is wonderful to at last have some evidence for the death of William that ties his branch together.

Grants                                                                              Tax List

Andrew Todd acquires 90 acres by grant of 1820 on Buck Creek      1816 Anderson Todd has 100 acres on Buck Creek without attiribution of who

entered/warranted the land, then no land in 1819 and 1820, then 90 acres in 1821

on Buck Creek.

1825  Anderson has only 50 acres, but Henry has somehow acquired 40 acres.

1825 Anderson Todd acquires 50 more acres on Buck Creek Sells   1826-1827 Anderson has two 50 acre parcels and Henry has 40 acres.

1828 Anderson reduces by 20 acres and Henry increases by 20 acres.

1829  Anderson has 123 acres on Pitmans, but nothing on Buck. Henry has increased

To a parcel of 90 and a parcel of 50. This appears to correspond to the sale by Anderson to Henry of two parcels – 90 and 50 acres recorded in 1831.

It sure looks to me that the 90 acre and 50 acre parcels Anderson sold to Henry in 1831 was the land that Anderson Todd acquired in 1820 (90 acres) and Anderson acquired in 1825 (50 acres).

In order to prove this, we would need to write to the Kentucky Land Office and request copies of these grants, make an abstract of the metes and bounds of those parcels and compare with the metes and bounds of the 1831 deed that Anderson sold to Henry.

Thanks; I'm really hunting for data on the McKenzie/McKinseys of Pulaski County that intermarried with Pouncys line. Sometime if any thing still survives; the married in lines have it. We certainly have NOthing in mine. One death certificate mentions Winny McKinsy as Cynthias mother. But will ck and see if any Mcs in the cos that the Andersons were in before coming to Ky.

The Carlock family also come in for  a strong interconnection with
Starnes,Goldman and Baker families, for in 1811,  Conrad Carlock leaves his
property to "his sister's two sons, Adam and Samuel  Starnes", and there is
little doubt that Conrad Goldman and Conrad Carlock were  named for the same common ancestor. (Courtesy of Gordon Aronhime for  genealogical data.)
The will of Frederick  Starnes was proven in Washington Co., VA on
May 18,1779.  Witness to the  will were Francis Byrd and Jessee Bounds, both
of whom lived in present day  Scott County.  Appraisers of the estate were
Elisha Dungins.  Robert  Reaugh (Ray?) Conrad Henninger and Jessee Bounds,   with the widow,Mary Starnes  as Executrix.  Children mentioned in the will are Jacob and David  Starnes.

[1] We assume the family came from Ireland because one member of the Pulaski Co Todds, Anderson Todd, in 1880 said his parents were born in Ireland, and because the Pulaski Co Todd DNA is a near match to the family we assume is descended from John Todd of Washington Co VA.  James Todd bought land in Washington Co in 1792.

[2] There was a Jane Todd that appears in the 1810 census for Pulaski County who does not appear later.  She had 7 males enumerated with her:  Jane Todd aged 26-45 (born 1765-1784) appeared in the census record with 2 boys aged 0 to 10 (b 1800-1810), 1 boy age 10-16 (born 1794-1800), 3 boys/young men aged 16-26 born 1784-1794, and 1 man age 26-45 (born 1765-1784).  But we haven’t been able to discover her relationship to William, Anderson, Thomas and Henry.

2M 1800-1810:  Thomas b 1799, Henry b 1801

1M 1794-1800    Anderson b 1797

3M 1784-1794    William b 1792    2 others

1M 1765-1784    unknown

I considered whether Jane could have been the widow of James Todd d 1801 and that she came to KY to settle her kin and then returned to VA.   However, this doesn’t quite fit since Jane had sons Thomas b 1796 and Robert b 1799 and daughter Mary b 1801.

Elizabeth appears in the 1811 and 1812 tax lists for Pulaski County on Buck Creek on land entered by John Yates, but purchased by Conrad Starnes in 1818.

[3] Robert was on the 1840 census for Whitely Co and appears on the tax lists for Pulaski County 1843-1847.  The census data of 1840 corresponds fairly well with a Robert Todd in Morgan County Indiana who sold his land there in 1836.

[4] Joseph appears on the Pulaski County tax list in 1827, but his widow Charity appears in 1828. Hence we assume his death in 1827.  DNA genetic results show he was not related to the Pulaski County Todds, but rather to the Todds of Russell Co VA.  Joseph appears in the Russell County tax lists 1801-1810.  He may have been in Adair County KY in 1820.

[5] P 137: Robert Buchanan; James Todd.  At a court held… the 18th day of April 1798.  The inventory & app of the estate of Patrick Todd dec’d was returned to court and ordered to be recorded.

[6] John Todd appeared in the tax lists in the 1790s along with John Todd.   A John Todd Jr appeared in the lists in 1798, a Josiah Todd in 1800, a Thomas Todd in 1801-1804.  We suspect these were all his children and that they appeared at age 16 when they became taxable.  Only John Jr. was still in the tax list with John Sr and the widow of James Todd in 1810.   The 1810 census lists John over 45, two males one the right age to be John Jr b 1782 and one born 1796-1800, presumably Robert Todd.  There is a John Todd b 1780s who had a son born 1811 in Indiana who settled in Greene Co IN and whose DNA matches Robert of Indiana and Pulaski County.

