TF 61: Jacob Morningstar Todd Family Pennsylvania, Canada,
New York and Iowa
This family had its
origins in County Armagh, Ireland based on inference from its DNA pattern
matching the Co Armagh Todds.
The progenitor of this family
appears to have been a James Todd who emigrated from Ireland to Niagara, Canada,
married Judith Morningstar there prior to 1808, then
migrated across the international boundary to Erie County by 1822 We find a J. Todd in Erie, Eric County, New
York in 1830 born 1790-1800 with a son b 1815-1820, a son born 1810-1815, a
wife born 1780-1790, a daughter born 1810-1815 and a daughter born 1815-1820. By 1840, we find them in Clarence, Erie
County. In the census of that year, we
find Jacob Todd born 1800-1810 living near Judith Todd born 1780-1790 presumably
the mother of Jacob and near Erasmus D Todd b 1810-1820, presumably a brother of
Jacob. Jacob had sons born in New York, one born 1830-35 (John A. Todd b 1832) and
one born 1835-1840 (Aaron J. Todd b 1837),
In 1850 in Erie County,
we find the family listed as Jacob M. Sodd, a misspelling
of Todd:

In 1850, we also find
Judith Todd born in PA in 1783 living with her daughter in law Cordelia J. Choat b 1822 NY. An
1865 state census identifies Judith as mother-in-law to Cordelia. A history of the Choat
Family (The Choats in America, by John Choat) listed Cornelia J. Todd as daughter of James and
Judith (Morningstar) Todd. Cornelia was
listed as being born July 29, 1822 in Erie County and married William Dexter Choat in 1849. She died in 1867 in Fremont, Michigan
shortly after migrating there from PA.
A findagrave
record indicates that Judith Morningstar Todd b 1783 was the daughter of a
Jacob Morningstar born in 1733 in Germany who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1749
and fled to Canada in 1792 and died in Niagara Municipality in 1824. (It is not clear what exactly he was “fleeing”
from - since the American Revolution was long past.) Judith’s birth in PA and arrival in Canada when
she was 9 years old would suggest that the James Todd
she married was an immigrant to Canada.
They married sometime prior to 1808.
Also in 1850, we have an
assumed brother to Jacob, namely, Erastus or Erasmus who appears in the 1860
census in Erie County as:

Jacob migrated to Linn
County Iowa in 1856; Erastus migrated to Leroy, Calhoun County Michigan between
1865 and 1870. Judith died in 1866 and
is buried in Clarence, Erie Co, NY. Cornelia
J. Todd moved to Michigan after her mother’s death and died in 1867 at a young
age in Mayville, Tuscola County, Michigan.
