The Todds of Northern Ireland

Inspired by receiving a copy of the 1813 Ballyeaston Presbyterian Church census (from a Todd descendant in Co Antrim) which lists each individual of each member family along with their ages and the professions of the adults, we discovered that new online resources make it possible to research the Irish Todds in a way never possible before.

We have discovered that two families from the area around Ballyclare and Ballyeaston have a DNA pattern that matches the DNA pattern of the Todds of the Mary Todd Lincoln family. Tracing down representatives of the various areas within Ireland and getting DNA samples from families from each area might provide geographic specific DNA patterns that could be used to tell Todds that left Ireland where their Irish ancestors lived.

We also discovered that two families that came from a certain area of central Co Down have matching DNA to the families that came to Somerset County New Jersey in the 1740s and to South Carolina some decades later.

It will now be possible to build on these insights and determine the DNA of families in specific areas of Ireland.

One useful product of our research is a set of maps of Armagh, Antrim and Down showing where the Todds lived in the 1830s based on the Tithe Applotment Books of that era and in the 1860s based on the Griffiths Valuation of that era. I see many errors and omissions in these products, but I will leave it up to a future researcher to complete this research in a more thorough way than I was able to do.