[7] The 1876 death record says the decedent was Andrew Todd age 75, but there is no Andrew Todd in the Pulaski Co records, but there is Henry Todd aged 75 that died in early 1876.  So we presume that the death record entry was for Henry but erroneously entered as Andrew.

The Family Bible is not a normal bible in that it doesn’t record the exact dates of birth, marriage and death as they occurred over several generations.  Instead, it appears that it was a Matthew Henry bible commentary printed in 1890.  Such a commentary would likely have been in the possession of Reuben Todd since Reuben was a minister.   Also, the family tree was not a handentered set of names and dates, but rather a printing press printed family tree inserted into the bible.  Hence it must have been created after 1932, the latest date in the bible.  The only exact dates are those of Reuben Todd in 1852 and his children.   It has a few minor errors and omissions which make it unclear how much is accurate and how much is inaccurate memories.   For example, it is off a year in the birth year of one of Reuben’s siblings and the sibling who died young is not mentioned.  Also, it says Anderson’s father William Todd b 1770 died in Kentucky in 1854, but there is no such William in the 1850 census and no such William in the Kentucky death records for that time.

[8]There is a Mary Todd who died in Montgomery Co before December 1791 for which James Reburn was administrator and for whom an inventory was made in 1792 by Joseph Reburn.   Perhaps Mary was the widow of William; however, there is no indication of other Todds in the estate records so we can not tell if she was the widow of William Todd or not.  There is not enough information in the public records of Montgomery County to sort this family out, but if William did indeed die before 1792, then he was not the father of the Pulaski County Todds.

The Adminstrator for the estate for Mary Todd deceased in 6 December 1791 was James Reburn.  The inventory was made in 1792 by Joseph Reburn.   We attempted to determine if William Todd lived anywhere near the John Taylor 1764-1845 who came from Montgomery Co to Pulaski Co 1800-1805 and was the father of Mary Taylor who married William Todd in 1818 in Pulaski Co, KY.  However, this John Taylor lived in Botetourt Co, Virginia and William Todd of Montgomery lived somewhere in the vicinity of what became the Wythe Co/Grayson Co/Smyth Co border in the area where the South Fork of the Holston, Cripple Creek and Elk Creek came closest together.   Hence, this appears to be many miles from where John Taylor lived.

[9] The DNA shows that Anderson Todd b 1797 and Thomas Todd b 1798/99 were exact 25 marker matches and that Robert Todd b 1790/1796 and John Todd b 1782 were exact 25 marker matches, but that Anderson and Thomas had the same one marker difference from Robert and John.  This means that Anderson and Thomas were likely brothers, and that John and Robert were likely brothers, but that the first two were not brothers to the second two.  They could be close cousins though.

[10] Elizabeth is assumed to be the grandmother because we assume the boys were brothers, because Elizabeth was 51 years old when Henry was born (based on her tombstone 1750-1847 and because the family bible lists her as the grandmother.

[11] The death record for Andrew Todd in February 1876 is probably really a record of the death of Henry Todd.  Henry Todd had an  estate settlement in March 1876, but is not listed in the death records as Henry.  There is no Andrew Todd of the right age in the census of other records to be an Andrew Todd 1801-1876.

[12] The estate settlement for James Todd in 1801 and in subsequent court actions lists the children as Thomas, Robert and Mary, minor children of James Todd.

[13] Washington County Deed Book 12 page 271  Dated 2 Nov 1835 Recorded 28 Dec. 1835  From Todd, Thomas and Elizabeth of Bartholomew Co. IN  To Surber, John of WCV, 53 acres south sd MFHR adj Samuel Kelley, Alexander Robeson and others

[14] This assertion is based on Robert Todd re-apperaring in the Washington Co tax lists 1833-1838 combined with a Robert Todd’s 1850 census in DeKalb Co AL indicating his birth in VA in 1793 and an 1860 census indicating a birth of 1799 along with the 1850 census indicating, a daughter and son born in TN in 1829 and 1832, followed by a son born in VA in 1834, followed by a daughter  born in AL in 1839.    The last known male descendant of this family was a Garnet Todd b 1912-1998 son of Elmer Todd b 1884 son of  Leonidas Lowry Todd b 1854 son of Thomas b 1835 VA. son of Robert L. Todd b 1799 VA.  Thomas H Todd b 1858 (son of James A. b 1832) disappeared after his appearance in Henry Co in 1880.

[15] We have not been able to find any male descendants of John H. P Todd, but getting a DNA sample from this line would prove our theories about the Washington Co Todds being the Todds of Indiana and of Pulaski County.  His son Jackson (possibly Andrew Jackson Todd) may have been taken in by another family after the death of his father by “bushwackers” during the Civil War.

