Notes on the Tithes Table (see elsewhere for Table of extracts of McM entries):

  1. These records were provided by two sources: (a) the Ulster Historical Society in 1978 who provided listings of McMurtery of various spellings in the card file index with extracts of those index entries and (b) a report by Dennis Taylor of the Ulster Historical Society in 1971.  Dennis reported entries from the Tithes in Ballywater, Ballygallagh and Bruslee in 1835 that differed from those in the townlands of Ballywalter and Bruslee in 1826.  The UHS sent a subsequent letter with additional entries they had uncovered using a more complete search.
  2. It is not clear whether there are additional tithes to be researched or not.   It would appear that there should be entries for Co Carlow, though my listing of McM variants in various counties did not show any entries for Co Carlow.  This should be rechecked to be sure.
  3. The tithes for Artrea, Ballymenagh should be rechecked to see if this could be a misreading of Ballynenagh, as there is no Ballymenagh in Artrea Parish.
  4. We have a letter that indicated that Samuel McMurtry in Co Carlow reported his father dying in 1838.  This should be in the will indexes or estate indexes.   Samuel reported that he placed a good tombstone over his father.
  5. Estate Records:  The estate records for Island Magee provide detailed information about the McM from 1819 to 1844.  Are there other Estate Records to be checked?
  6. The tithe index I looked at in 1971 indicated there was  cMurtry in 1827 in Tullyrusk, Lisburn, but it couldn’t be found by the UHS.
  7. The McM of Kilroot appeared to have moved elsewhere after 1810.  Perhaps they were the ancestors of the McM in one of the nearby parishes.
  8. Not extracted in Co Down were:  McMurty in Drumbeg, Lisburn, McMorter in Dromore, Banbridge/Lisburn, an        d a Murtray in Down, Dumpatrick

We note:

1.   a possible continuity of McM in Kilroot 1699 til 1809,

2,   a connection between Alexander McM of Clontifinnan d 1838 and the Thomas McM who lived there in 1860 (though no known fate of Thomas after 1860)

3.  a possible connection between the Thomas McM of Aghadowey in 1765 and the McM who lived there in the 1820s and later.
