This Joseph McMurtry is the assumed brother of Thomas and Robert McMurtry who tradition says settled in New Jersey, America in the early 1700s. Joseph
McMURTRIE birthplace is unknown, but Northern Ireland is the most likley location though Scotland is a possibility. Sources that cite Dalmellington,
Ayrshire, Scotland are based on guesses made in the 1890s by a family historian after reading correspondence from McMurtries in Pennsylvania who had
encounted McMurtries from Dalmellington. DNA evidence shows there is no common ancestor of the Dalmellington McMurtries with the New Jersey family.
Joseph was born probably between 1688-1708, based on assumed birthdates of his children.

(Joseph McMurtrie's wife's name and date of marriage are unknown; and sources that cite marriage of Ann Boone to Joseph McMurtrie in 1723 in Philadelphia have not been documented and are presumed to be a mistake.)
Joseph first appears in 1735-1737 on the credit rolls of a store (Janeway's Store) in Somerset County New Jersey (Bound Brook near present day New
Brunswick). In 1742, Thomas McMurtrie, Joseph's assumed brother, was living in what became Bernardsville, Somerset County. We presume that the whole
family was living in Somerset Co at this time and that Joseph and his brother Robert then went west to Sussex County. In 1750, the three brothers - Joseph,
Thomas and Robert along with two others thought to be brothers-in-law purchased a large tract on the Delaware River in Sussex County. Joseph may have
come to Sussex County in the 1730s as reported in county histories, but this is not documented and seems a few years early.