[16] William’s death is inferred from his disappearance from the tax lists and the appearance of his widow on the tax lists of Pulaski County.

[17] The tax lists for Pulaski County show the arrival of the Mary, Cartwright, Henry, and John H in 1847/1848.  The Rockcastle tax lists show William’s disappearance in 1843 from the tax lists and Mary’s appearance in 1846 and Mary’s appearance in Pulaski Co in 1848.

[18] Cartwright Todd was said to have appeared on the marriage record of Mary Todd to Johnson Hamm in 1849 along with Henry Harrison Todd and they were reported to have been identified as brothers of the bride and testifying that their parents were dead.  However, a printed book of marriage records does not list Henry Harrison Todd.   Also, one researcher indicated she thought she had seen Henry Harrison’s  name on that marriage record.  We have not been able to find the original record of this marriage, but if the marriage record  says that Cartwright and Mary’s parents were both dead, then Cartwright Todd must be son of Joseph and Charity Todd.  If it is only the father who is dead, then Cartwright could be son of William Todd b 1792.

[19] In the Rockcastle tax lists in the 1840s, there is a Harvey Todd in 1840 and 1841, in the Pulaski County tax lists, there is a John H in 1847 on Clifty Creek where Henry Todd (son of Wm and Mary) was also listed and a Harvey in 1851.  Also a land grant was issued to Harvy Todd in Pulaski in 1845.

[20] On the Pulaski County marriage bond of Mary Todd and Johnson Hamm on October 23, 1849, “Cartwright T. Todd made oath that the father of Mary Todd is dead..his mother and mother of said Mary Todd has no objection to the marriage of Mary Todd with Johnson Hamm and she authorizes the issuance of the license.”  This shows that a previous report that Henry Harrison Todd was listed on this bond as a brother to Cartwright and Mary was in error.   Henry Harrison Todd was the son of Joseph and Charity Todd; hence, some family historians have reported Cartwright and Mary as children of Joseph and Charity as well.   The evidence against Joseph and Charity being the parents of Cartwright is: (1) the 1830 and 1840 census list only 2 sons Henry Harrison Todd b 1824/25 is proven by death certificate to be one of those sons; DNA proves that Joseph Green Todd b 1821 was the other son.  Similarly, the 1840 census for Charity does not show a young daughter living at home. (2) Charity Todd does not appear in the census records after 1840, suggesting she may have died.  The evidence supporting Cartwright and Mary being sons of William and Mary (Taylor) Todd are: (1) When Cartwright first appeared in the tax lists in Pulaski Co in 1847, he was  identified as living on Clifty Creek along with Henry Todd (who was a son of William Todd) and John H who might be a son of William Todd, (2) Mary (Taylor) Todd widow of William Todd was on the Rockcastle tax list in 1846 and the Pulaski County tax list in 1848 having migrated with her family back to Pulaski  County after the death of her husband William after 1842, (3) Cartwright’s marriage is not recorded in Pulaski County, suggesting the possibility of a Rockcastle Co marriage, (4) Cartwright Todd named one of his sons, William Anderson Todd born 1856, the same name as one of the sons of William and Mary Taylor Todd.  5) In the 1880 census of Lincoln Co., KY, his sister, Mary Polly Pop Todd Hamm lived next door to her uncle James W. Taylor 6) In the 1850 census, Cartwright lived near to Travis Taylor and James W. Taylor, brothers of Mary Taylor Todd, 7) Cartwright purchased land in Pulaski County from Isaac Taylor, brother of Mary Taylor Todd.

[21] We deduce the relationship of Robert Todd to the John Todd Sr of Washington County VA in a convoluted way.   The family tradition of Anderson Todd of Pulaski County seems to reflect some sort of a connection to Washington County.   So we assume the possibility of a Washington County connection for Robert who was thought by later generations to be close kin to Anderson Todd.   The DNA for Robert however is one mutation different from Anderson Todd b 1797 and his assumed brother Thomas b 1798/99, suggesting that Robert was a cousin, not a brother.   And Robert’s DNA matches that of a John Todd b 1780-1790 who was in Indiana by 1811.   The ages of Robert and John match the children’s age of John Todd Sr of Washington County Virginia who left the Virginia just after 1810.  This all fits with Robert and John Todd being the sons of this John Todd.

[22] There was a Jane Todd that appears in the 1810 census for Pulaski County who does not appear later.

[23] The Family Bible is not a normal bible in that it doesn’t record the exact dates of birth, marriage and death as they occurred over several generations.  Instead, it is a fairly recent bible (printed in 1890).  The only exact dates are those of Reuben Todd in 1852 and his children.   The family tree was compiled after 1890 and possibly after 1920.

[24] John Jr appears for the first time in 1798 and continues through 1810; Josiah appears only in 1800; Thomas appears 1801-1804.  Joseph appears in Russell County 1801-1810 – he may be part of the Washington Co family or an unrelated family.

[25] On the Pulaski County marriage bond of Mary Todd and Johnson Hamm on October 23, 1849, “Cartwright T.
