Thomas (or James) McMurter married Sarah Weese a granddaughter of a United Empire Loyalist John Weese and dau of Francis Weese. Their son Thomas McMurter 1823-1882 was progenitor of the McMurter family of Ameliasburgh, Prince Edward County, Ontario.

Thomas McMurter purchased land in 1853 from the Margaret the widow of Francis Weese and purchased land in 1869 from Elkanah Babbitt. These two parcels were bequeathed to his sons in his 1882 will. He appears to have not inherited land from his father.

The 1949 letter of Thomas Mikel, son of Philona McMurter, suggests that Thomas McMurter 1823-1882 had half-brothers and sister, implying a previous marriage of his father and implying an earlier birth date than 1800. This makes the possibility of a Thomas McMurter, the father of Thomas McMurter 1823-1882, being a son of Thomas McMurtry of Somerset Co New Jersey, more plausible. This Thomas McMurtry served in the Revolutionary War and the absconded to New York in 1781 because of debt. The County Sheriff was directed to go to Clarkstown in New York to retrieve Thomas McMurtry, but no trace of Thomas was found thereafter.

The male DNA of a McMurter descendant has the unique DNA markers of the McMurtrys/McMurtrie of Somerset Co NJ and Sussex Co New Jersey. Since no other McMurtry/McMurtrie family has this DNA pattern, the DNA of the McMurters suggest that they descend from the Somerset County New Jersey McMurtrys or possbily the Sussex Co NJ McMurtries.

There was a James Stinson McMurtrie of the Robert McMurtrie family of Sussex Co NJ who was in Toronto in 1834 and died in Youngstown NY in 1837. But this doesn't appear to be the likely father of Thomas McMurter of Prince Edward County.

Special thanks to Shirley McMurter for providing important documents and Harry McMurter for providing a DNA sample.
